President/CEO’s MessageCAP COM produced the first issues of the Lines of Communication newsletter in 1985. That was about the same time that the Credit Union began offering Home Equity Loans and ATM “Connection Cards.” Today, we are debuting a new newsletter format while still delivering the best Home Equity Loans and a great VISA® Debit Card that can be used at the ATM or checkout. As we celebrate 60 years of service and look back on our history, one

thing stands out: Our commitment to delivering unmatched customer service. You can see that in the words of Tamara Marziani, the young woman featured on our cover who grew up near our Cohoes Branch and now lives in Clifton Park. Tamara tells us: “CAP COM’s Mortgage Experts were fast and knowledgeable. They made it easy.” That neighborly service is delivered by experts working in all departments at CAP COM. Take our Car Buying Experts for example − they’re always ready to do it all for you! They will be answering questions at our Main Office on Saturday, April 20 during our spring Used Car Sale. Join us and find more than 150 cars and trucks on site at pre-negotiated prices. It’s the perfect place to find a great deal.

The Car Sale is one of many exciting Credit Union events. You’ll find a list of upcoming educational workshops on Page 5, including College Bound workshops featuring admissions expert Dr. Dean Skarlis. CAP COM has been helping families at every stage of life for six decades. And college planning and Car Buying Experts are just a piece of all the things we do. Find out how CAP COM can make a difference in your life! Visit any branch or call us at (518) 458-2195 today.

Abuse can involve any Credit Union employee, volunteer or member. Should an abusive action occur on Credit Union property, the Credit Union may suspend the services of any party involved. As defined by the Credit Union Board of Directors, abuse includes but is not limited to: physical abuse, verbal abuse, harassment, physical damage to Credit Union property, or physical damage to the property of an employee or volunteer. In addition, if a member causes a financial loss or is knowingly involved in a fraudulent or otherwise illegal transaction, the Credit Union retains the right to suspend services. Should any action be taken, written correspondence will be sent to the individual’s address of record.

Membership Notification of Abuse and Action

Don’t abandon your cashDid you know that an account with no activity for three years becomes the property of New York State? If you have an account with no activity be sure to reclaim it before it becomes abandoned property! CAP COM will be contacting members with accounts that meet the state’s requirement for abandoned property in July. We will also be contacting members with bank checks that have not been cashed in three years, as there are specific requirements for replacing the check. If you are not sure of the status of your CAP COM account, contact an Associate at (518) 458-2195 or (800) 468-5500, or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Here are some tips to keep your account from becoming abandoned property. • Keep your accounts active. More than half of unclaimed accounts are dormant Savings Accounts

that have had no activity for three years. Make small deposits or withdrawals every year to keep your account active. Please note: If an automatic debit or credit is the only activity on your account, it will still be considered dormant. • Take another look at your account. Also, check out the convenient products and services CAP COM offers to help make banking easy! • Keep accurate records. Record all bank accounts, stock certificates, insurance policies, utility and rent deposits. • Leave an address. Notify all financial institutions when you move. • Let someone know. Tell a family member, trusted friend or advisor where you store your records. • Cash checks promptly. Make sure you cash all checks for utility deposits, dividends, insurance, wages and any other refund you receive as soon as you can.

CAP COM helps to protect members from identity theft with a combination of safeguards such as employee training, strict privacy policies, and rigorous security standards. But, you can do more to stay safe.

Tips for staying safe • Shred financial statements and sensitive information. Criminals can get canceled checks, deposit receipts or bank statements from dumpsters or trash bins.

• Be aware of missing mail such as account statements and bills. Consider using eStatements and eNotices for improved safety and faster statement delivery.

• Review your accounts regularly for unauthorized charges. Also, monitor your credit regularly.

• When doing business online, use firewalls, anti-spyware, antivirus software and a secure browser. Never respond to unsolicited requests for personal information.

• Never download from, open attachments or click on a web link in an e-mail from an unfamiliar source.

• Protect web passwords by using letters and numbers. Change passwords often and avoid automatic log-in features.

