If you vote by proxy ballot in advance, and then later decide you want to attend the meeting in person and cast your vote, you can do that as well. Just advise those there to assist with voting that you are now casting a ballot which will override your proxy vote.

There is a section on the Official Proxy vote if you are unsure of who you want to vote for, however are concerned with the association being able to carry on business by having a quorum, you can check the box on the proxy ballet that says “Proxy to be used for Quorum Only”.

Board members are not paid; it is strictly a volunteer position. Officers on the Board and responsibilities are determined by the seven members after the election.

Landscaping/Snow Removal Damages Many of you have submitted requests for repairs due to the winter equipment use for snow removal damages. All of those requests have been logged, and Acres has been advised. They will begin making the repairs as soon as the weather breaks. Spring clean-up and the landscaping portion of the contract starts on April 1st. Happy Spring everyone, the complex is really pretty as I drive around now. I can’t wait to see it come alive as your trees and flowers blossom. Always feel free to call or contact me with any issues or questions. If I can’t give you an answer, I will find out and get back to you. Betty Rauch Community Association Manager 847-695-6130 ext.11 [email protected]

Hello Edgewater Residents, Since my last newsletter communication to you, I have met so many of you. I am very impressed with your organization and all of the talented people working on so many committees. Thanks to all of you who came up to the Lodge during the meet and greet to meet me, and say goodbye to Joan. It was a frigid winter day, and I’m sure you had better things to do, so thank you for sharing your time with us. Thank you also Carrie, Elise and our Concierge ladies who set up the refreshments. Now is such an exciting time as we are working toward transition to a full homeowner Board of Directors. Nominations for Board Candidates are being submitted each day, and this association will have a good roster of nominees to choose from for Board member positions. At the March 10th Board meeting it was stated that there will be a Q & A section on the web site. We are still trying to get that to happen. I addressed a couple of these questions in my last e-mail blast, please keep those questions coming in. FAQ Regarding the Upcoming Turnover/Annual Meeting: You will have an opportunity to meet the

Candidates on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Creekside Lodge. Additionally there will be candidate information sent to you with the election information.

If you are unable to attend the First Annual Meeting and Election at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., you will be able to vote by proxy ballot and turn it into the Lodge by noon on May 12, 2015.

News from the Lifestyle Director

It is the volunteers that have coordinated the “drives” that are held in the Lodge, they remind you about Feed My Starving Children activities and are helping to clean up Bowes Rd. It is volunteers that help stuff the monthly newsletter (Didn’t know that? Join us anytime in the Arts & Crafts Room, the dates are listed on the activity calendar). We need our volunteers to help in many ways in our community. I am forever grateful to our volunteers for giving back and continuing to give back year after year. Haven’t yet gotten involved or not sure where you could volunteer? Please contact me and let’s discuss! Please join us as we say Thank You to our volunteers on Tuesday, April 28 at 9:30a.m. for our Volunteer Appreciation. Please register with the concierge for this free event.

I am so thankful that when people moved to Edgewater by Del Webb, they made a conscience decision to give back to the community they live in. If it wasn’t for our volunteers, this community wouldn’t be as successful, as beautiful, as friendly, welcoming, engaged and invested as it currently is. This community runs smoothly because of you, our volunteers. These volunteers are your neighbors and friends. Our volunteers make up our committees: Civic, Compliance, Finance, LifeStyle, Modifications and Property & Grounds. They make up our Neighborhood Representatives, our two current Board of Directors and what will soon be, our full seven member Board of Directors. Volunteers are the officers of the Chartered Clubs and the leaders of the Interest Groups. Volunteers are the ones who are planning, implementing and running the Social Planners Group’s activities. Our Volunteers spend countless hours before the event planning it, organizing, preparing flyers and planning budgets to get to a price. They are the ones who are here many hours before the event to decorate and prepare for the event; they are the last ones to leave. They are the ones serving you or checking you in.

need for the flags. LifeStyle Committee is also investigating purchasing another patio set and/or extra chairs that match the current set which would accommodate additional seating for outdoor events. Remember to use the Buy/Sell board located across from the fitness center. Index cards are available from the concierge. Be sure to put a date on the card as they are only on the board for 30 days then taken down. So far feedback has been positive from residents. As a reminder, all LifeStyle Committee enhancements are funded independently and are not dependent upon any monthly assessment fees.

