REGULAR SEASON – DECEMBEDETROIT 20, ARIZONASUN DEVIL STADIUM The Detroit Lions (3-10) got out of the snow and headed to warmer temperatures in Tempe, Arizona to face the Arizona Cardinals (5-9). The Lions fell to the Cardinals 23-20 in overtime. After sending the Cardinals three-and-out on their opening possession, the Lions received a huge lift from rookie PR Eddie Drummond, who returned a first quarter punt 73 yards for the score, putting the Lions on the board first early in the first quarter. Drummond’s punt return for a touchdown was the first byLion since Desmond Howard returned a punt 95 yards for the score against the New Orleans Saints on September 3, 2000. The Cardinals would answer quickly as Cardinals QB Jake Plummer found FB Joel Makovicka for a one-yard score, tythe game at seven apiece. After both sides traded punts on their next possessions, the Lions got things going as QB Joey Harrington found TE Mikhael Ricks all alone on the out route for the score, putting the Lions up 14-7 to end the first quarter. The Lions defense would shut out the Cardinal offense over three series, as CB Todd Lyght intercepted QB Jake Plummer's pass, returning the pick 31 yards, setting up the Lions next scoring opportunity. The Lions would respond quickly as K JasonHanson connected on a 26-yard field goal, putting the Lions in a commanding 17-7 second quarter lead. With time winding down on the Cardinals in the first half, QB Jake Plummer found WR Nathan Poole for ten yards and the touchdown, putting the Cardinals back in the hunt heading into the locker room 17-14. The Lions would open the second half with more insurance points, as K Jason Hanson nailed his second field goal of the day from 20 yards out, putting the Lions up two field goals early in the third quarter. The Cardinals would not be denied on their next possession, as K Bill Gramatica hit a 29-yard fieldcapping a 10-play 64-yard drive, putting the Cardinals in reach 20-17. As the Lions and Cardinals played solid defense throughout most of the third and fourth quarter, the Cardinals would eventually break the scoreless streak, as K Bill Gramatica yet again connected on a field goal from 41 yards out, putting the game in a deadlock 20-20 tie with just under three minutes to go. With time winding down on both teams, the Lions and Cardinals could not capitalize on their final possessions, sending the Lions to their third overtime contest of the season. After the Cardinals won the coin toss and elected to receive, three plays their possession, LB Chris Claiborne intercepted QB Jake Plummer's pass and returned the interception 38 yards to the Cardinals 11 yard line. However, a personal foul was called on the Lions DE Robert Porcher and Cardinals TE Freddie Jones, nullifying the play and the Lions chances of an overtime victory. Cafi

TTHHEE LLAASSTT TTIIMMEE REGULAR SEASON – DECEMBER 9, 2001 DETROIT 12, TAMPA BAY 15; RAYMOND JAMES STADIUM The Detroit Lions’ regular season record fell to 0-12 after a heartbreaking loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the waning seconds of regulation. QB Mike McMahon, who made his first NFL start against the Bucs, was unable to fulfill a Detroit come-from-behind endeavor as WR Keyshawn Johnson's 13-yard touchdown catch with 45 seconds remaining kept the Bucs’ playoff hopes alive and the Lions winless. After a scoreless first quarter, the Buccaneers got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when FB Mike Alstott galloped through the middle of the field 24 yards for a touchdown. The 11-play, 91-yard drive chewed 6:09 off the clock and gave the Bucs a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, the Lions answered as K Jason Hanson nailed a 39-yard field goal to make the score 7-3. The Bucs drove down to the Lions’ three-yard line and with only five seconds remaining until halftime, Bucs head coach Tony Dungy decided to go for the touchdown rather than attempt the 20-yard field goal. The Lions’ defense, who held the Bucs’ typically dynamic rushing attack to only 81 yards on the day, flushed QB Brad Johnson out of the pocket and forced him into an incomplete pass as time ran out in the first half. The Lions then scored nine unanswered points on three Hanson field goals (30, 50 and 42 yards respectively), and took a five-point lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation. In a drive that began with 4:56 remaining in the game, the Bucs converted two fourth down plays (six and eight yards) en route to Johnson’s touchdown with less than one minute remaining. Johnson’s two-point conversion pass to Alstott was successful, giving the Bucs a 15-12 lead. The Lions fumbled the kickoff and the Bucs recovered to preserve their win. Lions DE James Hall had a stellar day as he sacked Johnson a career-high 3.5 times for 24.5 yards, which is also a team-leading effort in a single game this season. The Detroit Lions roster has gone through some major turnover since the end of last season. Almost 40 percent (21-of-53)

of the Lions' current roster is occupied by players that were not a part of the 2001 roster. Also, of the projected starters on offense and defense, eight (36 percent) are new to the squad.

A top priority for the Lions during the 2002 off-season was to address the secondary, and the first acquisition made in free agency was the signing of Dolphins S Brian Walker. Over the past two seasons, the Dolphins’ pass defense ranked first (2001) and fifth (2000) overall in the NFL, and led the team to back-to-back playoff appearances. Walker was a key cog during that span starting 29 of 32 regular season contests. In addition, the Lions signed S Corey Harris, an 11-year NFL

Page 4: LIONS HOST FORMER DIVISION FOE BUCCANEERS ...prod.static.lions.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/...Jon Gruden, who spent four seasons guiding the Oakland Raiders to a 38-26 overall

veteran. Harris also came from a strong defensive background, playing on a squad in Baltimore that ranked second overall in the NFL in 2001, 2000 and 1999, and catapulted the Ravens to claim Super Bowl XXXV. These transactions were necessary because of injuries to 2001 Lions’ starting safeties Ron Rice and Kurt Schultz. With the loss of CB Bryant Westbrook to free agency and the retirement of 11-year veteran CB Robert Bailey, the team signed 13-year veteran CB Eric Davis. Davis started at cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers during their run towards the Super Bowl XXIX title.

