Oh, by the way…

Time to resume the next five (5) sessions focusing on the Liturgy/Mass. The presentations continue to be progressive. We’ll briefly refresh/re-examine Medieval Times (800-1200), the Middle Ages (1200-1545) then move into Trent to Vatican II (1545-1962). I would encourage those have been attending to refresh and review the reflections on the Roman Era, Medieval Times and the Middle Ages.

30 January, 6 February, 13 February, 20 February, 27 February

Classes run from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Sessions will be held at St. Peter.

Speaking of Liturgy, something interesting is brewing! At some time during the above mentioned classes, we will briefly explore the differences between formal equivalency and dynamic equivalency. Back in 2011, the Roman Missal was mandated. Prior to that, ICEL^ had been pushed aside and Liturgiam Authenticam+ was required. Well, there’s a slow movement to replace that Roman Missal! (I mentioned this back in 2012 in another Parish. This is picking up speed with Pope Francis’ 2017 motu proprio: Magnum Principium! ) Can’t wait. Not sure how quickly this will happen, but it is moving! As far as I, and many others are concerned, this change can’t come soon enough. Sentences 16 lines long! Horrible placed modifiers. The word ‘vir’ is horribly translated in the Creed. Words that make no sense in our vocabulary.

ICEL^ The International Commission on English in the Liturgy is a Commission of Catholic Bishop’s Conferences in countries where English is used in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy according to the Roman Rite. The purpose of the Commission is to prepare translations of each of the Latin liturgical books and any individual texts in accord with the directives of the Holy See.

+Liturgiam authenticam (De usu linguarum popularium in libris liturgiae Romanae edendis) is an instruction of the Holy See, dated 28 March 2001, that included the requirement that, in translations of the liturgical texts from the official Latin originals, or Sacred Scripture from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek "the original text, insofar as possible, must be translated integrally and in the most exact manner, without omissions or additions in terms of their content, and without paraphrases or glosses. Any adaptation to the characteristics or the nature of the various vernacular languages is to be sober and discreet."

Next week-end is our annual collection for the Propagation of the Faith The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is one of four Pontifical Mission Societies.

The others are: The Society of St. Peter Apostle, The Missionary Union of Priests and

Religious and the Holy Childhood Association.

The Pontifical Mission Societies are Roman Catholic mission societies

active throughout the whole world. Almost every country has a national

office for the Pontifical Mission Societies and a national director.

Pauline Marie Jaricot is “the founder of the largest aid agency in

missions in the history of the Catholic Church: the Association of the

Propagation of the Faith.” Pauline was committed to the formation of a

missionary conscientiousness’ in the Christians in order to aid the Church in its task of

preaching the Gospel and establishing it in areas of the world where it had not been before.

She saw the renewal of the Church in France following the Revolution was linked with a

renewed zeal for the missions. Launched in 1818, the Association is officially recognized 3

May 1822 and later became the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, before being

elevated by Pope Pius XI to “Pontifical” in 1922.

Pauline Jaricot was born into a wealthy family in Lyon, France in 1799.

She could have lived a life of privilege but instead committed herself to

raising funds and awareness for the world missions. As a teenager she

appealed to girls who were working in her brother-in-law’s factory to make

a contribution of one penny a week in order to support abandoned

children in China. Soon others joined to help support the missions. In 1822

The Society for the Propagation of the Faith began.

In its first year Pauline also began printing and circulating information about the work

of missionaries. The Annals increased interest in the work of the society.

The Society for the Propagation of the Faith grew to become the universal fundraising

organization for all Catholic missions. Pauline Jaricot’s life was one driven by concern for the

missions and the poor. She died in 1862.

Please use the envelopes in your contribution packets and simply place them in the

regular collection basket. Thank you.