Think Spring is finally here and hope it stays! Nice to finally see our neighbors (old and new) outside after a long winter.

Results from the Spring suggestion form will be tabulated in April and a survey will be in the May 2015 "Lifestyles" for residents to rate what enhancements will be most beneficial to our community. A $25 Meijer Gift Card will also be drawn for a lucky person turning in the survey. The LifeStyle Committee is currently investigating purchasing one or more American Flags for use in the lodge. There have been times when one or more meetings take place at the same time and there is a

than nine months on the Design Guidelines revision. When given the opportunity, please thank them for all their hard work. Now that the weather is finally changing for the better, the Modifications Committee will begin meeting weekly in April and continue through October. The Committee meets on Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. except for the second Tuesday of the month when the meeting is held at 2 p.m. Applications must be submitted by 2 p.m. on the Monday before a scheduled meeting. Applications submitted after this deadline will be held until the next meeting. Please remember to fill out applications completely (initial where requested, give specifics, attach pictures as requested, etc.). The primary reason applications are denied is due to incompleteness. Enjoy the beautiful spring weather that we hope is just around the corner!

On Tuesday, March 10, 2015, the Board approved the most recent edition of the Design Guidelines! The new edition includes the addition of items that had been approved since the last edition as

well as some additional changes to current guidelines. We hope the Design Guidelines will be available to residents around April 1. Procedures for getting your copy will be announced on the Information Screen near the Concierge Desk as well as through E-mail blasts. Of course, you will also be able to access it from the portal. And, since we have a new edition of Design Guidelines, we also have a new application for requested changes. The application will be available at the Concierge Desk as well as on the portal. Contractors Association for Edgewater's landscaping. Acres presented us with a recognition plaque from ILCA. The pool table cloths have been replaced and the crooked light pole in the Lodge parking lot repaired. Property and Grounds continues looking for an equipment staging area within or in close proximity to Edgewater for storing snow clearing equipment and supplies. We continue working with the City of Elgin to discuss procedures and locations. P&G continues reviewing the condition of the Lodge carpet areas accessing the offices and meeting rooms. We have met with one designer who has suggested several alternatives for us to consider. We are in the process of reviewing the 2014 maintenance of our natural areas that has been performed. The garbage bin area at the Lodge has suffered significant damage. We are waiting for requested bids to repair. We are evaluating repairing it with wood rather than repairing the stone.

April is a transition month between wrapping up winter activities and turning our attention to the landscape areas of Edgewater. Landscape crews will be performing their spring cleanup which includes inspecting lawns for any damage done from snow clearing operations. Acres will repair damaged turf from their snow clearing. However, it is the homeowners responsibility to make sure turf repairs are kept moist so it will take root and survive. If you have experienced any property damage to your home (driveway, garage door, etc.) or your mailbox from snow clearing activities and you have not completed a Snow Maintenance Concerns form yet, one should be completed and returned to the Lodge front desk as soon as possible. Other landscape activities beginning in late April include a general cleanup of the grounds, edging of plant beds, selective pruning of shrubs and a fertilizer application with pre-emergent crabgrass control. If you do not want any pruning of shrubs done in your front plant beds, now is the time to put out your red flag to alert Acres landscape crews. Acres Group has received an Excellence in Landscape Award from the Illinois Landscape

In addition, a Baggers Club meeting will be announced to elect officers for those term(s) that may be up or any vacancies. So members, think about volunteering. And if you haven’t joined the fun this year, put it on your ‘things to do’ list for next fiscal year (August 2015). We always have room for more. (Current active membership is 68. Wow!) Happy Spring!

