Welcome to Bloomsbury Language and Linguistics Welcome to the new Language and Linguistics catalogue! For the first time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the Continuum imprint. A big change, but a step forward. I wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum Books in 2011 was a key part of this growth.

We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand.

The values of Continuum which you have appreciated over the years are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but the linguistics team remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality books. We want to publish books that get people talking, that tell a story, and move scholarship onwards. We want to publish books that people love.

Publishing in Print and DigitalBloomsbury leads the way in digital publishing, for example with the launch of the Churchill Archive in September 2012. Providing an essential research and teaching tool, it has made more than 800,000 pages of key historical documents from the twentieth century available online for the first time. We also have Drama Online coming in spring 2013: a comprehensive collection of the most studied, performed and critically acclaimed plays from the last two and half thousand years. Please take a moment to go to www.churchillarchive.com and www.dramaonlinelibrary.com. In due course, we hope to bring this level of digital innovation to the linguistics list.

HighlightsThis new catalogue features great books, new and old. From our core textbook Linguistics: An Introduction (p.3) to brand new books in our cutting-edge semiotics series such as Semiotics of Drink and Drinking (a subject close to our hearts! p.17). We’re launching new editions of Paltridge’s Discourse Analysis (p.7) and Elizabeth Winkler’s Understanding Language (p.3), and announcing An Introduction to Interaction (p.6), a major new conversation analysis textbook. Labov: A Guide for the Perplexed (p.4) and Analyze Anything (p.3) are two new books that come lavished by praise. The proof of course, is in the reading: check the previews, check our blog and most of all, pick up the phone/send me an email.

New WebsiteFinally, it’s great to be able to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information — or email me and I’ll fill you in.

We hope you enjoy reading our latest catalogue and are as pleased with this new cohort of books as we are.

Linguistics: An Introduction

William B. McGregor“The perfect book for beginners!” Eva Eppler, Senior Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, Roehampton University, UK

“William McGregor's new textbook is an excellent introduction to linguistics. It is clear, precise and readable, comprehensible and comprehensive, and it is eminently usable as both a core course text as well as a reference work. It also does not neglect

the extensions and applications of linguistics in the real world. This book is likely to become the benchmark for linguistics texts in the next few years.” Peter Stockwell, Professor of Literary Linguistics, University of Nottingham, UK

“In short, the book is a gem written by a consummate master of the art and discipline of linguistics.” Hilary M. Chappell, Chair Professor in Linguistic Typology of East Asia, Centre de Recherches Linguistiques sur l'Asie Orientale, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France

“The book will make it clear to students what it means to say that linguistics is the science of language.” M. A. K. Halliday, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, University of Sydney, Australia.

WILLIAM B. MCGREGOR is at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities.

Guides for the PerplexedBloomsbury's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

Labov: A Guide for the PerplexedMatthew J. Gordon“Yes, William Labov really did establish a whole new academic field when he was a graduate student. And he has remained at the forefront of that field to this day. Matthew Gordon describes how, why, when and where this happened, and explains with great clarity the importance and excitement of it all. It's a remarkable story, and Gordon has really done it justice.” Peter Trudgill, University of Agder, Norway

Since the publication of The Social Stratification of English in New York City in 1966, Labov has pushed the boundaries of sociolinguistics decade after decade but there has been no one volume guide to his work. This is that guide.

Advanced English GrammarA Linguistic Approach

Ilse Depraetere and Chad Langford“The book is a breath of fresh air. Unlike many grammars, this one has clearly been written by human beings for human beings. It is accessible, elegant and rigorous, and I will recommend it strongly to my students.” Raphael Salkie, Professor of Language Studies, University of Brighton, UK

“This book fills a long-standing gap, as it successfully combines the study of linguistics with

language teaching: it offers an in-depth discussion of central areas of English grammar which are particularly relevant for the language learner, while at the same time providing a clear and up-to-date introduction to essential grammatical concepts and the logical system behind them. All of this is presented in a highly accessible and readable way together with plenty of practical exercises, which makes this book a perfect companion for advanced/upper-intermediate learners of English and students of English linguistics alike.” Gunther Kaltenböck, University of Vienna, Austria

“It will appeal to not only teachers and students of English as a second or foreign language, but also those interested in English grammar and usage from a contemporary linguistic perspective.” Yukio Hirose, Professor, University of Tsukuba, Japan

An advanced English grammar that uses linguistic theory and techniques to elucidate and explain the central, crucial issues.

Bloomsbury DiscourseSeries Editor: Professor Ken Hyland, Director of the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.Discourse is one of the most significant concepts of contemporary thinking in the humanities and social sciences as it concerns the ways language mediates and shapes our interactions with each other and with the social, political and cultural formations of our society. The Bloomsbury Discourse series (formerly Continuum Discourse) aims to capture the fast-developing interest in discourse to provide students, new and experienced teachers and researchers in applied linguistics, ELT and English language with an essential bookshelf. Each book deals with a core topic in discourse studies to give an in-depth, structured and readable introduction to an aspect of the way language is used in real life.

Advances in Instructed Second Language Acquisition ResearchSeries Editor: Professor Alessandro Benati, University of Greenwich, UK.