Three key members of the 2001 Lions defensive front seven retired from the NFL after the 2001 season, including LB Stephen Boyd, LB Allen Aldridge and DE Tracy Scroggins. Boyd and Scroggins currently rank third and ninth, respectively, in the team record annals for career tackles. Scroggins also is the team’s fifth-ranked all-time sack leader with 60.5 career sacks. The Lions priority on the offensive side of the ball was to shore up the wide receiver position. The signings of WR Az-

Zahir Hakim and WR Bill Schroeder addressed the team’s need for speed and big-play capabilities. Hakim was a vital component in the high-octane St. Louis offense, which was the league’s number-one ranked offense in each of the past three NFL seasons. Hakim played in two Super Bowls with the Rams, winning Super Bowl XXXIV and leading all receivers with 90-yards receiving in Super Bowl XXXV. Schroeder, a seven-year veteran, joined the Lions after playing with perennial all-pro Packers QB Brett Favre in the West Coast Offense. Schroeder finished the 2001 season with team-highs of nine touchdowns and 918 yards receiving and was second on the team with 53 receptions. On August 20, the Lions signed veteran free agent G Ray Brown from the San Francisco 49ers. Last season in San

Francisco, Brown was voted to his first Pro Bowl. Brown has been a “steal” for the Lions thus far as he has brought veteran leadership and reliability. Brown has started every game for the Lions at right guard in 2002.

BBUUIILLDDIINNGG TTHHRROOUUGGHH TTHHEE DDRRAAFFTT The Detroit Lions have built a strong foundation through the NFL's annual draft the past two seasons. LLIIOONNSS NNOOTTAABBLLEESS OOFFFFEENNSSIIVVEE OOUUTTPPUUTTSS Detroit developed its offensive fire-power throughout the 2001 season and is continuing to progress as new members of the team are learning and adjusting to the West Coast offense. This season, with new weapons at his disposal, Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg has made progress with the young group. The offensive line has played extremely well protecting QB Joey Harrington in passing situations this year. Last year, the

Lions allowed 66 sacks, which was the most in the NFL and the second-most in franchise history. During Harrington’s 11 starts, the offensive line has allowed a total of only seven sacks, which ranks first in the league this season. The offensive line gave up 64 sacks in 1999, 53 in 2000 and 66 last season.

TE Mikahael Ricks’ 13.5 yards per catch average leads all tight ends in the NFL. QB Joey Harrington’s six-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to TE Mikhael Ricks at Arizona (12/8) marked his

12th touchdown pass of the season and Ricks’ third touchdown reception of the year. WR Bill Schroeder’s 37-yard touchdown reception from QB Joey Harrington in the second quarter at Chicago (11/24)

was one-yard shy of Schroeder’s season-long reception. Schroeder’s seven-yard TD reception in the third quarter was his second touchdown of the game and marked his first multi-touchdown game as a Lion and the third of his career.

Page 10: LIONS HOST FORMER DIVISION FOE BUCCANEERS ...prod.static.lions.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/...Jon Gruden, who spent four seasons guiding the Oakland Raiders to a 38-26 overall

WR Scotty Anderson’s 34-yard reception in the third quarter at Chicago (11/24) was a season-long reception for the second-year wide receiver. Anderson’s grab set up the Lions’ first lead of the game, 10-7. Anderson finished the game with five receptions for 70 yards. Both represent career-high marks for the second-year receiver.

WR Germane Crowell’s one-yard TD reception on fourth down in the third quarter at Chicago (11/24) put the Lions ahead for the first time in the game, 10-7. It also was his first TD reception since Oct. 21, 2001 when the Lions played the Tennessee Titans at the Silverdome.

The Lions’ 15-play, 69-yard drive in the third quarter at Chicago (11/24) resulted in the one-yard TD reception by Crowell. It was the most plays recorded (15) in any one single drive by the Lions this season.

QB Joey Harrington’s 64-yard TD pass to WR Az-Zahir Hakim at GB (11/10) was the Lions’ longest offensive play from the line of scrimmage this season. It also was a career-long TD pass for Harrington and the longest reception for Hakim as a Lion. It also was the first time the Lions’ offensive unit has scored on its first play of the game since Oct. 14, 1990, when RB Barry Sanders caught a 47-yard TD pass from Gagliano vs. Kansas City.

Hakim’s 64-yard touchdown reception and RB James Stewart’s 56-yard run vs. GB (11/10) are the two highest single-play offensive outputs by the Lions in 2002.

WR Az-Zahir Hakim recorded seven receptions for 143 yards and one touchdown vs. GB (11/10). His 143 yards represented a career-high for Hakim as a Lion and it was the first time a Lions’ receiver broke the century mark in 2002. It also was the second-most single-game yardage total for the five-year veteran in his career.

The Lions offense attempted a season-high 44 pass attempts at GB (11/10). WR Az-Zahir Hakim’s 23-yard TD reception at Buffalo (10/27) was his second receiving touchdown as a Lion. It also

marked QB Joey Harrington’s sixth TD pass of the year. The offensive line played a complete game vs. the Chicago Bears (10/20) as they paved the way for a season-high 192

yards on 39 carries (4.9 avg.) and two rushing touchdowns. They also perfected the two-minute drill as they drove 77 yards down the field to set up Hanson’s 24-yard game-tying field goal. In overtime, the offensive unit was given an opportunity to shine after winning the coin toss and they did just that. After seven consecutive rushing plays for 26 yards, the offense gave Hanson the opportunity to nail a 48-yard game-winning field goal.

RB Aveion Cason’s 36-yard reception in the second quarter vs. Chicago (10/20) was a career-long reception for the second-year running back. Cason’s 57 total yards receiving was a single-game high.

The Lions scored on their opening possession for the first time in 2002 vs. Minnesota (10/13). QB Joey Harrington’s 41-yard touchdown strike to TE Mikhael Ricks capped off the four-play, 80-yard drive.

The Lions’ 14 points scored in the first quarter at Minnesota (10/13) marked the first time the Lions have scored as many points in the first quarter since they played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 22, 1998. The Lions 21 points scored in the first half was the most points scored by the team since they defeated the New York Giants 31-21 on Nov. 19, 2000.

At Minnesota (10/13), the Lions passing attack recorded 25 pass completions, 41 pass attempts and 309 yards passing which all marked a team season-high for the squad.

WR Az-Zahir Hakim's 52-yard reception from QB Joey Harrington vs. New Orleans (9/29) tied a team-long mark for the season set by RB James Stewart vs. Green Bay (9/22). He also finished the game with 98 yards receiving, which is the most receiving yards by a Lion this season.

WR Bill Schroeder's 38-yard touchdown reception from Harrington vs. New Orleans (9/29) marked the first of his career as a Detroit Lion and was also the third-longest touchdown throw of Harrington's career.

RB James Stewart 37-yard run in the final quarter vs. New Orleans (9/29) helped him to surpass the 5,000-yard barrier for his career. He now has 5,068 yards in his eight-year career.