Hopefully by the time this article is being read all are repeating ‘April showers bring May flowers and not more snow’! Enough of the snow and cold. And with the coming of spring Baggers Club is winding down for the 2014-2015 season. May will be our final month of play and we can look forward to our end of year banquet the week of May 18. This has typically been an off-site celebration. Location and date will be announced on the Baggers Club portal page and on Mondays and Tuesdays before play.

will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Everyone wants to meet the dashing young author of the scandalous novel—and his witty, perhaps even more scandalous wife. Zelda bobs her hair, adopts daring new fashions, and revels in this wild new world. Each place they go becomes a playground: New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera—where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein. Everything seems new and possible. Troubles, at first, seem to fade like morning mist. But not even Jay Gatsby’s parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous—sometimes infamous—husband? How can she forge her own identity while fighting her demons and Scott’s, too? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda’s irresistible story as she herself might have told it. Chapter One Book Club welcomes everyone to their monthly meetings. Have a question or need addition information please contact Rosalie @ 847-742-6654 or email [email protected]. May book selection is ‘My Beloved World’ by Sonia Sotomayor.

Please join your fellow ‘Literature Lovers’ on Tuesday, April 7 at 7 PM as we discuss the novel by Therese Anne Fowler, “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald”. Therese Anne Fowler has a BA in

sociology/cultural anthropology and an MFA in creative writing. Her work has won honors from the Faulkner Society and Thomas Wolfe Fiction prize competitions. An Illinois native, she currently lives in North Carolina. When the beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the “ungettable” Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn’t wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed. But after Scott sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to Scribner’s, Zelda optimistically boards a train north, to marry him in the vestry of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and take the rest as it comes. What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined attention and success and celebrity that

The Late Bloomers Garden Club Chartered Club

Tim has his own business in St. Charles called Tim Judge Design where he does both interior and landscape design. Tim’s quote is “your entryway should be a unique, focal destination.” “The pathway to your home should be warm and inviting and add to your curb-appeal.” He also does interior consultation on colors, fabrics and drapery choices and will stage your home if you are re-locating. His other talents are designing jewelry and wall sculptures. He’s your “go to” guy for all things artistic inside and out! A little secret, Tim was recently called back for a second audition for The Voice and though he didn’t make it to the next level, he was given hope to try again. Maybe we can get him to sing us a song? Oh the wonders of Spring! Mark your calendar for April 23rd as we begin our 2nd year with this fabulous program. We always welcome new faces. We meet the 4th Thursday of each month, unless otherwise noted. We meet in the Oak and Hickory rooms at the Lodge at 1 p.m. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sandi Bowgren, President at (630) 677-1477 or e mail [email protected]. We do charge a $5.00 fee to cover the cost of our presenters.

By the time the April Lifestyle magazine is available, many of us will be thinking of bringing our tired lawns of winter into cheery and inviting lawns of spring and summer. Today as I am writing this article for the newsletter, it is a beautiful 60+ degrees outside and hopefully by the time April is upon us, we will have had many such days of warmer temps, maybe even in the 70’s. Spring is the perfect time of year to plant seeds and also to enjoy and watch the bulbs that were planted in the Fall, come to life in the spring. The Late Bloomers Garden Club was established last March. Our seeds were planted and as the year continued our blooms continued to blossom, and now as we begin our second year, we anticipate our Garden to continue to grow, a club that can be enjoyed and attended by all of the Edgewater community. Our program this month is the perfect way to start the Spring season. Tim Judge will be presenting “Refreshing Your Front Door Pathway.” Tim has a degree from Eastern Illinois University in Art Education, a Masters degree from Northern Illinois University in Fine Art Design and a Horticulture degree from the College of DuPage.