Editorial board: James F. Lee, University of New South Wales, Australia; Florence Myles, University of Newcastle, UK; Emma Marsden, University of York, UK; María del Pilar García Mayo, Universidad del País Vasco, Spain; Cristina Sanz, Georgetown University, USA; Teresa Cadierno, Syddansk Universitet, Denmark The mission of this series is to publish new theoretical insights in Instructed Second Language Acquisition research that advance our understanding of how languages are learned and should be taught. Research in Instructed Second Language Acquisition has addressed questions related to the degree to which any form of external manipulation (e.g. grammar instruction, input manipulation, etc...) can affect language development. The main purpose of research in instructed second language acquisition is to establish how classroom language learning takes place, and how an understanding of second language acquisition contributes to language teaching.

The Developmental Dimension in Instructed Second Language Learning

Paul A. Malovrh and James F. LeeThis work identifies developmental stages in the acquisition of object pronouns by instructed second language learners of Spanish. It examines learners ranging from beginner to advanced, where the most advanced are themselves teachers of Spanish language courses. Study abroad experience is also a variable in the data.

The book explores language production from a functionalist perspective, examining form-to-function and function-to-form mappings. It provides insights into related developments in production, placement and processing of object pronouns.

PAUL A. MALOVRH is Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina, USA.JAMES F. LEE is Head of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia.

Autonomy and Foreign Language Learning in a Virtual Learning Environment

Miranda HamiltonDigitalised learning with its promise of autonomy, enhanced learner choice, independence and freedom, is an intuitive and appealing construct but closer examination reveals it to be a rather simplistic proposition, raising the following questions.

− What do we mean by autonomy?

− What are we implying about the role of the teacher, the classroom, and interaction between learners?

− What do we understand about the impact of technology on the ecology of the learning environment?

This book describes the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) by a group of advanced English language learners in Mexico, comparing what students thought and what they did in response to the technology.

MIRANDA HAMILTON is a Researcher in Cambridge looking at Learning Orientated Assessment with a focus on the use of technology. She recently completed her PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK.

Applied Linguistics and Materials Development

Edited by Brian TomlinsonFocuses for the first time on materials development and applications of current research and theory for the main areas of applied linguistics (e.g. second language acquisition, pragmatics, vocabulary studies).

Each of its chapters present relevant theories and research conclusions for its area first and then consider practical applications for materials

development. The chapters achieve these applications by reporting and commenting on current theory and research, by analysing the match between current published materials and current theory and by suggesting and exemplifying applications of current theory to materials development.

BRIAN TOMLINSON is a Visiting Professor at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He is Founder and President of MATSDA and has published many articles and books on materials development and on aspects of language teaching and language acquisition.

Young Language Learners' Motivation and AttitudesLongitudinal, comparative and explanatory perspectives

Sybille HeinzmannTaking three different perspectives, this book looks at primary school children's language learning motivation and attitudes to language learning. In adopting a longitudinal perspective, the book fills a research gap and provides a macro-level analysis of motivational development over time. It reveals a surprising amount of stability in primary school children's motivational and attitudinal breakdown.

Transforming Literacies and LanguageMultimodality and Literacy in the New Media Age

Edited by Caroline M. L. Ho, Kate T. Anderson and Alvin P. LeongTechnology-mediated communication cannot help but inform our literacies. This book is a reconceptualisation of the role of language and pedagogy in what Kress (2003) has termed the new media age. At the heart of the volume is the notion of 'transformation' − a change in discourse practices, meaning making, technology and, as a result, literacy acquisition itself.

The chapters look at language as positioned in a hugely multimodal world. Communication extends beyond the traditional realms of discourse, from the collaborative efforts of wikis to the hybrid speech and text of online messaging. These new areas of meaning-making are excellent and extremely important avenues to explore for academics interested in applied linguistics, language and literature, language acquisition and multimodality.

CAROLINE M. HO is Assistant Professor in the English Language and Literature Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. KATE T. ANDERSON is Assistant Professor in the Learning Sciences and Technologies Academic Group and Faculty Researcher in the Learning Sciences Lab at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Understanding Language Classroom ContextsThe Starting Point for Change

Martin Wedell and Angi MalderezA clear understanding of the influence of classroom contexts is the starting point for planning effective change. This book explores and illustrates how what happens in any (language) classroom is influenced by (and can be an influence on) the contexts in which it is situated. The book considers many visible and invisible features of the multiple layers of any context, and provides a framework for understanding

the types of factors that may influence whether changes (planned by a teacher or externally initiated) are likely to be successful.

Teaching Materials and the Roles of EFL/ESL TeachersPractice and TheoryIan McGrath

Since the 1970s, there has been an increase in English language teaching materials. The last 15 years or so have correspondingly seen the publication of books concerned with the evaluation and design of such materials. It is therefore timely to consider what effect the availability of materials and the advice on offer has had on teachers' practice. Are they mediating between materials and learners in the ways advised by methodologists? Are they developing their own materials? This book explores these issues from three perspectives: those of the publisher/textbook writer, the specialist methodologist writing in the field, and that of the teachers themselves. At the heart of the book are the assumptions about the roles of EFL/ESL teachers, compared with their actual practices. The attitudes, knowledge and competencies needed to fill these roles are also discussed. This long overdue book will appeal to MA students in ELT and TESOL, especially those looking at material design, as well as researchers and practitioners in the area.