The Lions' game vs. Green Bay (9/22) marked the first time two running backs (James Stewart and Lamont Warren) had touchdown catches of at least 35 yards in same game since 9/25/94 (Cleveland, Leroy Hoard, 65, Eric Metcalf, 57).

The 39-yard touchdown strike from QB Joey Harrington to RB Lamont Warren vs. Green Bay (9/22) was the first touchdown pass of Harrington's career and also represented a career-long touchdown reception for Warren.

RB James Stewart's 52-yard touchdown reception from Harrington versus Green Bay (9/22) was the second-longest reception of his career. Last year, Stewart caught a 56-yard reception at Chicago (12/2).

During the team's opening game of the 2002 season at Miami, WR Az-Zahir Hakim recorded nine receptions, which was a career-high mark for the fifth-year receiver.

Michael Ricks' 49-yard reception vs. Miami (9/8) during the team's opening day game in 2002 marked the longest reception by a Lions tight end since David Sloan caught a 59-yard reception vs. New England on Thanksgiving (11/23/00) of 2000.

Last year, the offense finished sixth in team passing in the NFL by netting 224.8 yards per game. During the 2000 season, the Lions ranked 25th in passing (167.2 yards/gm).

BIG-PLAY CAPABILITY The Lions have been able to move the ball this season as evidenced by their 41 plays accumulated that have gone for 20 yards or more. Ten of the 41 plays are a result of the ground attack, while 31 have been a result of the air attack. Nine of the plays have resulted in a touchdown and 32 have resulted in at least a first down. Last season, the Lions had a total of nine plays go for 30 or more yards through the air, compared to this season, where they already have 15 passing plays of 30 yards or more with three games left PLAYS FROM SCRIMMAGE OF 20 YARDS OR MORE Yds Qtr Play Player (Passer) Opp Date Result 1. 64 1 Pa A. According to NFL.com statistics, the Lions’ two starting cornerbacks (Chris Cash and Todd Lyght) are ranked first and

second respectively in tackles amongst cornerbacks in the NFL. Cash has 78 total tackles, while Lyght has 77 total tackles. CB Todd Lyght has quietly been having a solid year. He currently is in third place on the Lions with 96 tackles, which

also represents a career-high tackle total for the 12-year veteran. DT Luther Elliss’ 13-yard sack on QB Jake Plummer in the first quarter at Arizona (12/8) was his 2.5th sack of the

season and the 27th of his career. DE Kalimba Edward’s recorded a single-game, career-high two sacks on QB Jake Plummer at Arizona (12/8). Edwards

currently leads the team with 5.5 sacks on the season. DE James Hall recorded his second sack of the season on QB Jake Plummer at Arizona (12/8). LB Chris Claiborne deflected a Cardinals QB Jake Plummer pass in the second quarter at Arizona (12/8) and the play

resulted in an interception by Lions CB Todd Lyght. It marked Lyght’s second interception of the season and the 37th of his career.

CB Chris Cash’s interception of QB Tom Brady vs. New England (10/28) marked the first INT of his NFL career. At Chicago (11/24), the defense only allowed the Bears 75 yards rushing on 25 carries (3.0 avg.). LB Barrett Green forced two fumbles at Chicago (11/24). It represented a single-game, career-high mark for the third-

year linebacker. DE Kalimba Edwards’ sack of QB Chris Chandler in the first quarter at Chicago (11/24) was his 3.5th sack of the

season. S Bracy Walker’s five-yard sack of QB Jim Miller in the fourth quarter at Chicago (11/24) marked the first sack of his

career. DE James Hall recorded his first career PAT block vs. the New York Jets (11/17). It was the first time a Lion had blocked

a PAT since Ray Oldham did at Minnesota on 9/20/81. CB Todd Lyght’s interception of QB Chad Pennington vs. the New York Jets (11/17) was his first interception of the

season and the 36th of his 12-year career. S Corey Harris’ seven-yard sack of QB Brett Favre at GB (11/10) was his second sack of the season and the fifth of his

career. LB Donte Curry’s forced fumble in the third quarter on Packers RB Najeh Davenport at GB (11/10) was the third forced

fumble of his career. DT Shaun Rogers recovered a fumble and forced two on the day. Detroit’s defensive unit was a major reason the team defeated Dallas on November 3. The Lions held the Cowboys to only

seven points on the day, which was the fewest points allowed by the team this season. The squad also held the Cowboys to a mere 225 yards of total offense, which was only one yard shy of the team’s best mark this season (224 vs. Chicago on Oct. 20).

In allowing only 71 yards rushing vs. Dallas (11/3), the Lions defense has held opponents to under 90-yards rushing for three consecutive games (89 vs. Chicago, 10/20; 74 at Buffalo, 10/27) for the first time since the 1999 season when Detroit yielded only 61 rushing yards at Carolina (10/24/99), 72 vs. Tampa Bay (10/31/99) and 57 vs. St. Louis (11/7/99). It’s the first time since the 2000 campaign that the Lions have held their opponents to less than 75 rushing yards in consecutive games (53 at N.Y. Giants, 11/19/00 and 66 vs. New England, 11/23/00).

The Lions’ five sacks vs. Dallas (11/3) was a season-best for the defensive unit thus far in 2002. The last time the Lions recorded at least five sacks in a single game was at Minnesota (10/14/01) when they posted six for 46 yards lost.

Both LB Donte` Curry and DE Robert Porcher collected two sacks vs. Dallas (11/3). It marked the first time two Lions’ defenders had multi-sack performances in a single game since Oct. 14, 2001 when both LB Chris Claiborne and DT Shaun Rogers recorded two sacks apiece.

LB Donte` Curry’s two sacks vs. Dallas (11/3) marked the first multi-sack day of his career. It marked the second and third sacks of his career. He also had a career-high two forced fumbles on the day.

DE Kalimba Edwards recorded his second sack of the season at Buffalo (10/27) and added to that total by acquiring a half-a-sack in the third quarter. He now has 2.5 sacks on the season.

CB Chris Cash’s fumble recovery on the muffed kickoff in the second quarter at Buffalo (10/27) helped to set up the Lions go-ahead touchdown run by RB James Stewart with one minute to go until halftime. It was Cash’s first career fumble recovery.