Bunco, what is Bunco? Well Bunco is a simple game using three dice and score card. You team up with a table of four. Each player has a partner. You roll the dice until 21 is reached by the controlling table or head table. One group or partners at each table wins if they have more points obtained. Game starts with number 1 and goes through to 6. You do not need to know how to play! Just come and have a good time and meet new friends and neighbors. We play in the sunroom every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Come, play and socialize with us! See you there! Any questions please call Barb at 224-535-8246.

_____________________________________ Community Garden Plots

Greetings to all of the gardeners at Edgewater! Your fire station on Longcommon Parkway has an abundance of open plots in the garden located directly to the west of your community on the city’s property. You can choose your plot size and choose to put in a raised bed if you desire to do so. There is a water source on site as well as a few tools. We are starting our irrigation system this year and hope to have the plots sprinkled daily using a timer. The annual cost is $25. This will get you a plot, water, mulch around your bed, and some compost to enrich your soil. Please feel free to contact me with your questions and to learn about our contract. Lt. Robert Bedard [email protected]

Art at Edgewater Kathee Michalski is the featured artist for the month of March. We hope you had a chance to visit the exhibit area in the back hallway. Kathee’s favorite medium is water color paints. We appreciate Kathee sharing her paintings with all of us. We are always open to sharing art work done by our Edgewater residents. Please let us know if you would be willing to loan your art work for all of us to enjoy. The current contact person is Jan Reed, 847-841-1641 or [email protected].

Christian Adult Fellowship at Edgewater

You are invited to join us as we conclude our study on the Gospel of John. Instead of a life of Jesus, John wrote a powerful argument demonstrating Jesus is the source of eternal life. This Bible study runs through May 6. April 8 - #11. A Close Relationship with Christ (14:15-17:26) April 22 - #12. Rejecting the Son God (18:1- 19:42) May 6 (First Wednesday) - #13. Doubt Resolved...I Believe! (20:1-21:25) On May 27 we will begin a seven session series with Max Lucado (via DVD): Grace - More Than We Deserve; Greater Than We Imagine with the first session, “The Grace Shaped Life.” “We think we know what grace means, but do we really? Have we settled for wimpy grace that politely occupies a phrase in a hymn or fits nicely on a church sign and never causes trouble or demands a response. When asked, “Do you believe in grace?” who could say no? In this series Max Lucado asks a deeper question: Have you been changed by grace? Shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Emboldened by grace? Softened by grace? Snatched by the nape of your neck and shaken to your senses by grace? Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off. Let’s make certain grace gets you.” The series utilizes a scripture study guide and brief DVD presentations. Max Lucado has over 100 million products in print and is one of America’s favorite writers. He serves the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas where he lives with his wife, Danalyn, and a sweet but misbehaving mutt, Andy. Who are we? We are Christians from a variety of congregations ranging from Roman Catholic to American Baptist who have come from far and near to relocate in Edgewater where we meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 7:00-8:30 pm in the Craft room at the Lodge. The fellowship has been in existence since 2007; it averages 8-18 participants. We usually break for

The Magic Continues

Holiday Magic 2014 was held at the Royal Fox Country Club December 7, 2014. This was our first year to try both a luncheon