Discourse of Text MessagingAnalysis of SMS Communication

Caroline Tagg“The Discourse of Text Messaging is a pleasure to read. A detailed analysis of a corpus of text messages reveals how people deploy all the resources of language − from spellings and punctuation through to grammar and discourse markers − to create meanings, to construct identities and to generally ‘get things done'. The wide-ranging analyses are clearly explained and engagingly written about throughout.” David

Barton, Professor of Language and Literacy, Lancaster University, UK

“Through a meticulous investigation of a rich corpus of authentic text messages, Tagg's The Discourse of Text Messaging is by far the most comprehensive book-length study of mobile phone texting from a linguistics perspective. A must-read for anyone interested in digital discourse and communication in the mobile world.” Carmen Lee, Department of English, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Understanding the discourse of text messaging has profound implications for society. SMS text messaging has impacted considerably on how we communicate with others. Negative, sometimes alarmist media coverage continues to fuel debate surrounding its 'damaging' effects on language and literacy, yet these portrayals tend to be based on extreme or fictionalised accounts of text messaging. What kind of language do people really use when they text?

Drawing on a range of academic sources from various fields, this book describes the language used in a corpus of over 11,000 text messages, as yet the largest collection in the UK. In particular, the book shows how the discourse of text messaging is shaped by users' often creative responses to the functions and constraints of the medium.

CAROLINE TAGG is Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the Centre for English Language Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War

Angela SmithUsing extensive data − mostly gleaned from the National Archives − this book examines the way in which British widows of servicemen who died in the First World War were represented in society and by themselves, exploring the intertwining discourses of social welfare, national identity, and morality that can be identified in these texts.

Tacit Knowledge and Spoken DiscourseMichele ZappavignaProfessional Linguistics is an emergent area of study within applied linguistics, using discourse analysis to assist people working in professional domains. This book examines tacit knowledge − that expertise that is considered to be lost when skilled practitioners leave an institution. Traditionally it has been argued that some aspects practical knowledge cannot be articulated. However, the premise of Polyani's theory of Tacit Knowing (“we know more than we can tell”)

does not account for latent patterns that linguists can uncover in spoken language. Understanding these discourse patterns provides a way to explore the assumptions people invoke, but do not make explicit in their work and working relationships.

A Critical Hypertext Analysis of Social MediaThe True Colours of Facebook

Volker EisenlauerFacebook, in just a few years, has become one of the central tools people use to communicate with each other in everyday life. However, the perceived freedom of action on the site and the actual processes that are permitted in Facebook's set up don't always match up: in this book this gap is examined.

This book identifies the interrelations between user text actions and the software environment framing them. It takes a critical perspective on Facebook and develops a model that grants methodological access to complex interlaced practices incorporating media, text and literacies.

Drama and IdentityMonika Bednarek“Monika Bednarek's careful quantitative eye looks around unusual corners for a corpus linguist. Her book The Language of Fictional Television offers a distinctive, linguistic approach to analysing popular culture, but draws productively on stylistics, cultural studies, media studies and sociological frameworks. This book provides a model for linguists who want to combine corpus evidence with ‘big picture’ questions, like how

characterisation and identity works, and how ideologies are naturalized − and might be challenged − both in and out of fiction. The material can be adapted for teaching materials in senior undergraduate and postgraduate classes: for example, the chapter on how vegetarians and vegetarian foods are construed, and how this is involved in character development in the ‘dramedy’ Gilmore Girls, makes an excellent platform for teaching language and ideology.” Alison Moore, Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, University of Wollongong & Honorary Research Associate, Centre for Language in Social Life, Macquarie University, Australia

Studies of Laughter in InteractionEdited by Phillip Glenn and Elizabeth HoltLaughter is pervasive in interaction yet often overlooked in the research. This volume presents a collection of original studies revealing the highly-ordered, complex, and important phenomenon of laughter in everyday interactions. Building on 40 years of conversation analytic research, the authors show how the design and placement of laughs contribute to unfolding sequences, social activities, identities, and relationships. In this revealing study

leading experts investigate laughter in a range of different contexts and across a variety of languages. The research demonstrates that laughter is not simply a reaction to humour but is used in a fascinating array of different ways. Findings reported here include its use in clinics, employment interviews, news interviews, classrooms, the discourse of children with severe autism, and ordinary conversations. The acoustics of laughter and its relationship to movement, gaze and gesture are also explored. The volume brings together new and influential research into this phenomenon to present the state-of-the-art.

Globalization, Communication and the WorkplaceTalking Across The World

Edited by Gail Forey and Jane LockwoodThe global developments in Information Technology Enabled Services have transformed customer service encounters which were until recently face-to-face. The major business areas of healthcare, insurance, banking and media are increasingly moving their customer processes to call centres, web based interaction, and email. ITES is set for explosive growth over the next decade, alongside being increasingly outsourced to non-English speaking

destinations. The need for good English language communication skills is becoming ever more acute. This book looks closely at interactive communication in customer-facing services, featuring the voices of both academics and those in industry. It aims to integrate the work of applied linguists, teachers, trainers and businesses.

Language of the Third ReichLTI: Lingua Tertii Imperii

Victor Klemperer“It is obscene, in a sense, to relate Klemperer's situation to any subsequent intellectual enquiry conducted unmolested by tyranny. But studies of language − whether social, political or aesthetic − owe him a debt. They implicitly gesture towards his act of witness, and towards others like it.” Times Higher Education

“This book is a breathtaking balancing act, by turns horrifying and heroic, saddening and sardonic of major historical importance and grippingly well-written” The International Journal of Applied Linguistics

“This important, stimulating and necessary book should be required reading for all who want to understand what politicians are doing to us today ... it is full of anecdotes and details that illustrate the effect of the changes in language ... This is a vital book.” Eric Hester, Catholic Times

“On the basis of his painstaking ethical-linguistic examinations, Klemperer is one of the most valuable witnesses to the methods of totalitarian mental corruption. The lasting message of this book is one of constant vigilance: wherever the machinery of atrocity is in motion, the misuse of language will be supporting it.” Times Higher Education

This brilliant book is by turns entertaining and profound, saddening and horrifying. It is deservedly one of the great twentieth-century studies of language and its engagement with history.