With 3:07 remaining in the game and the Lions down seven points at Buffalo (10/27), S Bracy Walker came up with a big play as he forced RB Travis Henry to fumble deep in their own territory. It was his second forced fumble of the season.

CB Eric Davis’ interception of Bears QB Chris Chandler late in the second quarter was his first INT of the season and 38th of his career.

S Corey Harris’ forced fumble on Bears RB Anthony Thomas at the end of the 3rd quarter was his second forced fumble of the season and the 11th of his career. Harris also came up big when he recorded his first sack of the season late in the fourth quarter to set up the Lions’ game-tying field goal. It marked the second sack of the season for Harris and the fifth of his career.

DT Luther Elliss’ sack of Bears QB Chris Chandler in the first quarter marked the first sack of the year for the eight-year veteran and the 25.5 of his career. Elliss also recorded a forced fumble vs. Chicago (10/20) which was recovered by DT Kelvin Pritchett. On the very next play, RB James Stewart plunged in the endzone for a six-yard TD run.

LB Donte` Curry’s sack of QB Chris Chandler in the second quarter vs. Chicago (10/20) marked the first sack of his career. Curry also recovered his first career fumble after S Corey Harris forced RB Anthony Thomas to fumble in the third quarter.

With James Hall’s 22-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown vs. New Orleans (9/29) and Chris Claiborne’s 20-yard interception return for a touchdown at Minnesota (10/13), the Lions defensive unit has scored a touchdown in consecutive games for the first time since 1997 when DE Tracey Scroggins returned a fumble recovery 17 yards for a touchdown vs. Chicago (11/27) followed by CB Bryant Westbrook’s 64-yard interception return for a touchdown at Miami (12/7).

DE Jared DeVries’ four-yard sack of Daunte Culpepper at Minnesota (10/13) was the first sack of his four-year career. S Corey Harris’ sack of Daunte Culpepper in the second quarter vs. Minnesota (10/13) was his first sack of the season

DE Kalimba Edwards recorded the first sack and forced fumble of his career on QB Aaron Brooks in the first quarter vs.

New Orleans (9/29). DE James Hall returned the fumble 22 yards for his second career touchdown. His first came last season against the Green Bay Packers (11/22) when he returned a fumble from Brett Favre for an eight-yard score. Hall also recorded his first sack of the season, a six-yard loss.

DE Robert Porcher recorded his first sack of the season on QB Aaron Brooks vs. New Orleans (9/29). The sack helped to increase his career tally to 86.5 career sacks.

S Brian Walker's sack of Brett Favre versus Green Bay (9/22) was the first sack of the year for the Lions in 2001 and also the fourth sack of his career. Walker's sack also forced Favre to fumble, while DE Robert Porcher recovered. It marked the fourth forced fumble of Walker's career and the fourth fumble recovery of Porcher's career.

SSPPEECCIIAALL TTEEAAMMSS AANNDD MMIISSCCEELLLLAANNEEOOUUSS P John Jett has currently dropped 21 punts inside the 20-yard line, which is tied for fourth in the NFC. Jett has already

eclipsed his mark of 16 punts downed inside the 20-yard line from a season ago in 2001. Jett is also currently ranked fourth in the NFC with a net punting average of 37.4 yards per punt. He has only had seven touchbacks despite his 80 punts.

When the Lions signed both Jeff Gooch and Bracy Walker in the off-season, they expected to get solid special teams play and both have not disappointed. Walker and Gooch have combined for 66 special teams tackles on the season (Gooch-36, Walker-30).

Lions punt returner Eddie Drummond returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown at Arizona (12/8) to give the Lions an early 7-0 lead. It marked the longest punt return for the Lions this season and the second punt return for a touchdown (A. Hakim 72-yard punt return vs. New Orleans). It was the longest punt return by the Lions since Desmond Howarde returned a punt 80 yards at Indianapolis on Oct. 29, 2000.

Rafael Cooper’s 55-yard kickoff return at Arizona (12/8) was the Lions’ second-longest kickoff return of the season. Only Desmond Howard’s 70-yard kickoff return vs. New Orleans was longer.

IINNDDIIVVIIDDUUAALL BBRREEAAKKDDOOWWNNSS CCLLAAIIBBOORRNNEE’’SS CCOONNSSIISSTTEENNCCYY Linebacker Chris Claiborne has developed into the talent the Lions envisioned when they made him the ninth overall draft selection out of the University of Southern California in the 1999 NFL Draft. His impact was felt immediately in 1999 as he started 13 games his rookie season, 14 games his second season in 2000 and was one of only six Lion defenders last year to start all 16 games. Claiborne filled the weak-side linebacker slot his first two seasons, but was reverted back to his college position of middle linebacker four games into last season’s campaign. He responded by breathing fire into the defensive corps and ended up leading the team with 163 tackles (92 solo), which was the fifth-best single-season tackle posting in franchise history. This season, he has continued to excel. He currently leads the team with 122 tackles (75 solo) and is tied for the fourth–most interceptions in the NFL with three. With the score locked at 20 apiece and less than four minutes remaining in regulation, LB Chris Claiborne shut down a

Cardinals drive as he recorded his fourth sack of the season on a third down and forced the Cardinals to punt. Claiborne deflected a Cardinals QB Jake Plummer pass in the second quarter at Arizona (12/8) and the play resulted in an

interception by Lions CB Todd Lyght. Claiborne’s block punt vs. the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving (11/28) was Detroit’s first blocked punt of the

season and the first blocked punt by a Detroit player since Larry Foster blocked one on Nov. 19, 2000 vs. the New York Giants. Claiborne’s 13 tackles at Chicago (11/24) helped him to surpass the century mark in tackles for the third consecutive

season (125 in 2000 and 167 in 2001), and it nearly marked the fourth as he recorded 97 during his rookie season in 1999. Claiborne recorded his third sack of the season on QB Chad Pennington vs. the New York Jets (11/17). Claiborne’s sack of QB Chad Hutchinson vs. Dallas (11/3) was his second sack of the season and the eighth of his career. Claiborne’s sack at Buffalo (10/27) of QB Drew Bledsoe marked his first sack of

the season and the seventh of his career. Claiborne’s 20-yard interception return for a touchdown at Minnesota (10/13)

marked his first career touchdown, third interception of the season and the sixth of his career. Claiborne’s three interceptions in as many games (Week 3-5) is the most by a Lions defender since S Willie Clay intercepted a pass in each of the final three games of the 1995 season. Claiborne’s interception of New Orleans QB Aaron Brooks marked his second

interception of the season and the fifth of his career. Claiborne’s interception of Brett Favre versus Green Bay (9/22) marked the fourth in

Jason Hanson’s 43-yard game-winning field goal. It marked the second fourth-quarter comeback of his NFL career. His first fourth-quarter come-from-behind victory was vs. Chicago (10/20). With the Lions trailing 17-20 with 2:21 remaining in the game, Harrington completed five consecutive passes for 73 yards during the drive, which set up Jason Hanson’s 24-yard field goal to push the game into overtime.