and dinner on the same day. We are happy to report that the new format was extremely successful. Thank you to everyone who filled out a survey. A total of 351 attendees responded which is a record number. As we are neighbors entertaining neighbors, your input is invaluable. Almost all the attendees were happy with the split venue. Most loved the location and were very pleased with the food except for the dessert at the luncheon. Again, most people prefer a location within 15 miles and are willing to pay between $30 and $40 for the event while a few even said they would pay $40-$45 and above. Seated meals were preferred by 316 of the 351 attendees. And more than half did not object to having the event in a location with separate rooms. At a wrap-up meeting on January 21, 2015, the 2014 committee discussed the results of the survey and reviewed all the comments. As a result, committee members were asked to check into the availability for the Royal Fox Country Club, Elgin Country Club, Pheasant Run, and Holiday Inn. Potential locations were narrowed to Royal Fox Country Club and Elgin Country Club. It was also decided to keep a luncheon and dinner format. On February 5, 2015, the Holiday Magic 2015 Committee met to decide the location for 2015. After considerable discussion it was decided to change the venue to a Saturday with a luncheon and a dinner at the Elgin Country Club. Save the date for Saturday, December 5, 2015! Registration will be held in September. The Holiday Magic Committee met again on March 6, 2015. We focused on budget, entertainment, and committee assignments. Each month you will receive updates in Lifestyles. If you are interested in helping with Holiday Magic 2015, contact co-chairs Sandi Bowgren at [email protected], Barb Tillman at [email protected], Sharon Fisher-Larson at [email protected], or Rose Anne Steckbeck at [email protected]. in the Lodge is the location and 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm is the time. As this article is being written, (March 10th) we are getting very close to another milestone for the Kards R Us activity here at Edgewater. We are closing in on the $20,000.00 sales mark. Please keep an eye on our rack at the Creekside Lodge. When you see the Celebration Balloons, you will know we have achieved that goal. And all that money will have gone to the Elgin Crisis Center to help in the care of the children. If you have any questions, please call Bobbi Bradley at 847-841-1006. She or her husband Chuck will be more than happy to answer all your questions.

_____________________________________ Edgewater Paint Drops

On the first and third Mondays of every month you will see creative people at work in The Arts and Crafts Room at Creekside Lodge. This is a non-charter group that enjoys decorative painting. We usually start with a pattern and directions. The medium that we use is acrylic paints. Even though our projects change once a month or so, we always count on having fun and enjoying our finished work. If this sounds like a group you might be interested in joining, stop by on a Monday when we are scheduled and check us out. For questions or more information, contact Jan Reed 847-841-1641.

_____________________________________ Writers Club

At our next meeting coming up we have a few new people. We don't just write short stories we also have some who write poems, and others who are interested in writing their memories to leave behind for their grandchildren. Whatever you like to do or just come and listen we would be happy to have you join in. Remember whatever it takes to enjoy life and keep our memories going is a good thing! Every 3rd Monday of the month at 9:30a.m. see you at the lodge.

Edgewtaer Kardz R Us When Kards R Us sold the first card on the rack in the Creekside Lodge, Edgewater was a much smaller community. We had already started to sell at locations outside of our community. We would visit Senior Apartment developments, nursing homes etc. on a monthly schedule. As more homes sold and became occupied here at Edgewater, we found it difficult to continue our outside sales. Today, the only sales are off our rack at the lodge. The locations we use to service would like to see us return, but we simply do not have the inventory to try to do sales outside the Edgewater community. As it is, there are times we have run critically low on certain cards for our own rack here. There are really two reasons for this. First, we need card donations. While we do get steady donations of used cards, there are certain types of cards that are in heavy demand and we are always short. Cards for children, grandchild, great grandchild, are always being asked for, and you may well have expected this. For the most part, donations of these types of cards will have to come from outside the Edgewater community. If you could ask your sons and daughters to save them and bring them to you when they visit, it would be greatly appreciated. Remember, we need ALL types of cards that are sent to young people. Birthday for sure, but also graduation, confirmation, communion, get well, all holiday and so on. Also, donations being sought are Wedding, New Baby, Retirement, New House, Good Bye and Thinking Of You. There are times that we completely run out of these cards. We can also use donations of envelopes for the cards. Second, we need YOU. Yes, we can always use more volunteers to help us make the cards. This is an easy, hands on activity that requires no experience. Your only decision is do you want to cut or glue. There is someone there to help guide you. You will meet new neighbors and establish friendships. And you will be helping a great cause. Remember, 100% of the money collected is donated to the Elgin Crisis Center and they use it for the children that are under their care. So please join us. Our group gets together on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. The Arts and Crafts room