Translated by Dr Martin Brady.

VICTOR LEMPERER a front-line veteran of the First World War, became Professor of French Literature at Dresden University, Germany. He was taken from his university in 1935 because he was Jewish, and only survived because of his marriage to an Aryan.

The Anthropology of WritingUnderstanding Textually Mediated Worlds

Edited by David Barton and Uta Papen“An invigorating collection. With fresh terminology and fascinating cross-cultural perspectives, this book takes contemporary literacy studies to a higher plane. Its timing couldn't be better.” Professor Deborah Brandt, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, author of Literacy in American Lives

We live in a textually-mediated world where writing is central to society, its cultural practices and

institutions. Writing has been the subject of much research but it is usually highly visible and valued texts that are studied − the work of novelists, poets and scholars. The studies included in this book examine every day acts of writing and their significance. Ordinary quotidian writing may be viewed as mundane and routine, but it is central to how societies operate and the ways individuals relate to each other and to institutions. Examples discussed in the book including writing in areas such as farming, photo-sharing, childcare work and health care.

Advances in SociolinguisticsSeries Editor: Tommaso M. Milani, Associate Professor, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.Since the emergence of sociolinguistics as a new field of enquiry in the late 1960s, research into the relationship between language and society has advanced almost beyond recognition. In particular, the past decade has witnessed the considerable influence of theories drawn from outside of sociolinguistics itself. Thus rather than see language as a mere reflection of society, recent work has been increasingly inspired by ideas drawn from social, cultural, and political theory that have emphasised the constitutive role played by language/discourse in all areas of social life. The Advances in Sociolinguistics series seeks to provide a snapshot of the current diversity of the field of sociolinguistics and the blurring of the boundaries between sociolinguistics and other domains of study concerned with the role of language in society.

Language Ideologies and the Globalization of 'Standard' Spanish

Darren Paffey“Paffey's book is an impressive account to what extent the Spanish Language Academy frames not only the public ideological debates about Spanish as a language, but also the standardisation efforts occurring in the Spanish speaking world.” Rainer Enrique, Hamel Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico

This book examines how language ideologies are manifested in newspaper media. Using the Spanish press as a case study it considers how media discourse both from and about the Real Academia Española constitutes a set of ‘language ideological debates' in which the institution represents a vision of what the Spanish language is and what it should be like.

Paffey adopts a critical discourse analysis approach to a large corpus of texts from Spain's best-selling daily newspapers, El País and ABC. More generally, the book sheds light on how institutions produce and maintain visions of ‘standard language' in the contemporary context. A global language, such as Spanish, is by nature more widely used outside of the nation state in question than in it.

The book covers recent research on language ideologies, standardization and CDA and considers the application of these to three core discursive themes: language unity and a concept of a ‘panhispanic' speech community; the RAE's construction of its authority; and institutional ideologies and management of language on a global scale.

DARREN PAFFEY is a Lecturer in Spanish and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, UK.

Bloomsbury Advances in SemioticsSeries Editor: Paul Bouissac, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Canada.Bloomsbury Advances in Semiotics publishes original works in the field demonstrating robust scholarship, intellectual creativity, and clarity of exposition. These works apply semiotic approaches to linguistics and non-verbal productions, social institutions and discourses, embodied cognition and communication, and the new virtual realities that have been ushered in by the Internet. It also is inclusive of publications in relevant domains such as socio-semiotics, evolutionary semiotics, game theory, cultural and literary studies, human-computer interactions, and the challenging new dimensions of human networking afforded by social websites.

Semiotics of ReligionSigns of the Sacred in History

Robert A. Yelle“This book is vast in scope, deep in implications, and admirably clear and forthright in exposition. The study of religion has needed a work of this kind, which brings together several research traditions and pushes the resulting synthesis in new directions. The result is an agenda-setting project of huge ambition.” Webb Keane, Professor of Anthropology, University of Michigan, USA.

Following the heyday of Lévi-Straussian structuralism in the 1970s-80s, little attention has been paid by scholars of religion to semiotics. Semiotics of Religion reassesses key semiotic theories in the light of religious data. Yelle examines the semiotics of religion from structural and historical perspectives, drawing on Peircean linguistic anthropology, Jakobsonian poetics, comparative religion and several theological traditions.

Introduction to Peircean Visual SemioticsTony JappyContemporary culture is as much visual as literary. This book explores an approach to the communicative power of the pictorial and multimodal documents that make up this visual culture, using Peircean semiotics. It develops the enormous theoretical potential of Peirce's theory of signs of signs (semiotics) and the persuasive strategies in which they are employed (visual rhetoric) in a variety of documents.

A Buddhist Theory of SemioticsSigns, Ontology, and Salvation in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism

Fabio RambelliOne of the first attempts ever to present in a systematic way a non-western semiotic system. This book looks at Japanese esoteric Buddhism and is based around original texts, informed by explicit and rigorous semiotic categories.

