Staff Update October 2019

Planning, patience, and precision were the key

ingredients to this month’s impressive manoeuvring

of a 6.5 tonne MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

machine up and into the new Level 5 F Block

Imaging Department.

LISMORE BASE HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT — STAGE 3

Staff Update October 2019

Impressive employment stats for project The completion and opening of Lismore Base

Hospital’s new North Tower (F Block) will bring

many clinical improvements for the hospital, and

while most are looking forward to enjoying that

destination, there are many who have been

enjoying the journey.

The construction of North Tower, from May 2018 to

September 2019, has generated more than

305,000 hours of work time, by an average daily

workforce of 115 men and women.

Of the total 745 inducted workers employed

throughout the construction, 61 were apprentices

and 101 were non-apprentices who became

learning workers by participating in training

programs.

While construction is predominantly a male-

dominated industry, there were 19 females on site

working in trade-related roles.

Maddison Carr is an Apprentice Electrician with

STAR Group who first commenced working on the

Stage 3 redevelopment in 2016.

Maddison has just two months of her

apprenticeship to serve before becoming a fully

qualified electrician, and was keen to see out her

time working on North Tower.

“I started my apprenticeship working on Byron Bay

Hospital and I then worked on the first stage of

Lismore Base Hospital back in 2016 (when) I was

the only female worker on site,” Maddison said.

“Over the last couple of years, I’ve been doing a lot

of residential work. It’s been great coming back to

the Lismore Hospital job to finish my apprenticeship

and find all these female workers here now.”

As well as the high number of female workers

involved in the construction of North Tower, the

redevelopment has also provided employment to

17 workers who identify as Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander people. This represents an

Aboriginal participation rate for North Tower of 16.2

percent, way above the project target of 3 percent.

Apprentice electrician Maddison Carr will complete her

apprenticeship on North Tower.

LISMORE BASE HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT — STAGE 3

Staff Update October 2019

When two towers become one . . . The delicate work of cutting through the

walls erected between E Block and F

Block commenced mid-September and is

nearing completion.

In key critical clinical areas, such as E6

Theatres, the cut-through required high

level co-ordination and co-operation

between Lismore Base Hospital Executive

and staff, and the construction team.

The cut-through on Level 6 was completed

without incident or interruption to surgical

time, with the project team giving thanks to

the efforts of all staff involved.

Each level of F Block will be integrated with E Block

at both the A Lift access core, and the patient

transport staff lifts in the centre of the building.

The transition between E Block and F Block will be

seamless once complete, with staff, patients, and

visitors unaware internally when they will be leaving

one tower and entering the other tower.

North Tower is currently going

through the commissioning and

defect inspection period which will

continue until the building is

handed over to the NNSWLHD at

the start of December.

This will then enable the LHD

commissioning to commence,

including staff orientation and

familiarisation sessions, ahead of

the relocation of departments from

the end of January 2020, with

Security being the first department

to move on January 27.

The cut-through on each level provides a ‘look only’ access.

Work is nearing completion on all levels linking E and F Blocks.