Harrington’s 25 pass completions, 41 pass attempts and 309 yards passing at Minnesota (10/13) marked a team season-high, career-high and a franchise rookie passing-high for a quarterback. His two touchdown passes also tied a career game-high and franchise-high for a rookie quarterback (tied with four other Lions rookie quarterbacks).

He had a then-career day vs. New Orleans (9/29) after completing 20-of-35 pass attempts for 267 yards and one touchdown pass in the Lions first win of the season.

. Jeff Komlo 52.8 368 183 49.7 2,238 11 23 1979 5 “LITTLE MAN” STEWART MAKING BIG IMPRESSION RB James Stewart continues to prove over and over again that he is the workhorse running weapon that the Lions envisioned when they signed him as an unrestricted free agent from Jacksonville Feb. 14, 2000. Thus far in 2002, Stewart has rushed for 962 yards on 208 carries (4.6 avg.) and has caught 42 receptions for 311 yards (7.4 avg.). Stewart currently has 1,273 all-purpose yards and is averaging 5.1 yards per touch this season. At Chicago (11/24), RB James Stewart surpassed the 1,000-yard all-purpose mark, which is the third time in his career he

has accomplished such a feat (1,180 in 1999 with Jacksonville and 1,523 in 2000 with Detroit. Stewart’s three catches for 34 yards at Arizona (12/8), including his 28-yard reception in the second quarter, helped him

surpass his single-season career-best mark of 41 receptions caught during the 1997 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Stewart currently has 42 receptions on the season. He now needs only 26 yards to surpass his single-season career-best mark for receiving yards.

Stewart is currently ranked fifth in the NFC with 962 yards rushing and with only 38 more yards rushing this season, Stewart will reach the 1,000-yard mark for the second time in his career (1,184 yards in 2000). Stewart’s run to 1,000 yards will mark the 16th time a player has rushed for 1,000 yards in a single season in Lions’ history. Stewart currently has gained 2,831 yards since signing with Detroit prior to the 2000 season. His 2,831 yards rank him in eighth place on the Lions’ all-time career rushing yards list. He needs 169 rushing yards to reach 3,000 as a Lion and become only the eighth player in franchise history to hit that plateau. He needs 242 yards to move past Mel Farr (3,072, 1967-73) for seventh place on the Lions’ all-time career rushing chart.

Stewart is tied for the fourth-best average in the NFL in yards per rushing attempt (4.6) for running backs that have a minimum of 200 carries. Only Minnesota RB Michael Bennett (5.5), Denver RB Clinton Portis (5.1) and Kansas City RB Priest Holmes (4.9) own a better mark.

Stewart’s 23-yard touchdown run in the third quarter at Chicago (11/24) was a season-long TD run for the eight-year veteran. It marked his fourth rushing TD of the season and the third against the Bears on the year.

Stewart recorded the 13th 100-yard rushing game of his career at GB (11/10) when he carried the ball 15 times for 122 yards, which included a career-long 56-yard run. The 8.1 yards per carry average was the best single-game mark on the season for the eight-year veteran.

Stewart’s 12-yard reception on fourth-and-three with 1:54 remaining vs. Dallas (11/3) helped to set up K Jason Hanson’s game-winning 43-yard field goal. It was the second fourth-quarter comeback victory by the Lions in 2002. Stewart recorded a career-high eight receptions for 53 yards at Buffalo (10/27).

Stewart’s two-yard TD run at Buffalo (10/27) marked his third rushing touchdown of the season Stewart had a career day vs. Chicago (10/20) when he posted career-high marks in rushing yards (172) and combined

yardage (200 – 172 rushing and 28 receiving). He carried the ball 32 times for a 5.4-yard per carry average along with two rushing touchdowns (first time this season). He also caught two passes for 28 yards. It marked the first time a Lions running back had rushed for 100 yards since he did it last season on Thanksgiving Day vs. Green Bay (102 yards) on Nov. 22, 2001. It was the 19th highest single-game rushing total by a running back in franchise history and it also marked the most yards by a Lions running back since Barry Sanders rushed for 184 yards vs. the New York Jets on December 21, 1997.

The Lions are 8-3 (.727) in games that Stewart records more-than-20 rushing attempts. Stewart’s 37-yard run in the final quarter vs. New Orleans (9/29) helped him to surpass the 5,000-yard barrier for his

career.

Stewart's 52-yard touchdown reception from Harrington versus Green Bay (9/22) was the second-longest reception of his career. Last year, Stewart caught a 56-yard reception at Chicago (12/2). Stewart was mightily productive when he touched the ball last season. He recorded 166 touches (143 rushes and 23

receptions) for a combined tally of 927 total yards, averaging 5.6 yards per touch. Of the 11 games Stewart played in 2001, he has averaged over 5.0 rushing yards per game in five of those contests. He

rushed 13 times for 88 yards (6.8 avg.) vs. St. Louis Oct. 8, 16 times for 108 yards (6.8 avg.) at Minnesota Oct. 14, 14 times for 102 yards (7.3 avg.) vs. Green Bay Nov. 22, 15 times for 78 yards (5.2 avg.) at Tampa Bay Dec. 9 and 13 times for 69 yards (5.3 avg.) in the Lions’ season finale win over Dallas Jan. 6.

At Chicago Dec. 2, Stewart scored his only rushing touchdown of the season, a three-yard run, and caught a career-long 53-yard pass on the Lions’ 95-yard touchdown scoring drive in the first quarter. The 95-yard drive (10 plays, 5:55) marked the longest scoring drive (yardage) of the season for the Lions.

After missing four-straight games due to an ankle injury, Stewart rushed for his 11th career 100-yard game (fifth as Lions and second of 2001) vs. Green Bay Nov. 22. He recorded 102 yards on 14 carries (7.3 avg.) and had a season-long run of 38 yards. He was a major part of the Lions’ rushing attack that gained 167 yards, after averaging 53 yards in the previous five-game span.

