The Very Important Litter Cleanup Permit! The Very Important Litter Cleanup Permit!

Why Should I Get a Permit? What is it for?Why Should I Get a Permit? What is it for? The permit gives the group permission to perform a cleanup along the roadway or exit. It allows you to make arrangements with Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) for litter removal. Sending Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) the completed permit ensures your group’s name will appear in the newsletter and receive recognition for a job well done. It’s easy! Call 1-888-432-3233 to be connected to the nearest TIR base and request a permit or you can get a permit from our website, fill it in, and send it to your nearest TIR office for approval.

Remember:Remember: After the cleanup please send us the permit or the corresponding information.

If you do weekly, or regular cleanups, please send us the pertinent information twice yearly.

The permit should to be requested from TIR at least two weeks prior to your cleanup.

t is necessary for the permit be on-site the day of the cleanup.

Volunteers …

They don’t necessarily have the time;

They just have the heart.

Thank you!

The Spring 2017 cleanup was very successful with

78 groups taking part. A total of 2,423 bags of gar-

bage and 122 bags of recycling were removed by

our volunteers. There were 391 kilometers of road-

ways and 11 interchanges cleaned. Over 1,257 vol-

unteers participated with a grand total of 3,472

volunteer hours. An estimated 40 tonnes of litter

were removed from the roadways and interchang-

es. We always say that we have the best volunteers

and yet again you have proved us right! Nova Sco-

tia is that much better because of all that you do.

A message From Watch for WildlifeA message From Watch for Wildlife

Watch for Wildlife NS is a new program of the Sierra Club Canada Foundation and was developed to educate drivers about: the impacts of wildlife vehicle collisions, how to prevent collisions, and how to respond/who to call if you see a hit animal on the road or if you happen to hit a wild creature yourself.

As a volunteer of Adopt-A-Highway, you are likely more aware than most of the effects of throwing garbage onto the road, but you may not be aware that wild creatures, es-pecially scavenger species like raccoons and birds, are attracted to and preoccupied by food and litter on the road. Even people who never litter throw apple cores out the window thinking they are biodegradable and not a problem, but food waste especially entices wildlife onto the road where they are at risk of being hit.

I am writing to ask if you can help get the word out about Watch for Wildlife and perhaps add collision prevention awareness to your role as a highway adopter? Our program brochures are intended to be kept in people's glove compartments and include con-tact info for who to call if in a collision. We also have bumper magnets and stickers to help raise awareness. Please get in touch if you would like one, or if you are willing to help distribute them in your area. For more info see our website at www.watchforwildlife.ca and please follow us on Facebook @watchforwildlifens and Twitter @watch4wildlife.

Thank you for keeping our highways clean for everyone, including the wild ones, it matters. - Wanda Baxter, Program Manager, W4W

Help spread the word! We are always looking for more volunteers. The Nova Scotia Adopt-A-Highway Program is a great way to give back to your community by beautifying roadways.

Also, after two cleanups any group can request FREE Adopt-A-Highway signs to be installed along their route. Our road signs are estimated to be worth hundreds of dollars per year in advertising.

A Message from Divert NSA Message from Divert NS

Make Your Food Go Further - Waste Reduction Week 2017 Divert NS is partnering with municipalities province-wide October 16-22 to raise awareness of food waste. Divert NS will run a social media campaign asking Nova Scotians to submit online tips to re-duce food waste or a recipe using leftovers for a chance to win a prize pack. Municipal waste educators will set up in Sobeys and Walmart to provide tips on reducing food waste. #MoreTasteLessWaste Lesson Plans for Teachers In October, Divert NS is launching new lesson plans that connect recycling and waste diversion to the curric-ulum outcomes of elementary students. The lesson plans will be available at divertns.ca to be downloaded by teachers. The 25 lesson plans cover topics of recycling, composting, textiles, and more. Know a teacher? Let them know these great resources are available! 2017 Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence Celebrate Nova Scotia’s environmental champions and see Adam Minter, best-selling author of Junkyard Planet and Bloomberg View columnist, as he shares a message of optimism about recycling, and demon-strates why repair, re-use and refurbishment are the route to Canada’s circular economy. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit: divertmobiusawards.ca.

Be Tick Smart!Be Tick Smart!

Ticks are becoming more of an issue every year it seems, so we want to remind everyone of a few tips to keep yourself “Tick Free” courtesy of www.canada.ca:

Wear light coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants to spot ticks easily.

Tuck your shirt into your pants, and pull your socks over your pant legs. Use bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin on your skin and clothing (always follow the directions on the label). Shower or bathe within two hours of being outdoors to facilitate a prompt tick check and to remove ticks that have not attached yet.
