Learning and Living Our Catholic FaithDear Brothers and Sisters in the Eucharistic Lord Jesus,

Happy Feast of Corpus Christi!

Today we celebrate the Body and Blood of Jesus in a special way and with a Eucharistic Procession after the 11AM Mass. Please join us! Jesus in the Eucharist is the Source and Summit of our lives and indeed of all creation, and today highlights his love for us and how we should live in response to him. I hope you find the following homily of the great Medieval Dominican priest, philosopher and theologian, St Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274) enlightening as to the nature of God's love for us, his Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist and also that you find deeper reason and inspiration for coming to Mass and therefore for holiness! Worthily received Holy Communion makes Saints! God love you!

- Fr Jeremy OMV

"Since it was the will of God’s only-begotten Son that men should share in his divinity, he assumed our nature in order that by becoming man he might make men gods. Moreover, when he took our flesh he dedicated the whole of its substance to our salvation. He offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation. He shed his blood for our ransom and purification, so that we might be redeemed from our wretched state of bondage and cleansed from all sin. But to ensure that the memory of so great a gift would abide with us forever, he left his body as food and his blood as drink for the faithful to consume in the form of bread and wine.

O precious and wonderful banquet, that brings us salvation and contains all sweetness! Could anything be of more intrinsic value? Under the old law it was the flesh of calves and goats that was offered, but here Christ himself, the true God, is set before us as our food. What could be more wonderful than this? No other sacrament has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift. It is offered in the Church for the living and the dead, so that what was instituted for the salvation of all may be for the benefit of all. Yet, in the end, no one can fully express the sweetness of this sacrament, in which spiritual delight is tasted at its very source, and in which we renew the memory of that surpassing love for us which Christ revealed in his passion.

It was to impress the vastness of this love more firmly upon the hearts of the faithful that our Lord instituted this sacrament at the Last Supper. As he was on the point of leaving the world to go to the Father, after celebrating the Passover with his disciples, he left it as a perpetual memorial of his passion. It was the fulfilment of ancient figures and the greatest of all his miracles, while for those who were to experience the sorrow of his departure, it was destined to be a unique and abiding consolation."

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRISTFocus: We cannot afford to take the gift of the

Eucharist for granted. There are many reasons people give for no longer going to church. There is one great reason to attend. It is here as a community of believers we receive the most precious and sacred of all gifts from our God this side of heaven. It is here we receive the most sacred gift of Jesus in the Eucharist.

In our reading from Exodus, Moses and the people commit to the Lord and his covenant. In Hebrews, the author uses the image of a mediator in describing Jesus’ role in the new covenant we have with the Father. The Gospel recalls the first Eucharistic meal.

God Comes To Meet Man – Christ Jesus – “Mediator and Fullness of All Revelation”

God has said everything in his Word65. "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son."26 Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2:

In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. . . because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.27

There will be no further Revelation

ST. VINCENT DePAULTenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew that “God had visited his people.” When you hear the cries of the poor and reach out to help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that “God has visited them.”

Won’t you hear the cry of the poor and drop a coin in the poor box?

Boxes are located at the entrances to the Church.

THE KIOSK CORNERHow to Share Your Faith with Anyone

Recent popes have challenged all Catholics to participate in the New Evangelization. But most Catholics feel ill-equipped to take up the challenge. Terry Barber, founder of St. Joseph Communications, has written a practical guide that takes much of the pain and uncertainty out of sharing one's faith. Based on Barber's decades of personal experience as an effective evangelist and masterful communicator, and drawing on the perceptions, examples, and lessons of other great evangelists and apologist, How To Share Your Faith With Anyone informs, entertains, and inspires would-be, as well as, seasoned evangelists and teachers.

"Terry Barber has long been one of the Church's finest evangelists. His excellent book shows us how the New Evangelization requires new apologetics—a new way to explain why the Church's teachings are true and why Jesus is the answer to the deep desires of the human heart."

–Most Reverend Jose Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles

WELCOME NEW OMVNext week the OMV community and St Mary's welcome two new members to Alton! Deacon Paul Nguyen OMV and Br Brenden Bell OMV.

Deacon Paul will be ordained a priest on August 4 at the OMV parish of St Peter Chanel in Hawaiian Gardens, CA (His home parish) and will be a permanent addition to our St Mary's Family.

Br Brenden, also a California native, will be with us for about two months before returning to his theology studies at our OMV seminary in Boston.

Deacon Paul is originally from Long Beach, CA and is the eldest of four children. He met the OMV at St. Peter Chanel parish near there and began to sense the call to priesthood and religious life based on prayer and the example of the OMV there. He completed a B.S. in Computer

Science and then entered the Oblate seminary in 2010, professing first vows in 2014 and final vows this past February. He was ordained a deacon the next day and completed his theology studies this May, including an M.A. on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

During formation, Deacon Paul also served for a summer at St. Mary's, obtained a certificate in spiritual direction, and served for a pastoral year at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Florida.

Br. Brenden hails from Hemet, CA, and has one older brother. He went to Saint Mary’s College of California where he earned his B.A. double major in Theology and Philosophy. Later, Br. Brenden worked as a Writing Center tutor at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.

Feeling called to the religious life, Br. Brenden was introduced to the Oblates through St. Clement Shrine in Boston. He entered in September of 2015 and professed his first vows on August 5, 2017.

Please welcome them to St Mary’s

when you see them!