Stewart rushed for a season-high 108 yards at Minnesota Oct. 14 on 16 carries (6.8 avg.). His 100-yard rushing effort was the 10th of his career and the fourth since joining the Lions prior to 2000 season. He also caught three passes for 22 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown that sparked the Lions’ offense in the second half.

Oct. 8 vs. St. Louis, Stewart had 13 carries for 88 yards (6.8 avg.), including a then season-long run of 30 yards. He also caught four passes for 36 yards.

Stewart is in the NFL record books as one of five players in league history to rush for five touchdowns in a game (vs. Philadelphia 10/12/97).

GETTING A KICK OUT OF HANSON In two-time Pro Bowler Jason Hanson, the Lions are blessed with one of the NFL's top all-around kickers. He is deadly accurate inside the 50-yard line, and vs. Minnesota (10/13), he became the Lions’ all-time franchise leader in field goals after nailing the 245th of his career, surpassing former Lion great Eddie Murray. Versus New England (11/28), Hanson became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer after nailing four field goals. On the season, Hanson is 20-for-23 on field goal attempts.

Page 18: LIONS HOST FORMER DIVISION FOE BUCCANEERS ...prod.static.lions.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/...Jon Gruden, who spent four seasons guiding the Oakland Raiders to a 38-26 overall

K Jason Hanson now ranks first in field goals made for the franchise (259) and points scored (1,129). He is also ranked in second-place on three of the Lions’ major career scoring and kicking records. His career totals of 324 field goal attempts, 352 extra points and 357 extra points attempted all trail Eddie Murray’s career totals. Murray’s career totals include 244 field goals in 325 attempts, 1,113 points scored and 381 extra points in 386 attempts.

Hanson’s 26 and 20-yard field goals at Arizona marked his 19th and 20th field goals of the season. Hanson has now booted at least 20 field goals in each of the last six seasons and it also marked the ninth time in his career he has accomplished such a feat.

Hanson’s four field goals (23, 45, 39, 46) vs. New England (11/28) on Thanksgiving helped him to surpass Eddie Murray to become the franchise’s all-time scoring leader). Coming into the game, he needed five points to surpass Murray’s mark of 1,109 points. His 45-yard field goal in the second quarter helped him break the mark.

Hanson’s three field goals (42,44 and 43) vs. Dallas (11/3) helped the Lions defeat the Cowboys 9-7. His 43-yarder with less than two minutes remaining in regulation ended up being the game-winner. The last time Hanson scored all of the Lions’ points was in a 12-15 loss at Tampa Bay on 12/9/01. The last Lions win with Hanson being the lone point-scorer was at Washington (15-10) on 9/10/00.

Hanson nailed a 35-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter at Buffalo (10/27) to pull the Lions within seven points. Hanson went three-for-four on field goal attempts vs. Chicago (10/20) and nailed a 24-yarder to send it into overtime and a

48-yard field goal in overtime to seal the Lions victory. He made a 30, 24 and a 48-yard attempt on the day and missed a 55-yard field goal early in the first quarter.

Hanson’s 49-yard field goal vs. Minnesota (10/13) marked the 245th field goal of his career and made him the franchise’s all-time leader in field goals made.

Hanson's 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter vs. the New Orleans Saints (9/29) was his fourth field goal of the game. It also tied him with former Lions great Eddie Murray for the most field goals kicked in franchise history (244). The Lions are 12-1 when Hanson kicks at least four field goals in a game.

Hanson's 33-yard field goal in the first quarter vs. Green Bay (9/22) marked the first field goal ever scored inside Ford Field.

Hanson also made his 21st career field goal from 50-yards or more at Tampa Bay Dec. 9, 2001 when he connected on a 50-yarder. In doing so, he became the sixth player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

By connecting on a 54-yarder vs. Green Bay Nov. 22, Hanson became the eighth player in NFL history to record at least 20 career 50-yard field goals. The 54-yarder tied (accomplished four other times) for the third longest field goal made in Lions’ history. He also nailed a 33-yarder vs. the Packers, as he finished the day two-for-two on field goal attempts.

On the first extra point Hanson kicked at Arizona Nov. 18, he became the second player in Lions' history to score 1,000 career points. The first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark was Eddie Murray, who scored 1,113 points during his 12-year career (1980-91) in Detroit.

His seven points in the 2000 season finale vs. Chicago put him over the 100-point plateau for the sixth time in his first nine NFL seasons (101 points), and fourth year in a row. Among his 100-point seasons, he holds the top two spots on the team's all-time seasonal scoring list -- a team-record 132 points in 1995 and 130 points in '93.

Detroit is 46-28 (.621) during Hanson's career when he kicks two-or-more field goals in a game. Also, the club is 26-9 (.743) when Hanson kicks three-or-more field goals, and is 12-2 (.857) when he makes at least four field goals in a contest.

PORCHER’S PRESSURES DE Robert Porcher is the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks by registering 90.5, having surpassed Al “Bubba” Baker’s previous record of 75.5 career QB takedowns early in the 2001 season. On Jan. 2, 2002, Porcher was named to his third Pro Bowl in the past five seasons, after having a solid year with 11.0 sacks and four multi-sack games. DE Robert Porcher’s sack of QB Brett Favre at GB (11/10) was his fifth sack of the season and helped him to surpass the

90-sack mark for his career. He was also credited with a forced fumble on the play, marking the second time during the season and the 22nd of his career.

Porcher’s two sacks vs. Dallas QB Chad Hutchinson represented his third and fourth sack of the season and marked the 21st multi-sack outing of his career. His second sack came during a critical time in the game. With 48 seconds remaining in regulation, Porcher’s 11-yard sack of Hutchinson chewed both an extra down and time off the clock.

Porcher’s nine-yard sack of Bills QB Drew Bledsoe at Buffalo (10/27) was his second sack of the season and the 87.5th of his career.

Porcher recorded the 600th tackle of his career vs. Chicago (10/20) when he dropped Bears RB Anthony Thomas. Porcher is currently ranked eighth on the Lions’ all-time tackle chart.

Porcher recorded his first sack of the season on QB Aaron Brooks vs. New Orleans (9/29). The sack helped to increase his career tally to 86.5 career sacks.

During the inaugural game at Ford Field vs. Green Bay (9/22), Porcher's fumble recovery of Brett Favre's fumble marked the fourth fumble recovery of Porcher's career.