This book discusses in depth the main elements of Buddhist semiotics as based primarily on original Japanese pre-modern sources. It is a crucial

publication in the fields of semiotics and religious studies.

Circus as Multimodal DiscoursePerformance, Meaning, and Ritual

Paul BouissacThis volume presents a theory of the circus as a secular ritual and introduces a method to analyse its performances as multimodal discourse. The book's twelve chapters cover the range of circus specialties (magic, domestic and wild animal training, acrobatics, and clowning) and provide examples to show how cultural meaning is produced, extended and amplified by circus performances.

It concludes with a reflection on the potentially subversive power of this discourse and its contemporary use by activists.

The Stylistics of PoetryContext, cognition, discourse, history

Peter Verdonk“Every stylistics undergraduate student should read this book, as there is no better model than Verdonk’s to show them how to conduct a sophisticated, erudite and poignant stylistic analysis of poetry. In a clear and informative fashion Verdonk takes you by the hand and shows you the wonders of how literary meaning can be uncovered by means of impeccable linguistic analysis.” Professor Michael Burke, UC Roosevelt Academic, Utrecht University

This is a collection of Professor Peter Verdonk's most important work on the stylistics of poetry. It begins with a brand new introduction by the series editor Dan McIntyre retrospectively analysing key themes in the work. Gathering articles published across a wide variety of locations into one complete collection, it arrives at a career-long perspective on the development of the stylistics of poetry. Looking at Auden, Heaney and Larkin amongst others it is framed by an opening introduction to poetic artifice and literary stylistics, and a concluding retrospective of Verdonk's work.

PETER VERDONK is Emeritus Professor of Stylistics, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Advances in StylisticsSeries Editor: Dan McIntyre, University of Huddersfield, UK.Advances in Stylistics provides student resources and research material in cutting-edge stylistics. It forgoes traditional boundaries to encompass the study of both literary and non-literary texts, and covers exciting new developments in the field. It takes a broad view of stylistics as the practice of using linguistic methodologies and analytical frameworks to facilitate the analysis of texts of all genres and types, for the purpose of explaining why we interpret texts in the way that we do.

Books in the series address such topics as stylistic theory, discourse analysis, language and cognition, literary genre, corpus stylistics, the analysis of historical texts, pedagogical stylistics, multimodality and stylistic methodologies.

The series further develops stylistic and linguistic theory, to demonstrate the application and value of stylistic tools of analysis and further consolidate stylistics as a major study and research area within language studies.

Style in the RenaissanceLanguage and Ideology in Early Modern England

Patricia Canning“Patricia Canning’s adventurous interdisciplinary study brings together in new and exciting ways the two fields of linguistics and literary criticism in her examination of selected texts by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The range and detail of her analysis, evident especially in her microscopic examination of linguistic forms, cultural assumptions, and histoirical contexts in plays by Shakespeare and Middleton, and in the

poetry of George Crashaw, is impressive. Here is a rare combination of strenuous scholarly rigour, and uncompromising analysis, replete with a full and clear awareness of what interdisciplinarity involves. A welcome new voice offering unique insights into texts that we thought we knew.” Professor John Drakakis,University of Stirling, UK

I. A. Richards and the Rise of Cognitive Stylistics

David WestI. A. Richards is an influential figure in literary criticism but has rarely been thought of as someone who laid the foundations for cognitive stylistics. This book proposes that Richards was a "protocognitivist".

West argues that Richards anticipated many of the discipline's core aims, methods and assumptions. The book argues that the roots of cognitive psychology lie in early twentieth century psychology, when

there was a focus on cognitive processes such as memory and learning, attention, categorisation, perception and consciousness. It was this cognitive psychology that Richards drew upon to build a theory of literature and interpretation − which in itself prefigured cognitive stylistics.

DAVID WEST is a Lecturer in English Language, Linguistics and Literature at the University of Münster, Germany.

Oppositions and Ideology in News Discourse

Matt Davies“Matt Davies’ book is an excellent contribution towards research on the function and structure of constructed oppositions in ideological texts. Davies’ framework adeptly shows how constructed opposites can be identified and classified, using case studies to demonstrate that oppositions are often used in complex and subtle ways that may not be detected by readers.” Paul Baker, Lancaster University, UK

Constructed opposition has proved as viable an area of research as traditional antonymy, and a useful tool in looking at ideologically orientated texts. This book investigates how binary oppositions are constructed discursively and the potential ideological repercussions of their usage in news reports in the British press.

Chick LitThe Stylistics of Cappuccino Fiction

Rocío MontoroIn recent times, Chick Lit has risen to a certain level of prominence. This is the first book length study that looks into the distinctive features of this much-discussed genre. Chick Lit is examined in relation to its linguistic peculiarities and their role as far as narrative, sociological and feminist issues are concerned, amongst others. Montoro's stylistics includes a cognitive slant that highlights futher readerly aspects of the texts. The approach

illuminates how the genre works, and how it is set apart from others. In this respect, the stylistics of chick lit is understood in its contect of production and reception. Montoro evaluates reading processes and investigates readers' responsive attitude to the genre.

Corpus and DiscourseSeries Editors: Wolfgang Teubert, University of Birmingham, UK, and Michaela Mahlberg, University of Nottingham, UK.

