VIKING's throw-overboardliferafts are available in twoversions: Traditional and self-righting.

Traditional SOLAS liferaftThe traditional SOLAS throw-overboard liferaft is availablein sizes ranging from 6 to 51person capacities (referred toas type DK). For special needs,a 102 person unit (2 x 51person liferafts packed intoone container) is available.

Self-righting throw-overboard liferaftThe automatically self-right-ing liferafts, throw-overboardtype (referred to as type DKS),are available in 25, 51, 101and 150 person capacities. They have been approvedaccording to the latest inter-national regulations applyingto ro-ro passenger ships. The liferafts are to be appliedwith evacuation slides orchutes installed on board ro-ro ferries. They may also

serve as liferafts for directboarding from decks notmore than 1.5 m abovewater level on board smallferries and passenger ships.

Launching The throw-overboard liferaftis released from its cradle (by disengaging the slip hook)and thrown overboard, orslides automatically whenreleased. When waterborne,

the liferaft inflates on a hardpull of the painter line and isthen ready for boarding. In combination with the eva-cuation systems the liferaftsare remote released. Whenwaterborne, the liferaft con-tainer is connected to theinflated evacuation system. The liferaft inflates on a hardpull of the quick release lineand is then ready for board-ing.

Traditional davit-launched liferaftThe traditional SOLAS davit-launched liferaft is availablein sizes 12, 16, 20, 25 and 35person carrying capacities(referred to as DKF).

Self-righting davit-launched liferaftThe automatically self-rightingliferafts, davit-launched type(referred to as type DKFS)are available in 25 and 39person capacities. They have

been approved according tothe latest international regu-lations applying to ro-ro pas-senger ships.

LaunchingThe davit-launched liferaft isto be connected to the davitand then inflated at decklevel, thus enabling the pas-sengers to board it fromdeck. Capacities

Reliability A liferaft may be a person'slast chance of survival. It istherefore manufactured withthe greatest care and respectas to the situation in which itis likely to be used.

Basic materialThe basic material of VIKINGliferafts is a strong webbingcovered with natural rubber. An extremely advantageousfeature of rubber is its elasti-city. Elasticity is equal to flex-ibility which improves reli-ability in an emergency causingthe liferaft to be exposed toquite heavy loads. During numerous tests madein the right element, theflexibility of the VIKING life-raft has proved crucial to itsfunctioning when deployedat extremely low temperat-

ures, when being boardedand when being loaded inrough sea.

Demanding testsThe liferafts have been suc-cessfully tested in compli-ance with the prescribedinternational requirementsand regulations. For instancethey have been subjected tovelocity tests at forces of 30m/sec and to sea trials inrough sea conditions. As for the self-righting life-rafts, they have also beensubjected to tests demon-strating their self-rightingproperties.

ApprovalsDesigned to comply with thenew International MaritimeOrganisation / SOLAS ChapterIII requirements to maritime

equipment, VIKING's productshave also been fully approvedby many other countriesthroughout the world.Besides, accreditation hasbeen received by ClassificationSocieties like Det NorskeVeritas – on behalf of the EU.

ServicingThe type-approved liferaftsmust be serviced at a VIKINGauthorized servicing stationevery twelve months in accord-ance with national and inter-national regulations.

Designed and manufacturedfor air force applications, theaviation liferaft (referred toas AVS) comes in a highlydurable, light-weight polyu-rethane-coated nylon fabriccomplying with FAA specifi-cations. A special boardingarrangement allows eva-cuees lying in the water toalmost directly swim into theliferaft.

Designed and manufacturedto meet the requirements foruse on passenger ships oper-ating in inland and coastalwaters, the open and fullyreversible liferaft/inflatablebouyant apparatus (referredto as DKR/IBA) is intendedfor shipwrecked persons like-ly to be exposed to badweather conditions only for ashort period of time beforebeing located and picked up.

The new generation ofVIKING RescYou™ leisureliferafts does not take upmuch space. They are easy tohandle and come in two ver-sions: a standard throw-over-board liferaft (referred to asUKL) and a self-righting lifer-aft (referred to as UKSL) exceeding the new ISOregulations by providingthese self-righting capabilities.

Intended for transfer ofpeople from the water tothe deck in an emergency(referred to as MOR). Operated in a way similar tostandard davit-launchedliferafts and kept to the ship'sside by means of bowsinglines.