In the Lions’ first win of the season vs. Minnesota Dec. 16, Porcher recorded two sacks, which was his 21st career multi-sack game and fourth of the 2001 season.

At San Francisco Nov. 4, Porcher collected his 20th career multi-sack game, by recording two sacks (14 yards loss), and he also caused a fumble. On his first sack, he surpassed the 80-sack mark for his career, becoming the first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark.

Porcher collected his 19th career multi-sack outing with a two-sack performance at Minnesota Oct. 14. Porcher became the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks on his first of two sacks against Cleveland Sept. 23. He

broke Al “Bubba” Baker’s mark of 75.5 that he recorded from 1978-82. Porcher recorded his 18th career multi-sack effort at Cleveland Sept. 23 with a two-sack effort. Porcher’s 73 sacks since 1996 are the third-most quarterback takedowns recorded by any NFL player in that span. Only

New York Giants’ DE Michael Strahan ( ) and Tampa Bay’s LB Simeon Rice ( ) have recorded more sacks during that span.

Porcher also ranks eighth on the Lions’ career tackles list (since 1973) with 610 career stops. He is behind Jimmy Williams, who stands in seventh place with 653.

DON’T MESS WITH ROGERS Second-year DT Shaun Rogers made his presence known along the defensive front after being drafted by the Lions in the 2001 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas. The Lions traded up into the second round to make him the 61st player taken in the league’s annual selection meeting. Rogers led all defensive lineman in the NFL with 97 total tackles. DT Shaun Rogers recorded his second sack of the season on QB Jake Plummer at Arizona (12/8). Rogers’ seven-yard sack at Chicago (11/24) was the first sack of the season for the second-year player. Rogers finished his rookie campaign ranking third on the team with 97 tackles (determined by coaches film review), and

had 62 solo stops. He illustrated the ability to make tackles despite double teams and contributed on defense in both rushing and passing situations. He started and played in all 16 games for the Lions during his first season in the NFL.

According to coaches’ film review, Rogers garnered 13 tackles for losses in 2001. Rogers 97 tackles are the most by a Lions’ defensive lineman since Michael Cofer garnered 107 defensive stops in 1984. According to press box statistics, Rogers accumulated 81 tackles (60 solo), which was the highest output among all

defensive linemen in the NFL last season. Rogers swarmed up 10 tackles (seven solo) in the Lions’ win vs. Dallas Jan. 6 in the 2001 season’s final game. His 10-

tackle performance was his third double-digit tackle outing of his rookie season. One of his 10 tackles occurred behind the line of scrimmage and he knocked down one pass in the game.

Rogers upped his 2001 sacks tally to 3.0 by accumulating a half-of-a-sack at Tampa Bay Dec. 9. After coaches film review, Rogers was credited with 10 tackles vs. Green Bay Nov. 22 (second 10-tackle performance of

season), and registered a season-high three tackles for losses. Nov. 11 vs. Tampa Bay, Rogers added to his sacks tally on the season with one quarterback takedown (five-yard loss)

against the Buccaneers. He placed his stamp on the Lions’ attempt at their first win of the season when he blocked two field goal attempts at San

Francisco Nov. 4. His second FG block was on a 19-yard attempt with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter that gave the Lions a chance to tie the game with one final drive. Rogers also blocked a 49-yard attempt in the second quarter of the game. His blocked field goal marked the first FG block since James Jones batted an attempt away at New Orleans Sept. 3, 2000.

Rogers recorded his first double-digit tackle outing of his career when he collected 11 tackles vs. Tennessee Oct. 21. Rogers collected his first career sack and first career multi-sack outing (1.5 for nine yards loss) at Minnesota Oct. 14. He batted down two passes for the first time in his career at Chicago Dec. 2, and recorded a total of six passes defensed on

the season. Eight defensive tackles and six defensive ends (14 defensive linemen) were drafted in front of Rogers in the 2001 NFL

Draft. Among those drafted ahead of Rogers, he accumulated (based on press box statistics) more tackles than any other player in that group. In fact, Rogers had 27 more tackles than the next highest tally accumulated by Cleveland DT Gerard Warren (61 tackles). Warren was the top defensive lineman taken in the 2001 Draft with the third overall pick.

CORY SLEDGE HAMMER FB Cory Schlesinger has blossomed in the Lions’ new West Coast offense and is arguably one of the league’s best all-around fullbacks. He is a key component of the Lions' running game as a bruising blocking back, and is an important part of the team’s passing attack. Last season, Schlesinger totaled career bests in nearly every offensive category. FB Cory Schlesinger’s 43-yard reception in the third quarter vs. the New York Jets (11/17) was a career-long reception

for the eight-year veteran. Schlesinger was a major reason RB James Stewart and the Lions’ offensive unit grounded out 192 yards on 39 carries

(4.9 avg.) vs. Chicago (10/20). His lead blocks on the Bears defense, including several on Pro Bowler Brian Urlacher, allowed Stewart to churn out a career-high 172 yards rushing.

During the inaugural game at Ford Field vs. Green Bay (9/22), Schlesinger's one-yard touchdown run marked the fifth rushing touchdown of his career. It also marked the first rushing touchdown in Ford Field and his second rushing touchdown of the season.

During the Lions first regular season game against the Miami Dolphins (9/8), Schlesinger plunged in for a one-yard touchdown run. It marked the fourth of his career.

Page 21: LIONS HOST FORMER DIVISION FOE BUCCANEERS ...prod.static.lions.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/...Jon Gruden, who spent four seasons guiding the Oakland Raiders to a 38-26 overall

Last season, Schlesinger was the Lions’ second-leading receiver with 60 receptions for 466 yards (both career highs). He gained 154 yards on 47 carries and has three rushing touchdowns (also career highs).

By recording 60 catches for 466 receiving yards last season, Schlesinger eclipsed his receiving totals of 41 receptions for 308 yards over the previous six seasons combined.

Schlesinger tied for ninth among all NFL running backs last season with 60 receptions. He had the highest tally of any fullback in the NFC, and was second only to Larry Centers for the most receptions by a fullback in the entire NFL.

