The architecture is defined by an open plan that provides an inviting comfort-

able space conducive to frequent large dinner parties. The entry to the home is a series of surprises through interior spatial volumes, beautiful natural interior finishes, and grand exterior views through the oak woodland. The Client’s enjoyment of entertaining guests and passion for cooking drove the interior layout of the house.

“The house you build to live in as a home should be integral in every sense.

Integral to the site

To the purpose

And Integral to you

The house would then be a home in the best sense of the word. This we seem to have forgotten if we

haven’t learned it.

Houses have become a series of anonymous boxes that go into row upon row of bigger boxes CREATING a

mass nuisance.

But given the chance the architect can deliver a deeper more organic sense that comes alive resulting

from architecture”

NATURE EMBRACED

Success is in the details!  The owner’s attention to detail and dedication to the principles of green design practices made this project an amazing success.  Designed around

the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED Platinum standards, it’s successes go beyond typical  liv‐

ing and aesthetics and include the process and the performance.   The post occupancy meas‐

ured energy score yielded a HERS of 38, which represents  a home built 60% better that the

average.  This translates into lower energy cost, a smaller carbon footprint, and greater com‐

fort.   Features of the home that help achieve this goal are a well built tight exterior envelope,

spray foam isynene insulation, geothermal climate control system with energy recovery unit,

and energy efficient LED lighting.  The project also diverted over 90% of it’s construction waste

with only one 30 yard dumpster being sent to the landfill.  This was due in large part to the

homeowner’s extreme diligence in seeking out recycling sources for material and in some

cases personal hauling material to these sources.

This home is just steps away from Culver, Indiana’s quaint down‐

town.  A meal at the local favorite, Café Max, is at your fingertips.

Located on the west shore line of Lake Maxinkuckee, pano‐

ramic windows provide an uninterrupted view of the Culver Academy hillside  and the East Shore.  The plan is centered

around a massive stone masonry heater (fire place) that also in‐

cludes a wood burning pizza oven on the kitchen facing side.   The

Kitchen features a double island that provides the ultimate com‐

munal kitchen allowing the party to be in the kitchen without dis‐

rupting the food preparation.  A Large screen porch provides am‐

ple space for lounging, eating, and relaxing with the Lake

Breeze.  Bonus room over the garage offers an alternative en‐

tertainment space for the teenagers.  The master bedroom takes

the prime real‐estate on the second floor on the lake side with

three walls of windows and an outdoor lake facing balcony.  Large

lake side deck reaches out to lake with stone piers and a cable rail

that minimizes obstruction of the panoramic view.

Located on the south shore of Lake Maxinkuckee this lake home design reaches out to the lake by utilizing an

existing boat house structure that is grandfathered with a reduced lake set back.  The new house connects to

the existing boat house and lake with a series of patios and decks that offer the ultimate Lake Side out‐

door and indoor living space.  Covered decks and patios offer areas where you can get shelter from the

hot sun but still enjoy the fresh lake air.  Glass is the material of choice with no exception.   The lake side ele‐

vation utilizes large areas of glass to capture daylight and every view.

EAGLE’S PERCH ON LAKE Computer generated view

Casual style living is reinforced with the Owner’s interior finish selections, bright color palettes and the design of custom millwork pieces and treat-ments throughout the home.

The floor plan encourages family togetherness with the open planning of the main level living / dining / kitchen areas in addition to the open com-munication to the second floor loft, which has a short overlook to the open plan below and views out across Lake Maxincuckee. The children’s bed-rooms all open to this study loft which allows for, and encourages interaction amongst the siblings.

The window placement takes full advantage of the lake views and fills each room and space with an abundance of daylight, cross views and air flow ventilation throughout the house. The oversized fireplace in the first floor liv-ing space becomes the cozy gathering spot for this family group as the winds and snow move across the lake on those cold winter days.

MAXINKUCKEE

GEN‐

ERAL

The use of natural materials links this lake home to its surroundings. The non-imposing street-side view suggest a quiet ranch style living, which explodes to the lakeside with wide open, panoramic views out onto Lake Maxincuckee. The main level, second floor and lower walkout look out over the blue waters from the struc-ture’s perch, setting atop an enhanced boulder bluff. The design offers several op-tions for outdoor enjoyment with a patio terrace just above water level, or at the walkout patio laid with hand-chiselled blue stone slabs, or the main level deck areas. Screen porches further encour-age the Owners with their three children to enjoy the fresh out-door air of this lakeside setting.
