The Baja SplendorDusty roads, stark desert landscapes, caves tattooed with ancient anthropomorphic art, sleepy fishing villages and the rugged coast-lines of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean all combine to create the magnificent geogra-phy of the Baja California Peninsula. This thin finger of land, which stretches for almost 800 miles from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas, is the planet’s third longest peninsula.

Its southern part is known as the Cape Region and encompasses the rapidly growing munici-pality of Los Cabos. Few visitors today realize that just one generation ago, this area was wild and nearly uninhabited. Yet despite the widespread development of the last few years, nature enthusiasts searching for the end of the road are still constantly surprised and amazed by Baja’s astonishing splendor. Welcome to Baja!

A playground for Baja explorers, visitors and locals, the Sea of Cortez, officially known as the Gulf of California, is home to at least 3,000 known species of marine creatures-the richest abundance of undersea life anywhere on the planet.

How it came aboutThe Sea of Cortez is a thousand-mile ocean trench that extends between the Baja Peninsula on the west and the Sierra Madre Mountains on the east. According to scientists, approxi-mately four to six million years ago, a seg-ment of the East Pacific Rise split, separating Baja from mainland Mexico, shifting it, and much of southern California, in a northwest-erly direction, creating a sea as a result.

Days of fame

That sea has fascinated mariners around the world since its “discovery” by Span-iard Francisco Ulloa in 1540. He named it for Hernán Cortez . It attracted even more attention and interest since John Steinbeck wrote Log of the Sea of Cortez back in the 1940s and Jacques Cousteau called it the “world’s aquarium.”

Located on the southern end of the Sea of Cortez, Los Cabos is the perfect place to enjoy its warm, calm waters. Visitors can indulge in world-class sport fishing. You can motor out to Loveŕ s Beach at Land’s End on a Jet Ski or parasail right from Medano Beach. There are tours by land or sea to kayak and snorkel in the crystal clear waters, both in Los Cabos and further north in Cabo Pulmo. Taking a sunset cruise is a popular way to enjoy a happy hour at sea, while whale watching is a must-do during the winter months.

FLORAThough the area boasts an average of 340 sunny days a year, it receives enough rain between July and November that parts of it are classified as “arid tropical forest” by botanists. Woodlands of oak and piňon in the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range make up the rest of the area’s botanical specificity. While about 4,000 plant species grow on the Baja Peninsula-from the small elephant tree to the spiny ocotillo-the Cape Region’s vegetation is dominated by cacti, other drought-tolerant plants, pines and palm trees.

FAUNAAs for creatures, Los Cabos is still on the wild side. Several species of lizards and iguanas share their territory with coyotes, gray foxes, raccoons and even bobcats, but you’re not very likely to have a face-to-face encounter with any of these, as they are active primarily at night.

Exploring the Wilderness

There are several ways to explore Baja’s amazing wilderness. If you like the wind in your hair and a cloud of dust behind you, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are for you. Speeding across the desert or over sand dunes along the shore, you’ll witness some of Los Cabos’ most spectacular vistas. Horseback riding allows visitors a unique opportunity to experience the landscape at a more leisurely pace. And if you like to touch and feel as well as see things up close, a hiking tour into the Sierra de la Laguna will provide an interest-ing insight. For those who want it all: the speed, the insight, the close up on nature combined with a slice of local culture, a desert safari may be the best fit.

Every winter thousands of gray and humpback whales head for Baja in search of warmer waters. During their annual pilgrimage south, they swim more than 10,000 miles from the Arctic and back again each spring. Grays and humpbacks are the most common species of whales seen off the shores of Los Cabos and they range from 40 to 50 feet long, weighing from 50,000 to 90,000 pounds.

Friendly and curious

Delighting onlookers from the Alaskan archipelago down the Pacific coast-line to Land’s End, shore-loving grays have captured the hearts of many. Friendly to the point of permitting human touch, whales are known to be as curious of us, as we are of them.

The miracle of life

Averaging 4 to 5 knots per hour, the grays arrive off Baja California Penin-sula in November and December and calve in the shallow lagoons of San Ignacio, Scammon’s, Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay.

The Gentle Giants

After a 13-month gestation period, the 15-foot, 1,500-pound calves are born, growing to about 19 feet and 3,000 pound before leaving the la-goon. Each lagoon, 250 to 500 miles northwest of Cabo San Lucas, is protected by the Mexican federal government. To allow us the privilege of visiting these nurseries, whale-watching boats are regulated by strict rules of conduct.

Whales around Los Cabos

Although the lagoons are further north, grays do frequent Los Cabos. Moth-ers and juveniles will head out to open ocean, gravitating to warmer water, cruising the coast until early spring.

For those blessed with both patience and a sense of adventure, whale watching excursions can be highly addictive. If you do not see whales on your first trip, you’ll likely see other fascinating marine life. The added marvel of dolphins, sea lions, rays, whale sharks, fish boils, sea birds, and the occasional olive ridley and Laud sea turtles, makes the time onboard more than worthwhile.

Whether you are a guest at one of our Lifestyle Villas or are simply looking for a fun and safe whale watching excursion in Los Cabos or San Ignacio, Lifestyle Manage-ment Services can help you make all necessary arrangements with the area’s most

reputable companies. Contact us to book your whale watching experience.