Plan ahead and avoid the ‘crash course’

A recent story in The Wall Street Journal headlined “College Planning: A Crash Course on Paying the Bill” provided valuable tips on subjects ranging from scholarships to comparing college award letters. But according to the College Experts at our College Bound Program, the story also revealed a common mistake: Many families start college planning too late. “Starting early helps families make smart choices when it comes time to choose a college and build a smart financing plan,” said Kim Donah, a Certified College Planning Specialist at CAP COM. The Journal story cited Student Aid Services in reporting that there is more than $236 billion in student aid, such as loans, scholarships and grants available each year. Students receive an average of $13,218 per year in

grants and loans. Our College Bound experts recommend that students start researching scholarships at the start of high school. Some great websites to start with include: www.fastweb.com and www.finaid.org. Also, local libraries and high school guidance offices may have information about state-sponsored aid programs and scholarships sponsored by local organizations such as CAP COM. In addition, www.fafsa.ed.gov provides an overview of federal student aid programs, including Pell Grants, campus-based aid programs, Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans and others. Getting high school students involved in the college process during their sophomore and junior years could be a pivotal lesson in responsibility that leads to success.

Saving is a smart move at any age

March-April 2013 | 7

Many American families are living on the edge. More than 40 percent of U.S. households have almost no savings to fall back on after a job loss, health crisis or other income-depleting emergency, according to a recent study released by the Corporation for Enterprise Development. CAP COM is working to help families and counteract these trends. Our savings tools such as special certificates and club accounts help families build savings. CAP COM’s School Banking Program is teaching kids at more than 70 local schools to save by making deposits at school. “Saving is something we all work at. The lessons our School Banking kids are learning by making deposits at school can help almost any family build

a more economically secure future,” said Manager of Educational Initiatives Nicolle Monast. Families can secure a child’s savings in a CertifiKID.* Your child’s money will grow faster than in a regular Savings Account and you can add money regularly with payroll deductions. What’s more, there is no minimum balance to get started. Save automatically with payroll deductions and make withdrawals at any time without penalty with Special Club Accounts. With popular options like our Holiday Club Accounts, you can keep a balance of just $100 to earn dividends. Grow your money over time with a Certificate. If you are saving for long-term goals, then a Certificate is just what you’re looking for. What’s

more, our 21-Month Allowance Certificate** allows one penalty-free withdrawal. Our Financial Checkup has saved some members hundreds each month! Stop in at any branch location or call us at (518) 458-2195 and speak with a helpful CAP COM Associate. Discover our real-world strategies to reduce monthly expenses, including reducing debt by consolidating high-rate debt into a single CAP COM loan. Or, simply choose to cut a daily expense like a cup of coffee.

Want to learn more about School Banking?

• Call (518) 458-2195 ext. 4656 or send an e-mail to [email protected]. • Visit www.capcomfcu.org/schoolbanking. • Ask at any branch location.

*Penalty for early withdrawals. Available in 18- or 36-month term. **One withdrawal of any amount may be taken penalty-free throughout the term of the certificate. After that, maximum withdrawal without penalty is $2,500. A minimum amount of $5,000 is required to open the certificate. $500 minimum to earn APY.

Life is filled with unexpected changes and there is no crystal ball to give you answers. However, there are insurance options to provide some certainty for you and your family. Insurance protects against the costs of accidents, illness, disability and death. Insurance choices are often based on your family, age and income. Use this overview of Life, Disability and Long-Term Care Insurance as a starting point. As a next step, talk with our Insurance Representatives or look into your employer-provided insurance options. Life Insurance is payable if you die and helps a surviving spouse and children maintain their standard of living. It can also be used to repay debt and fund education costs. A person making $100,000 a year with a sizable mortgage and two kids headed to college may need $1 million in coverage. Disability Income Insurance covers you when you are unable to work for an extended period. It replaces a portion of your lost income. Some employers offer company-paid disability income insurance. Typically, such coverage is only partial or short-term in nature.

Many people choose to purchase an individual disability income insurance policy. When shopping around for a policy, try to get a “non-cancelable

policy” with benefits for life, or at least to age 65.

Insurers will usually cover up to 65 percent of your salary. Generally, you should have total coverage equal to two thirds of your current pre-tax income. With an aging population and uncertainty about Social Security and

Medicare, Long-Term Care Insurance to cover the high cost of nursing home or

at-home health care is more common. Medicare pays very little of the cost of

long-term care. Medicaid will pay for the care, but only for patients whose assets are nearly depleted.1

Medigap Insurance can help pay medical expenses for the elderly not

covered by Medicare. However, it does not cover custodial nursing home costs. In fact, about half of all nursing home residents pay for care with personal savings.1

Preparing for life’s unexpected events is a smart move. Let an Insurance Representative from CAP COM Financial Services help you make smart choices to protect you and your family.