Edgewater Railroad Club Spring is here! Now is the time to take a train trip or at least reminisce about the trains you have experienced, either actual ones or

models. Here at the ERC (Edgewater Railroad Club) we chat about both. So welcome aboard! On Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 1:30 at the Lodge Carl Ball, system wide Chief of Police of the Santa Fe Railway for 20 years will be speaking about the fun and problems of providing security for a national railroad system which included over 300 officers and 100 civilian employees. This special meeting is open to all Edgewater residents and is free. If you have any interest, big or small, in railroading or model railroading, join us second Tuesdays as we explore railroads, big and small. We leave on the second Tuesday of each month from the railroad station (lodge) promptly at 1:30 usually arriving at our destination by 3:00. Passengers include railroad history buffs, armchair railroaders, model builders, and those who are just fascinated by trains (and model trains). As we travel, we will discuss trains and their habitat. Last month Arnie shared his passion via slides for brake designs for engines and cars from the earliest to the Westinghouse design which is the basis for today’s braking systems. We are currently building a modular N scale railroad which we first exhibited when children young and old visited Santa Claus in November at the lodge. We hope to make it an annual affair. We are in the process of adding a bend in the road so we may lay more track. We are learning how to create scenery and other fine points of modeling. For an example of what we are doing, come to the Expo Saturday morning, April 11, 2015 to see a running model. We often schedule off-site meetings on the fourth Tuesday when we visit homes where we view a variety of layouts, some in basements and some in converted bedrooms. Plans for this coming year include an off site visit to a railroad museum on May 26 and our annual dinner meeting at a restaurant with a train theme on June 23. Contact our conductor and engineer, John DeJong (847-695-0429) for more information. Come join us on April 14, the second Tuesday of the month, at 1:30 and again on May 12. Be seeing you!

_____________________________________ Genealogy Group

Our Next Genealogy Group Meeting will be on Saturday, April 11th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM in the Sunroom. What I love about our Genealogy group is the opportunity to share

what we have learned with each other. We look forward to sharing what we learned from the March DuPage County Genealogical Society Conference with you at the APRIL Meeting. Whether you are just starting in Genealogy or you are well along in your research, you will DEFINITELY want to attend this meeting to hear what we learned. The Genealogy Group did not meet in March because many of us planned to attend the DuPage County Genealogical Society Conference held on Saturday, March 14th. We went to the conference together and had a wonderful time. This all-day event offered 16 different presentations given by 4 different genealogy experts. I was impressed that the topics covered areas for both beginners AND experts. The food was great, the presenters were top notch, and the camaraderie added to the day immensely. The Conference Covered Topics such as:

Beginning Genealogy Using Accredited Methods

When You Hit a Brick Wall, Hit the Genealogical Research.

7 Habits of Highly Frugal Genealogist Breaking Brick Walls with Facebook's 3900+ Genealogy Groups I cannot wait to hear about what the other Genealogy Group members learned as they agreed to share their experiences at the April meeting. We look forward to seeing you ALSO at the Club Expo held on the same day as our April meeting. We will be offering handouts to get you started and to learn your interests. EDGEWATER TRAVEL CLUB