Editorial Board: Paul Baker (Lancaster), Frantisek Cermák (Prague), Susan Conrad (Portland), Geoffrey Leech (Lancaster), Dominique Maingueneau (Paris XII), Christian Mair (Freiburg), Alan Partington (Bologna), Elena Tognini-Bonelli (Siena and TWC), Ruth Wodak (Lancaster), Feng Zhiwei (Beijing).Corpus linguistics provides the methodology to extract meaning from discourse. Taking as its starting point the fact that language is not a mirror of reality but lets us share what we know, believe and think about reality, it focuses on language as a social phenomenon, and makes visible the attitudes and beliefs expressed by the members of a discourse community.

Consisting of both spoken and written language, discourse always has historical, social, functional, and regional dimensions. Discourse can be monolingual or multilingual, interconnected by translations. Discourse is where language and social studies meet.

The Corpus and Discourse series consists of two strands. The first, Research in Corpus and Discourse, features innovative contributions to various aspects of corpus linguistics and a wide range of applications, from language technology via the teaching of a second language to a history of mentalities. The second strand, Studies in Corpus and Discourse, is comprised of key texts bridging the gap between social studies and linguistics. Although equally academically rigorous, this strand will be aimed at a wider audience of academics and postgraduate students working in both disciplines.

The Web As CorpusTheory and Practice

Maristella GattoIs the internet a suitable linguistic corpus? How can we use it in corpus techniques? What are the special properties that we need to be aware of?

This book answers those questions.

The Web is an exponentially increasing source of language and corpus linguistics data. From user-generated Web 2.0 content to gigantic static information resources, the breadth and depth of

information available is breathtaking − and bewildering. This book explores the theory and practice of "web as corpus". It looks at the most common tools and methods used and features a plethora of examples based on the author's own teaching experience. This book also bridges the gap between studies in computational linguistics, which emphasise technical aspects, and studies in corpus linguistics, which focus on the implications for language theory and use.

Investigating Adolescent Health CommunicationA Corpus Linguistics Approach

Kevin HarveyA comprehensive corpus analysis of adolescent health communication is long overdue − and this book provides it. We know comparatively little about the language adolescents use to articulate their health concerns, and linguistic analysis of their choices can shed light on their attitudes towards and beliefs about health and illness.

This book interrogates a two million word corpus of messages posted by adolescents to an online health forum. It adopts a mixed method corpus approach to health communication, combining both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Analysis in this way gives voice to an age group whose subjective experiences of illness have often been marginalised or simply overlooked in favour of the concerns of older populations.

The Collected Works of M.A.K. HallidayThe Collected Works of M. A. K. Halliday is a series that brings together Halliday’s publications in many branches of linguistics, both theoretical and applied (a distinction which he himself rejects), including grammar and semantics, discourse analysis and stylistics, phonology, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, language education, and child language development.

“A major enterprise comparable to a grand retrospective of the paintings of some prominent artist of a distinctive school.”(on the Collected Works of M.A.K. Halliday series) Roy Harris

Interviews with M. A. K. HallidayLanguage Turned Back on Himself

Edited by J. R. MartinA collection of interviews with M. A. K. Halliday, the founder of systemic-functional linguistics, is long overdue. Halliday's unique standing in SFL is documented by the many interviews and discussions with him that have been published in both print and digital media over the past forty years. This volume brings these together for the first time, document Halliday's personal perspective on the evolution of SFL theory and its many applications. Several of

these accounts are now rare or unavailable and the book gives readers the chance to experience Halliday's always illuminating and enquiring approach to language.

The book consists of six major interviews with Halliday, arranged chronologically and with some additional material. An introduction provides relevant contextual information. There is a new, previously unpublished interview with Professor Halliday.

J. R. MARTIN is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney, Australia.

Semiotic MarginsMeaning in Multimodalities

Edited by Shoshana Dreyfus, Susan Hood and Maree StenglinSemiotic Margins analyses the meaning making potential of not only language, but modalities like laughter, music, colour, and architectural spaces. By examining resources often positioned on the side-line of mainstream semiotic accounts, this study raises the question of what counts as part of language and communication and why.

DisciplinarityFunctional Linguistic and Sociological Perspectives

Edited by Frances Christie and Karl Maton“A timely and challenging text that brings together cutting edge thinking on disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity by leading social realist scholars and work on functional linguistics inspired by Halliday and Hasan.” John Beck, Director of Studies in Education, Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, UK

Disciplinary knowledge is under threat in the modern world. Claims abound that we are entering a landscape in which the division of disciplines is obsolete, implying a commitment to outdated values in scholarship. Notions of ‘discipline' are critiqued as reflecting social power and representing the worldview of dominant social groups. By addressing and challenging such claims, this edited collection argues that proclamations of the death of disciplines have been greatly overstated.

A Grammar of Spoken English DiscourseThe Intonation of Increments

Gerard O'Grady“Taking David Brazil’s ground-breaking work on the grammar of speech as a starting point, O’Grady makes an important contribution to the analysis of unfolding real-time language. He assesses the strengths and weaknesses of Brazil’s grammar and goes on to offer a developed version, using evidence from a corpus of read aloud speech. Perhaps his main contribution is

in placing intonation more centrally in the description. His work will be of relevance to all whose interests are in understanding speech as process rather than product and the role of intonation in discourse.” Martin Hewings, Honorary Senior Research Fellow, School of English, Drama and American and Canadian Studies, University of Birmingham, UK

The Syntax of Mauritian CreoleAnand SyeaCreole languages have in recent years become a valuable source of data for current theories of syntax and theories of child/adult language acquisition. However, grammars of these languages, particularly those couched within theoretical frameworks of one kind of another, are few and far between.

