Why do people choose fast food over preparing meals at home? I think it’s because many people are short on time. It’s certainly understandable, but with the right foods on hand, feeding your family healthier meals becomes less of a chore.

Meal Prep Tips for Busy FamiliesAccording to a report from the University of Washington, those who cook more at home have a diet that’s lower in calories, sugar, and fat. It’s also more economical than dining out.

Here are my favourite ways to move toward more homemade meals, even for busy families on the go:

Create a routineIt doesn’t have to be “Taco Tuesday” and “Fast Food Fridays” every week, but sometimes guidelines can help cut down on decision paralysis. Designate a day or two for how you’ll eat, not necessarily what you’ll eat – like Meatless Mondays or having breakfast for dinner once a week.

Compile a recipe stashUse a system that works for you, whether it’s ripping recipes from a magazine and putting them in a binder, or bookmarking them on your computer or smartphone, so you can retrieve them easily.

Make a list, then shop once a weekPick a shopping day. Get input on your list from the family. Check to see if you’re low on your staples in the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry so that you don’t waste time chasing them down during the rest of the week, and so that you can throw together a quick soup, curry or pasta dish at a moment’s notice. When you get to the store, take a few minutes to read food labels to help you choose healthy foods that fit your family’s tastes and budget.

Assign rolesMaybe your spouse is great with a knife – he or she would be perfect on chopping duty. Little kids can mix and help measure. And some folks are best suited for clean-up duty. Give everyone a part they can do with little or no complaints.

Think fast and easyHow many times did you buy a whole pumpkin with the best of intentions, only to watch it rot slowly over time in the back of the bottom fridge drawer? Reach for shortcuts such as frozen veggies, pre-washed greens and pre-cooked or pre-seasoned meat to help cut down on cooking and prep time.

Prep once, cook twiceIf you know you’re going to use chopped onions, garlic and vegetables in more than one meal during the week, cut up everything at one time and store what you’re not using immediately in the fridge so you’ll have it on hand.

Make extra rice or quinoa and store whatever’s left for a future meal and freeze it. And cook extra protein for two meals – the extra fish you grill tonight can be used for tomorrow’s fish tacos.

Master some one-dish wondersCultivate meals that balance your proteins, vegetables, and starches all in one dish. Consider chilli, soups, pasta dishes, stir-frys and casseroles.

Adjusting such a critical part of your life might not happen overnight, especially if it’s tough to get other family members on board, but if you start small and easy, you’ll build a foundation for your family that will only get better over time.

Don’t underestimate the power of walking. Adding some extra walking minutes to your day can have a positive impact on your health and fitness goals, and your step count.

Want a fun, effective and sociable activity that will help you add exercise to your daily routine? Aim to complete 10,000 steps each day. Read on to find out how you can add more steps to your day.

Why walking can help you feel goodMany people see walking as an activity that’s too low in intensity to get them any noticeable fitness results. The truth is that the effects of adding extra walking to your day goes far beyond the physical, because walking can make you feel good, too. If you’re someone who dismisses the idea of walking as exercise, then think again. While walking isn’t a high intensity exercise, it has marvellous benefits that could help add extra pep to your stride.

How 10,000 steps can take you from inactive to activePutting one foot in front of the other as you walk is a type of activity that is very achievable for many people. Walking is a great first step that inactive people can take to get them onto what I call the fitness ladder. Once you get up and moving with a simple activity such as walking, your body will naturally release feel good brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, giving you an emotional boost that may help to get you even more active.

How to increase your step count and add more walking to your day

100-1,000 STEPS Change simple habits such as parking further from the store, getting off the bus one stop sooner, taking the stairs, avoiding escalators and moving walkways or a brisk

5-minute coffee-break walk to help you to accumulate this number of steps.

1,000-5,000 STEPS To reach this number of steps you will need to start adding in walking on the spot while you are on the phone and a 20 minute

coffee-break walk. Make a conscious effort to get up from your desk a few times a day and walk for 5 minutes and get active around your home.

