Oh, by the way,
Thursday, St. Peter will host the quarterly Logansport Clergy Deanery meeting. As you are well aware, St. Peter belongs to the Logansport Deanery. Other parishes in the deanery include St. Joseph, Delphi, St. Francis Solano, Francesville, St. Ann, Kewanna, St. Joan of Arc, Kokomo, St. Patrick, Kokomo, All Saints, Logansport, St. Anne, Monterey, Our Lady of the Lakes, Monticello, St. Charles Borromeo, Peru, St. Joseph, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Reynolds and St. Joseph, Rochester. We begin with mid-morning prayer then address the agenda from the Bishop and then what issues/concerns we need to share with the Bishop. Lunch is served then more business if necessary. (Know we will be finalizing Reconciliation services for the deanery.) When everything is finished, everyone usually heads back to their home parish. So, if you see an additional nine (9) cars and people in black running around, that’s us.
So, what’ a deanery? Glad you asked. Information for your edification:
In the Catholic Church, Can.374 §2 of the Code of Canon Law grants
to bishops the possibility to join together several neighboring parishes into special
groups, such as vicariates forane, or deaneries.
Each deanery is headed by a Dean, ceremoniously known as a vicar forane (V.F.), also
called an archpriest, who is—according to the definition provided in canon 553—
a priest appointed by the bishop after consultation with the priests exercising ministry in
the deanery. Canon 555 defines the duties of a dean as:
promotion and coordination of the common pastoral activity within the deanery;
seeing that the clerics of the deanery lead a life in harmony with their state in life and
perform their duties with diligence;
seeing that religious functions follow Church norms;
seeing that the good appearance of churches and sacred furnishings are maintained;
seeing that parish books are correctly managed;
seeing that the parish rectory is well maintained;
seeing that clerics, following the norms of the diocese and the norms of Canon 272,
attend theological lectures, meetings, or conferences;
making sure that the priests of the deanery have access to spiritual helps and aid in
difficult pastoral circumstances; and
making sure that pastors in his deanery are well cared for when they are sick or dying.
Additionally, the dean must follow the particular norms of the diocese. Canon 555
also particularly mentions that a dean must visit the parishes of the district in accord with
the regulations made by the diocesan bishop.
Personal note: Years ago, I was Dean of the Lafayette Deanery. Being Pastor of a
1,300 family Parish (with no Associate), a K-6 grade school, governance board of a
middle & high school known as Central Catholic…CC), I stayed extreme busy as a
Pastor and Dean! As many of you know, I hate paper work…and there’s a lot of
paper work being a Dean.
The Diocese of Gary is offering a
diocesan workshop to which we have
been invited. Entitled: Made for More:
Visions of the Promised Land.
Advertised as a blend of live music,
art and a presentation that taps into
the deepest desires of the human
heart, the presenters offer a vision of
the Gospel heard through the lens of
St. John Paul’s Theology of the Body.
The presentation will be at Queen of
All Saints Church, 606 W. Woodland,
Michigan City from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30
p.m. For more information, contact Rosanne at [email protected] or
219.769.9292 x 259. Remember they are an hour behind us.) A flyer is posted on
the bulletin boards.
Recently read an article about A.I. Scary to say the least! A.I.
(artificial intelligence) is the theory and development of computer systems
able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as
visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation
between languages. Two (2) world recognized intellectuals, Stephen
Hawking and Elon Musk, have warned of A.I. threats. Most of us Baby
Boomers will have some contact with A.I. However, the Generation X,
Xennials, Millennials, Generation Y, Gen Z and Gen Alpha people will be facing the
exploding moral ethical issues being raised NOW. There are creeping ethical challenges
of A.I. technology already bending our perceptions of the world around us. Stay tuned.
Keep your ears open and by all means, read on this phenomenon. SCARY!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch….fr. K
