REMINDERS Firstly, a very big thank you to the majority of drivers and pedestrians who can be relied on to do the right thing. On any given morning or afternoon there are plenty of adults and children who always take care, keep watch and do what is safe for themselves and others. Both before and after school, the school’s exit and entry pathways, carpark area and driveways are at their busiest. Every school has the same issues at peak periods. Hundreds of people arriving or leaving, all at the same time, creates a short period of extremely crowded and potentially unsafe situations. Generally, our community is to be congratulated on how smoothly and quickly students and adults enter and/or leave the school each day. Invariably though, the impatience of someone running late or someone not following the rules occasionally causes frustration and sometimes danger to others. We all have a collective responsibility to keep ourselves and others safe. If we are drivers, we also have a responsibility to drive safely and assist with traffic and pedestrian flow by stopping at crossings, following speed limits, not double parking and not parking across driveways. When using the school’s pickup and drop-off zone, drivers are also reminded that for this area to function and work safely and effectively, then the following applies:- Children must be independently able to get in and out of the car without the need

for an adult to get out of the car and assist. If an adult needs to get out of the car and help, then street parking has to be found. The drop-off zone is for quick stops only.

For safety, children need to get in or out of the car on the pathway side. Walking around a car and/or stopping to get a bag out of the boot is dangerous. Recently we had a child getting a bag out of the car boot; she dropped her drink bottle which rolled near the car behind; the driver of that car was busy watching her child get out of her car and then as she was about to drive off, got the fright of her life when, a child bobbed up in front with drink bottle in hand. Please remind your children of the need to step out of the car, onto the pathway and stay there, even if they drop something onto the road way.

Once cars begin moving after school, if your child hasn’t arrived, then you need to move on and come around again. Cars that ‘stop and prop’ affect traffic flow and cause other drivers to have to swing out and pass other cars. This then adds to congestion and potentially unsafe situtations in the carpark area.

Whilst driving through the carpark area and out the exit gate, drivers are advised to do so at reduced speed, no more than 15km. It is a go slow zone from entry to exit.

HOUSE ATHLETICS

The House Athletics were held at Meadow Glenn Track on Thursday 12th June.

There was fantastic team spirit on display with students from Gr 3-6 giving their very best when

competing in their selected events.

Thank–you to the many parents who gave up their time to assist on the day.

In particular, thank-you to Ilkin Mehmet who assisted with the set up and packing up as well.

Your support was greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the Grade 3-6 GK staff, Sandra P, Leanda and Gail who did a fantastic job organis-

ing and running the events throughout the day.

The House team competition was close fought with Eucalypt ( Blue ) winning by 19 pts from Gre-

villea ( red ). Terrific to see Eucalypt win as it has been 9 years since they have won the title.

From this event a training squad will be selected for the District Athletics. Students who are se-

lected for this squad will be notified in term 3.

DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY

Congratulations to the following students who competed at

the Division Cross Country held at Bundoora Park on

Wednesday 11th June. There were some terrific performances

with the following students qualifying for the Regional Cross

Country .

STATE FOOTBALL TRIALS

Congratulations to grade 6 student Liam M who made it through to the final 42 footballers who

were trying out at the State football camp that was held at Carey Grammar over the Queen’s

Birthday weekend. Liam was involved in high level training and trial matches. Even though Liam

didn’t make the final 23 it was an outstanding achievement to make it to the final stage, consider-

ing 6000 students tried out State-wide.

STATE BASKETBALL TRIALS

Congratulations and good luck to grade 6 students Courtney W and Liam M who have been select-

ed to try out for the State Basketball Trials that will be held over the school holidays. I wish them

all the best their endeavours.

Grade 6 Expo Afternoon

‘Human Impact’

Dear Parents/Teachers/Buddies,

During Term 2, the Grade 6 students have been hard at work researching an area within Australia (New Zealand) that has been

effected by a natural disaster. Students have investigated how Australia experiences a range of 'natural disasters' including bushfires,

floods, severe storms, earthquakes, cyclones, sink holes, droughts and landslides. They discussed how these events cause

great financial hardship for individuals and communities, and how they can result in loss of life. 5 Students also dis-

cussed how these events are considered both a part of the natural cycle of weather patterns in Australia as well as be-

ing affected by human factors.

We would love to share with you their projects that they have been busy working on for the past 4 weeks. On Thurs-

day 26th June, the grade 6 students will open up their classrooms for an Expo afternoon. From 2:00-3:30, you

will have an opportunity to visit, as the students discuss their research.

The Roman Holiday Feast lunch is next week. This will be held over two days: Preps to 2’s will be on Wednesday, 25th June and Grades 3-6 will be on Thursday, 26th June. Please note that no other lunch orders can be order over these two days by any grades but normal lunch orders will be available on Friday 27th - the last day of term. ALL ORDERS MUST BE IN BY 9AM TOMORROW. I will not be able to accept late orders. Thank you to everyone who has put their name down to help out on the Wednesday, as yet, I don’t have any extra help for the Thursday so if anyone has a spare couple of hours, I would really appreciate the help.

VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED for the 1st or 4th Wednesday, and from Term 3, the 4th Thursday of the month. If you are able to help out once a month 9am to 11.45am on any of these days, or can put your name on our emergency list, please contact me in the canteen with your details or if you have any questions about what is involved when you volunteer in the canteen. I am available Tuesday to Friday 8.30am to 1.30pm (I am not always able to chat Fridays until we have finished preparing the lunches).

At Monday’s assembly, Isabella 6R will be shaving her hair to raise money

for the Leukaemia Foundation. Every day 31 Australians get the news

they have blood cancer, a life threatening condition that usually effects chil-

dren and young people. Raising money through the World’s Greatest Shave

will help the Leukaemia Foundation fund research into this condition as

well as allow them to provide practical and emotional support to those who

have been diagnosed with blood cancer.

Isabella’s goal is to raise $1000 to support the work of the Leukaemia Foun-

dation. We can all help her to achieve her goal by contributing to the Leu-

kaemia Foundation through her personal page (by searching for her name

at http://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/) or making a gold coin donation

when you come to watch her have her have hair shaved at the school as-

sembly. Donations can also be left at the School office up until Friday 27

June 2014 to support this worthy cause.

ONE WEEK TO GO – CADBURY CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISER!

Families are asked to sell one box of assorted Cadbury Freddo frog chocolates that was sent home

with the eldest child in your family. There are 50 assorted Freddos in a box valued at $1 each.

All money collected and unsold chocolate due back by Thursday the 26th of June.

This is the major PFA fundraiser for the year.

Payment by cash, cheque (Glen Katherine Primary School) or credit card (payment slip sent home

with chocolates).

For each full box sold, and money returned, your family's name will be entered into a weekly prize

draw at assembly each Monday. At the conclusion of the Chocolate Drive there will be a MAJOR

prize draw at assembly on Monday 14th July of

2nd Prize - $100 Myers Voucher

3rd Prize - $100 Myers Voucher