This book contributes directly to creole linguistics by providing a detailed study of different aspects of the syntax of Mauritian creole within the theoretical framework of Principles and Parameters (Chomsky, 1981) and Minimalism (1995).

The Semantic Representation of Natural Language

Michael Levison, Greg Lessard, Craig Thomas and Matthew DonaldCould a single semantic formalism be created which would allow for the representation of meaning at all levels from basic semantic units and relations to sentence-level and text-level meaning, while remaining practical and user-friendly? This book showcases a detailed, precise and clear semantic formalism such that representations of meaning can be created and understood by a wide range

of users, including logicians, linguists, creative writers, and literary specialists without detailed technical knowledge.

Structural Ambiguity in EnglishAn Applied Grammatical InventoryDallin D. OaksStructural Ambiguity in English is a major new scholarly work that provides an innovative and accessible linguistic description of those features of the language that can be exploited to generate structural ambiguities. Most ambiguity scholarship is concerned with disambiguation − the process of making what is ambiguous clear. This book takes

the opposite approach as it focuses on describing the features in the English language that may contribute towards the creation of structural ambiguities, which form the core of some of the best word-plays found in advertising, comedy and marketing. Oaks utilises a systematic and comprehensive inventory approach that identifies individual elements in the language and their distinctive behaviours that can be manipulated in the deliberate creation of structural ambiguities. In doing so he also provides authentic examples to illustrate the concepts he presents.

Bloomsbury Studies in TranslationSeries Editor: Jeremy Munday, Senior Lecturer at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Leeds, UK.Published in association with the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS), Bloomsbury Studies in Translation aims to present a series of books focused around central issues in translation and interpreting. Using case studies drawn from a wide range of different countries and languages, each book presents a comprehensive examination of current areas of research within translation studies written by academics at the forefront of the field. The thought-provoking books in this series are aimed at advanced students and researchers of translation studies.

Self-TranslationBrokering Originality in Hybrid Culture

Edited by Anthony CordingleySelf-Translation provides critical, historical and interdisciplinary analyses of self-translators and their works. It investigates the challenges which the bilingual oeuvre and the experience of the self-translator pose to conventional definitions of translation and the problematic dichotomies of “original” and “translation”, “author” and "translator". Canonical self-translators, such Samuel Beckett, Vladimir Nabokov and Rabindranath

Tagore, are here discussed in the context of previously overlooked self-translators, from Japan to South Africa, from the Basque Country to Scotland. This book seeks therefore to offer a portrait of the diverse artistic and political objectives and priorities of self-translators by investigating different cosmopolitan, post-colonial and indigenous practices. Numerous contributions to this volume extend the scope of self-translation to include the composition of a work out of a multilingual consciousness or society. They demonstrate how production within hybrid contexts requires the negotiation of different languages within the self, generating powerful experiences, from crisis to liberation, and texts that offer key insights into our increasingly globalized culture.

ANTHONY CORDINGLEY is Lecturer in Translation at the Université de Paris 8, France.

Cognitive Explorations of Translation Edited by Sharon O'Brien“Trainers of translators tend to know what a good translation is. This knowledge results from their teaching experience and their knowledge of the professional market, but not always from empirical research. The contributors to this volume help to change that state of affairs: they make use of various methods (think aloud protocols, keylogging, eyetracking and cued retrospection) and their results are of great interest to those in practical and theoretical translation studies.” Paul Kussmaul, Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Mainz, Germany

Words, Images and Performances in Translation

Edited by Rita Wilson and Brigid Maher“This collection comprises a lucid and engaging discussion of all the ways translators may (or perhaps necessarily must) ‘nudge’, ‘tickle’ or even ‘sabotage’ a source text. Wilson and Maher have brought together a diverse group of researchers who each creatively challenge the dominion of the original, question the directionality of global cultural flows, and above all highlight the many

complexities to be negotiated. Translation, rightly conceived of as a means of both underscoring and eliding difference, is presented here as a form of mediation that serves a deep hermeneutic purpose while offering scope for ‘play’, ‘replay’ and ‘interplay’. The notion of text is helpfully given the broadest possible definition: with examples drawn from print ads to football to theatrical performance, these essays delve insightfully into the international circulation of various cultural products. A worthy addition to the Translation Studies library.” Valerie Henitiuk, University of East Anglia, UK

Bloomsbury Advances in TranslationSeries Editor: Jeremy Munday, Senior Lecturer at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Leeds, UK.Bloomsbury Advances in Translation publishes cutting-edge research in the fields of translation studies. This field has grown in importance in the modern, globalized world, with international translation between languages a daily occurrence. Research into the practices, processes and theory of translation is essential and this series aims to showcase the best in international academic and professional output.

Quality In Professional TranslationAssessment and Improvement

Joanna DruganHow do translation companies, multilingual international organisations and individual translators measure and improve the quality of their translations? This book reports on the range of approaches to quality assurance across the translation industry, from Norway to China, from the individual freelance working in a home office to the largest translation supplier in the world. Best practice is outlined for a range of translation

scenarios, enabling readers to learn from others' experience – and mistakes. The author also draws on over a decade's experience to outline the potential to improve quality by exploiting modern technological support tools such as translation memory software.