5,000-10,000 STEPS Achieving 10,000 steps per day takes commitment. Aim to use stairs as exercise by taking them 5-6 times, walking 5km, taking a 40-minute dog walk, and taking

two 20-minute coffee-break walks.

This is a significant number of steps because anything less than 5,000 means you’re quite inactive (according to ASCM guidelines, less than 5,000 steps daily is sedentary). Reaching 10,000 steps every day will help you feel like you’re really exercising.

The best way to track your 10,000 steps per dayInvest in a simple pedometer or phone app to help you to keep track. There are lots of fancy gadgets but I suggest finding something that you can clip to clothing, wear or keep in a pocket so that every step counts.

Lots of wearable gadgets have indicators that monitor your daily walking steps. In fact, many of the mobile apps and bracelets even congratulate you when you have reached your goal for the day.

A strong immune system relies on a healthy diet for support. Here are some nutrition tips to help you keep your immune system in tip-top shape. When you stop to think about how hard your immune system works for you, it’s nothing short of amazing. In essence, your immune system is your own personal army of ‘soldiers.’ They protect your body by identifying anything foreign, from a virus to a bacteria to a parasite, and then seeking it out and destroying it.

And your body depends on the proper nutrients and a healthy lifestyle to keep your defences up.

Good Nutrition and Your Immune SystemYour immune system has ‘special forces’ in the form of white blood cells. These cells produce specialised proteins called antibodies that seek out and destroy invading viruses and bacteria. Since antibodies are proteins, you need adequate protein in the diet to ensure you’ll be able to manufacture the antibodies your body needs. Healthy protein foods, like fish, poultry, lean meats, soy foods and low-fat dairy products, provide the building blocks that your body needs to make these specialised proteins.

Fruits and vegetables are key players in immune system health, because they’re great sources of vitamins A and C, as well as phytonutrients. Vitamin C encourages your body to produce antibodies, and vitamin A supports the health of your skin and tissues of your digestive tract and respiratory system. All of these act as first lines of defence against foreign invaders. Many of the phytonutrients found in fruits and veggies act as antioxidants, which can help to reduce oxidative stress on the body that may weaken your body’s ability to fight of illness.

Keeping your digestive system healthy is also important in supporting immune function. Your digestive tract is home to trillions of bacteria that have numerous functions in promoting health. Some strains of bacteria help you digest the fibre in your foods, others consume intestinal gas, while others produce vitamins like vitamin K and vitamin B12.

When your system is populated with these “good” bacteria, they also serve to crowd out the potentially harmful bacteria that might enter your digestive tract. Some of the best sources of these friendly bacteria are cultured dairy products, like yogurt and kefir. As you know, whenever you’re trying something new, make sure to check with your doctor or other professional about the amount to take that’s right for you.

Some people suffer medical conditions that affect the operation of their immune systems. Diet alone won’t improve the function of a compromised immune system. But for healthy people, eating well can help keep your immune system healthy and strong. To help your body in the fight against foreign invaders, your internal ‘army’ needs the best nutrition possible. So call in the troops!

HELP SUPPORT AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE RELIEF

AUSTRALIA IS EXPERIENCING ONE OF THE WORST BUSHFIRE SEASONS IN HISTORY.

It is estimated that over 10 million hectares have been burnt, more than 20 firefighters and civilians have lost their lives, and over 2,000 homes have been lost across NSW, Victoria &

South Australia alone.

In NSW, approximately half a billion animals have been affected by fires, and that number could be as high as one billion nationwide. Almost a third of koalas in NSW may have been

killed in the fires, and a third of their habitat has been destroyed. Ecologists fear some species will be driven to extinction.

MARK HUGHES MONTHDuring Mark Hughes Month in February, Members and staff volunteered their time to help out at Herbalife Nutrition Foundation (HNF) Casa Partners to celebrate and honour our Founder and First Member’s desire to help people around the world improve their nutritional habits. Through HNF, we support charities (our Casa Partners) that provide nutrition education programs for children and youth, including those at risk.

