Caveats

● Homework will not suddenly get done 100% of the time.

● A bad lesson, flipped, is still a bad lesson.

● Remember -- students learn best as active creators not passive consumers.

3 Benefits of Flipping

1.Control2.Choice3.Time

Page 13: Lisa Gurthie PD Facilitator Piedmont Middle School, CMS Flipped Instruction.

● Teacher controls quality○ create or curate a “perfect” delivery”- ○ same quality in morning as in afternoon.*

● student controls delivery timing *curating video or flipped lessons is just the

same as curating reading assignments for your class. It is still “real” teaching even if you didn’t invent it!

Benefits of Flipping1- CONTROL

Page 14: Lisa Gurthie PD Facilitator Piedmont Middle School, CMS Flipped Instruction.

Benefits of Flipping2- CHOICE

OLD WAYwhole group Instruction limited to the abilities of the delivering teacher in the given moment.

Only one delivery must suit all learners

FLIPPED WAY:Teacher &/or student chooses the best content for their situation from a large variety of styles, delivery methods, and sources.

singing, rapping, just-the-facts, etc.

Page 15: Lisa Gurthie PD Facilitator Piedmont Middle School, CMS Flipped Instruction.

Benefits of Flipping3- Time Efficiency

OLD WAY:student may miss info and be embarrassed to ask for repeat

Teacher is LIVE- may forget to deliver info or be delayed by class issues.

FLIPPED WAY :student can pause rewind, review. can watch when convenient to them.

teacher can be sure all is covered as desired the first time...

Example of aFlipped Faculty MeetingPiedmont Asthma/Diabetes Training

At home teachers viewed the training and took notes.

In meeting we used ColAR Mix app to animate teacher facts

Benefit of flipping-Instead of spending time viewing together, we can come in and share/discuss while doing an activity (demo of AR)

Gimmicks and activities help attention and memory also associate meeting time with interaction not just receiving.