CASHING IN Lions rookie CB Chris Cash has made an impact on the Lions’ defense this season with his ability to make tackles, especially in one-on-one situations with offensive opponents. According to Lions coaches film review, he is second on the team in tackles with 98 tackles (71 solo). According to NFL.com statistics, Cash is ranked first overall in the NFL in tackles among cornerbacks (78 stops). His tackles are even more impressive due to the fact that he played in one less game and started in three less games than most of the other defenders. RRIINNGGIINNGG EENNDDOORRSSEEMMEENNTTSS The Detroit Lions not only made numerous changes on the field this past off-season, but they also made significant changes off the field in order to strive for the ultimate goal, the Super Bowl. With key additions to the Lions secondary, wide receiving corps, and coaching staff, the Lions continue to add experience and leadership to the family. With the 2002 season on the rise, the Lions future looks to the knowledge and leadership that several players, coaches and front office staff members bring to the organization. The main component that the Lions' new off-season additions bring is the experience of winning a Super Bowl crown. Overall, seven coaches have won 16 rings, 11 front office members account for 15 rings and nine players total ten Super Bowl rings won. A total of 27 individuals account for 42 Super Bowl rings within the Lions organization. Lions President and CEO Matt Millen is the only player to earn Super Bowl championship rings with three different

teams -Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders (Super Bowl XV and XVIII), San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowl XXIV) and Washington Redskins (Super Bowl XXVI). Overall, Millen earned four Super Bowl rings as a player.

Lions Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg earned a championship ring with the Green Bay Packers when he was the team's Quarterbacks Coach on their way to a Super Bowl XXXI win.

CB Eric Davis received his Super Bowl ring during the San Francisco 49ers championship run in the mid-1990's, as that team won Super Bowl XXIX.

WR/KR Desmond Howard became the only special teams player in Super Bowl history to earn MVP honors when he catapulted the Green Bay Packers to a title in Super Bowl XXXI. Also, LB Brian Williams, WR Bill Schroeder and assistant equipment manager Tim O’Neill were part of that same Super Bowl championship team.

S Corey Harris captured his first Super Bowl Ring with the Baltimore Ravens, as that team won Super Bowl XXXV. Harris was a mainstay at the safety position for the record setting Ravens defense during their championship run.

CB Todd Lyght, WR Az Zahir- Hakim, and Lions Senior Vice President of Business Operations/General Counsel Kevin Warren were a part of the St. Louis Rams' run to the Super Bowl XXXIV title.

P John Jett captured two Super Bowl rings with the Dallas Cowboys when he was the teams punter in Super Bowl XXVIII and XXX.

G Ray Brown owns a Super Bowl ring from when he was a part of the Washington Redskins unit that beat the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI. Brown was on the Injured Reserve list the entire season, but did collect a ring nonetheless.

Assistant Defensive Line Coach/Pass Rush Specialist Charles Haley holds the NFL record having won five Super Bowl rings as a player. He won back-to-back titles with San Francisco in Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV and with Dallas in Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX.

Page 22: LIONS HOST FORMER DIVISION FOE BUCCANEERS ...prod.static.lions.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/...Jon Gruden, who spent four seasons guiding the Oakland Raiders to a 38-26 overall

Bill Tobin was a member of the Chicago Bears organization when the Bears won Super Bowl XX. Tobin was the Director of Player Personnel (currently Lions Executive Director of Player Personnel). Also, Lions/BLESTO Personnel Scout Dennis Gentry was a player for that same Super Bowl championship team.

Offensive Coordinator Maurice Carthon captured two championship rings during his playing days as a fullback for the New York Giants. Carthon and the Giants earned their rings in Super Bowl XXI and XXV.

Larry Kirksey, the Lions wide receivers coach, was the San Francisco 49ers Receivers Coach when they won Super Bowl XXIV. His group of receivers set a Super Bowl record by catching six touchdowns in their win over San Diego.

Special Assistant on Offense Sherman Lewis, is second on the coaching staff with four Super Bowl rings. Lewis won three of four rings with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XIX, XXIII and XXIV. Lewis collected his fourth ring with the Green Bay Packers when that team won Super Bowl XXXI.

Assistant Defensive Line Coach John Marshall has earned two championship rings, during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, when the team won Super Bowls XXIII and XXIX.

Lions Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing, Bill Keenist, was a Public Relations Assistant for the Washington Redskins when that team won Super Bowl XVII.

Security Representative Ricky Sandoval, was the Security Representative for the San Francisco 49ers and holds three Super Bowl Rings. Those teams won Super Bowl XXIII, XXIV and XXIX.

Lions Senior Director of Football Administration/Staff Counsel Martin Mayhew played for the Washington Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI Championship squad, alongside Matt Millen. Current Head Athletic Trainer Al Bellamy was on Washington's athletic training staff and Lions strength and conditioning coach Jason Arapoff was a conditioning assistant on the same Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI team.

Barbi Leach, who is the administrative assistant to Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg, was a part of the San Francisco 49ers staff that won Super Bowl XXIX following the 1994 season.

Former Detroit Lions Head Coach and current Special Consultant Monte Clark was the offensive line coach of the 1972 perfect season team of the Miami Dolphins when they went 17-0 on their way to winning Super Bowl VII.

FFOORRDD FFIIEELLDD On November 16, 1999, a new era in Detroit Lions history began when the team officially launched the construction of its new downtown Detroit stadium, Ford Field. The Lions’ new home is an incomparable 65,000-seat facility that includes a giant glass wall, revealing the picturesque Detroit skyline, and the old Hudson’s Warehouse, originally built in 1920. The massive project encompasses a total of 1.85 million square feet of development. The old Hudson’s Warehouse, a major cornerstone of Ford Field, houses most of the stadium luxury seats, pressbox, restaurants, food courts, lounge areas, banquet facilities, entertainment venues and commercial space. The inclusion of the warehouse into the stadium project allows the sightlines at Ford Field to be among the very best in the NFL. In fact, even the locker room facilities have been built in the basement of the seven-story historic Detroit structure. Detroit plays its first home preseason game at Ford Field Saturday, August 24 when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Motor City. The Lions will celebrate the inaugural regular season game at Ford Field Sunday, September 22 when they play host to their long-time divisional rival, Green Bay Packers. The 2002 home opener marks the return of the Lions to downtown Detroit for the first time since 1974. On Saturday, October 12, 2002, Ford Field had its first large event outside of Lions’ football games when the Rolling Stones rocked the house during their World tour. Prior to opening this year, Ford Field captured the attentive eye of NFL owners. Ford Field was selected unanimously November 1, 2000 by NFL ownership to be the host site of Super Bowl XL to be played February 5, 2006.