New and experienced translators will gain understanding of what employers expect (and reward); translation companies can learn how their peers and rivals manage this sensitive area of their work; clients will find out what levels of quality they can expect; and academics are provided with an illuminating insight into how quality is assessed and guaranteed in the profession today.

Translation and Translation Studies in the Japanese Context

Edited by Nana Sato-Rossberg and Judy WakabayashiJapan is often regarded as a ‘culture of translation'. Oral and written translation has played a vital role in Japan over the centuries and led to a body of thinking and research rooted in a context about which little information has been available outside of Japan in the past.

The chapters examine the current state of translation studies as an academic discipline in Japan and a range of historical aspects (e.g., translation of Chinese vernacular novels in early modern times, the role of translation in Japan's modernization, changes in stylistic norms in Meiji-period translations, ‘thick translation' of indigenous Ainu place names), as well as creative aspects of translation in modern and postwar Japan. Other chapters explore contemporary phenomena such as the intralingual translation of Japanese expressions embedded in English texts emanating from diasporic contexts, the practice of pre-translation or writing for an international audience from the outset, the innovative practice of reverse localization of Japanese video games back into Japanese, and community interpreting practices and research.

The Pragmatic TranslatorAn Integral Theory of Translation

Massimiliano MoriniThis book is concerned with translation theory. It proposes an all-round view of translation in the terms of modern pragmatics, as articulated in three pragmatic functions (performative, interpersonal and locative) which describe how translated texts function in the world, involve readers and are rooted in their spatio-temporal contexts. It presents a full and up to date view of translation that takes into

account thirty years of research in the field of Descriptive Translation Studies. Unlike DTS, the theory provides an account of products and processes. This publication exhibits the need for and usefulness of such a theory, and will be essential reading for scholars involved in translation and interpreting studies.

Music, Text and TranslationEdited by Helen Julia MinorsExpanding the notion of translation, this book specifically focuses on the transferences between music and text. The concept of ‘translation' is often limited solely to language transfer. It is, however, a process occurring within and around most forms of artistic expression. Music, considered a language in its own right, often refers to text discourse and other art forms. In translation, this referential relationship must be translated too. How is music

affected by text translation? How does music influence the translation of the text it sets? How is the sense of both the text and the music transferred in the translation process? Combining theory with practice, the book questions the process and role translation has to play in a musical context. It provides a range of case studies across interdisciplinary fields. It is the first collection on music in translation that is not restricted to one discipline, including explorations of opera libretti, surtitling, art song, musicals, poetry, painting, sculpture and biography, alongside looking at issues of accessibility.

Defining the Role of Community Interpreters

The Concept of Role-SpacePeter Llewellyn-Jones and Robert G. LeeBeginning with an overview of the research into human communication dynamics, this book explores the impact of introducing an interpreter into a complex and sometimes sensitive interactive setting.

Traditionally interpreters have been taught that they should not influence the communication process and, to minimise their impact, they should maintain an

impersonal, professional distance. They should not interact with the interlocutors other than to interpret the meaning of their utterances; these behaviours are reinforced by the Codes of Practice adopted by many of the national interpreting organisations. These traditional behaviours often hinder rather than facilitate communication between interlocutors who don't share a common language.

The book looks at three dimensions of interactions: the axes of presentation of ‘self’, interaction management and conversational alignment.

It demonstrates, with real-world examples, how different interpreting scenarios require the interpreter to play very different roles. It is the variations along these different axes that create ‘role-space’, a term used to denote the parameters that inform the interpreter's behaviour.

PETER LLEWELLYN-JONES was, from 2003-2012, Senior Teaching Fellow and Programme Director for the MA Interpreting: BSL-English at the Centre for Translation Studies, University of Leeds, UK. Global Trends in Translator and Interpreter Training

Mediation and CultureEdited by Séverine Hubscher-Davidson and Michał Borodo“Stimulating reading! This innovative and thought-provoking collection of articles, by authors with their finger on the pulse of recent translator and interpreter training trends, tackles salient issues, addressing fundamental questions through well-informed studies in the field.” Catherine Way,

Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, University of Granada, Spain

“This volume offers a fascinating view of the rich tapestry that is contemporary translator education. The studies covered move from micro-level investigations of students' translation strategies to macro-level interrogations of the ideologies that inform translation curricula. Drawing on educational, technological and ideological approaches, amongst others, it presents a picture of an area in flux, where trans-national standardisation and local exigencies come up against each other, and received wisdom is − or should be − constantly questioned.” Dr Dorothy Kenny, School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, Dublin City University, Ireland

“In an increasingly globalized but also splintered world, translator training is absolutely vital … It comprises chapters by a selection of international authors which offer practically-oriented proposals firmly grounded in state-of-the-art IT technologies, in rapidly changing needs and expectations of young translation adepts and in burgeoning 21st-century translation theory, to embrace such issues as intercultural communication, greater empowerment of translators and their increasingly exacting ethical commitments. Any teacher or student engaged in academic translator training programmes would be well advised to read this book.” Professor Wojciech Kubinski, Faculty of Languages, University of Gdansk, Poland

This book looks at translator and interpreter training, focusing on mediation and culture in a global context.

SÉVERINE HUBSCHER-DAVIDSON is lecturer in Translation Studies in the School of Languages and Social Sciences, Aston University, UK. MICHAŁ BORODO is Assistant Professor in the Institute of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics at Kazimierz Wielki University, Poland.