Happy Travels everyone! April is here and its time to pack those suitcases and head off to our next adventure! Please join us at our April Edgewater Travel Club meeting where we will update everyone on our current Travel Club group plans, both France in May and Las Vegas in June. We will also be discussing our group travel ideas for 2016. It’s definitely time to start planning for 2016! Believe it or not and happily for those last minute adventurer's, there are still a limited few staterooms available on our Viking River Cruise to amazing and beautiful Paris and the historic Normandy region, departing this May 15 through May22nd. I love Paris in the springtime…ahhh, someone should write a song! If you’ve always talked about seeing the wonders of France, it may not be too late to join us. Please give us a call for more information and reserve your spot. We would love for you to join us. It’s going to be a very exciting and beautiful itinerary. And, if Las Vegas is on your list of fun trips, too, we still have limited availability for a great Edgewater Group trip to the Mirage Hotel & Casino, June 01-04, 2015. We’ve got a great turnout and would welcome even more folks to join in the fun. Give us a call soon, if you’re interested. At April’s meeting we have interesting information to share on recent Travel research winners, including which companies are rated at the top for cruising and land based travel. These results are always interesting. We will also have a short video on timely travel topics. As always, we would love to hear from all of you about your recent travel adventures. Last month’s meeting with our neighbor, Bob Hunt, was really awesome! Our personal video journals are not quite as professional, still in the “idea stages,” but we are happy to share our thoughts and experiences and hope you are, too. We welcome all travel news! If you haven’t been to one of our recent travel meetings please drop in and join us. We are a very casual informal club talking about all things travel. Our next meeting will be the third Wednesday of the month, April 15, 10:00am at the

from getting “complacent” with the same old movements and intensity level. Similarly, studies suggest that exercise can improve cognitive function and the ability to shift quickly between tasks. Wait, it gets even better! Good Company: One of the most enjoyable aspects of group fitness classes is the friendly people you’ll meet. The social component of group exercise is one of the major benefits that cannot be overestimated. I actually met my husband teaching my aerobic class! While we can’t promise true love, we do provide a class atmosphere that is both welcoming and instructional. Many studies have shown that the camaraderie that develops naturally in a group fitness class fosters perhaps the greatest benefit of all, which is: Adherence: We all have started activities with good intentions that went by the wayside. The numerous health benefits of regular exercise can only be realized one way: regular exercise. A full and consistent class schedule at Del Webb provides the means and motivation. Motivation, coupled with your skilled and committed instructors is your recipe for success. Pick up a schedule and join the fun.

Fitness Center Reminders

The Fitness Center inside Creekside Lodge is a popular place these days and we welcome that! We are glad so many people are using the amenities that are literally in your back yard. A couple of reminders regarding the Fitness Center: -Please change your shoes all year round, but especially in the winter months. The sand, salt and dirt otherwise get into the belts and onto the equipment, leading to more wear and tear on the equipment which can ultimately lead to malfunction of the equipment. There are cubbies available in the fitness center to place your outside shoes or in the lockerroom. -When the Fitness Center is busy, please respect a 30-minute time limit on all cardio machines. There are many residents who want to use the machines. -Please wipe down each piece of equipment after use. There are towels in each corner of the fitness center. If the towels are ever out, please inform a staff member and they will see that these are refilled. Thank you for your attention to these items.

_____________________________________ GROUP FITNESS CLASSES--

THE BENEFITS ADD UP By Karen Schroeder, ACE Certified Personal Trainer One of the very cornerstones of the Del Webb lifestyle is promoting quality of life through activity. It is likely one of the reasons you chose to live here. Of your many diverse choices, attending group fitness classes may yield some of the greatest benefits for you both physically and socially. Let’s explore a few: Convenience: When the weather starts getting bad, no need to simply curl up; you’ll have time for that later because your clubhouse is close by. “No Time” is the number one reason people site for not exercising, so forget longer drives and icy roads--fitness is almost at your doorstep. Variety: Take the guesswork out of your workout. You don’t have to rely on your own knowledge and creativity to make your workouts effective, safe, and enjoyable--it’s done for you! Our certified Del Webb instructors plan out classes that will keep you physically and mentally engaged. Physically, a variety of exercises keeps your muscles

along with a memorial poster highlighting our founder, Peter Catsadimas who we sadly lost during the year. Evelyn Armstrong and Kaye Lincicome (The Dynamic Duo) are the backbone to Music Makers and all members look up to them so that we constantly give the best performances we can. They truly try to keep us in line which sometimes takes a lot of endurance. Thanks to both of them for their time, patience and talent. We can always use more voices so if you are even thinking about joining, or if you would like to observe, just come up to the lodge on any Monday at 1:30PM and find out what we are all about.. For more information, please call Carole Buckley at 847-741-1102. All are welcome.