Fun on Four Continues Members continue to participate in arts and crafts activities with children and families at the ‘Fun on Four’ space at Perth Children’s Hospital.

Activities often focus on nutrition, like encouraging children to eat a variety of different coloured fruit and vegetables by ‘eating a rainbow’.

Maintaining Gardens, Grounds and More…

Herbalife Nutrition Members and corporate staff helped clean playgrounds, kitchens and toy sheds as well as rake leaves and mow lawns at The Infants’ Home (TIH). This helps to create a safe, clean and beautiful environment so that TIH staff can focus on providing award-winning early childhood services for young children, including those living with vulnerabilities and special needs.

I found Herbalife Nutrition by responding to a flyer in my letterbox because I was desperate to fit back into my old set of clothes. I had tried so many things before without success.

I introduced the Herbalife Nutrition Ultimate Program into my healthy active lifestyle. I dropped 5 dress sizes and lost 37 kilos and just feel amazing everyday.

I also suffered from bad skin for over a decade. I felt like I tried everything and spent thousands of dollars with no result. It made me very self-conscious and I would try to pack on the make up to hide it. I incorporated the SKIN range with my nutrition regime and my results were so incredible! My complexion and hydration have improved, my skin just feels and looks more youthful! Now I love the skin I’m in!

I love what I do.

I am originally from Mexico. Before getting involved with this business I did not have any experience or background in business at all. I had been backpacking around the world for 6 years and was looking for some extra income to carry on with my travels.

I came across this opportunity through an advert in the local paper and I was invited to attend a Herbalife Opportunity Meeting.

I was so impressed by the stories that I heard that I decided to get started, even though I didn’t know anybody in the country.

I was shown how to get started ‘step by step’. I attended a local training and by following what I had learned I made a pretty decent income in my first 3 months so, I decided to keep going! Since then I have had amazing adventures and a great journey with Herbalife Nutrition. I even met my wife through this business...she was one of my customers! I love what I do and I continue to travel the world - now with my wife Helen.

At Parliament House to attend the ‘Healthy People, Healthy Futures’ CMA breakfast event (left to right): Ric Hobby, Vice President of International Government Affairs, Peter Hurley, General Manager/Director of Herbalife Nutrition Australia and New Zealand and John Hellmann, Vice President of Government Affairs Asia Pacific.

Herbalife Nutrition Shares Its Mission at Parliament House

On February 12th 2020 we reaffirmed our mission and commitment to help make Australians healthier and happier through great nutrition to a select audience of government, industry and regulatory representatives during a ‘healthy breakfast’ event held at Parliament House.Hosted by Complementary Medicines Australia, the ‘Healthy People, Healthy Futures’ breakfast was attended by keynote speaker The Hon. Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, Ministers, Members of Parliament, government officials, as well as a range of representatives from medical, natural therapy, pharmacy and nutrition and research bodies.

The discussion centred on avoidable Australian health epidemics such as obesity, coronary heart disease and diabetes and consequent rising healthcare costs, and focused on ways to work together in building healthier communities. The importance of preventative health, good lifestyle choices and nutrition was highlighted to forestall against the rising cost of healthcare, estimated to increase by $61 billion to $246 billion in 2033, and the sobering statistical fact that 2 in 3 adults are overweight or obese in Australia.

In our keynote presentation, we shared our mission to improve nutritional habits with great-tasting, science backed products through our extensive, purpose-driven network of over 24,000 Members in Australia.

As a testament to Member leadership, we highlighted how Herbalife Nutrition has been recognised by the industry as a leader in Australia, winning awards for Best Marketing Campaign for our ‘Shake Up your Breakfast’ campaign from the Direct Selling Association Australia in 2018, and CMA’s ‘Social Selling’ Award*

for four out of five years (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019). We won both awards for our commitment to nutrition education and bringing health and wellness to Australians.

Peter Hurley, General Manager/Director of Herbalife Nutrition Australia and New Zealand enjoyed meeting The Hon. Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt.