We had two performances in March one at Rosewood Care Center of Elgin on the 4th and the other at Heritage Woods in South Elgin on the 16th. We incorporated our Irish music into these performances in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. We were glad to hear that two of our members, Helen and Yolanda are home and are doing well. This month we have a two performances scheduled one on April 6th at Sherman West Court and the other on April 13th at White Oaks in South Elgin which is located on Spring Street. Girls Night Out

Spring is here and its time to hit the road! We are going to be dining at Tony Spavone’s Ristorante, 266 W. Lake Street,

Bloomingdale, on Wednesday, April 22nd. This may sound like a far distance to travel, but I’m assured it is a 16 mile trip and about 25 minutes to get there. This is a very special restaurant as Tony will wander the floors during the evening, doing his Tony Bennett style singing. If we know the songs, we can even join in on the singing! No microphones will be available! The group will be seated near the fireplace for a cozy evening, and we will be ordering off the menu with separate checks available. You may check out the menu by going to http://tonyspavonesristorante.com There is sure to be something there to satisfy your tastebuds. Because of the distance, please keep in mind our ladies who do not care to drive at night and offer a ride. Carpooling would certainly be in line for this event! So that Tony may know how many are coming, please respond to me by Sunday evening, April 19th via 847-468-1545 or [email protected]. This group has no agenda except good food and great company! ALL women of Edgewater are invited to participate whether working or retired, single, married or widowed, seasoned Edgewater resident or just newly arrived. Come join our group for some good times and meet the gals of Edgewater. For more information about our group, visit us at the Club Expo on April 11th, 9-11 am.

Alisa Lara of the Visiting Nurses Association discussed their federally qualified health center offering affordable care for everyone, with particular attention to cancer diagnosis, psychiatric counseling and women’s health and wellness. Next, we focused on dollars and cents as a team from New York Life discussed the importance of taking care of a veteran’s family. The services they provide are many and varied, not just life insurance. They offered to help veterans with their financial planning. And, yes, Honest Abe is calling. And what started as a Veterans’ Group trip was opened to all of Edgewater. May 16 and 17 we’ll be visiting Lincoln’s home and museum. So no doubt there will be plenty of pictures to be shared when we return. John Pupillo has been kind enough to arrange what should be a fun, informative trip. The next meeting will be April 1 (no fooling), and we invite all Edgewater veterans to join us. No dues, just fun and valuable information. In May, the normal “first Wednesday” meeting is cancelled, but on Friday, May 22, we will be memorializing all of the members we have lost and recognizing widows and loved ones. 7:00 p.m. at the Lodge for each of the above.

“FULL HOUSE” AT MARCH VETERANS’ GROUP MEETING

The donuts and coffee at our Veterans’ Group meetings are always great, as is the camaraderie. The speakers have been consistently interesting, but on March 4, we really outdid ourselves with three guest speakers plus a presentation on our upcoming trip to Springfield. The first presentation demystified hospice care for veterans. Andy Balafas of the Northern Tier Veterans’ Partnership explained what hospice care is and the fact that it is generally covered by Medicare, Part A. He emphasized that hospice and palliative care are designed to help the patient and his or her family. It is not just physical but rather psychological and spiritual. It is most commonly provided in the patient’s home. It has changed with the times: In much of the Twentieth Century, most patients died at home. Later, the hospital was the likely place. Today, it can be either, depending on the patient’s symptoms and care required. Andy also discussed the POLST form (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment), advanced directives, DNR orders, living wills and power of attorney for medical care. Surprisingly, only 4% of veterans die in VA care, and veterans do not need to be registered for VA care to qualify for hospice benefits.
