VIKING’s evacuation dual chute system is designed for the largest passenger carrying vessels.

The evacuation dual chute, VEDC, is VIKING’s highest capacity chute system to date and is combined with 153 person high capacity liferafts for safe, rapid evacuation from large passenger carrying vessels.

This unique design combines the highest evacuation capacity with discreet, compact and self-contained design for maximum safety and relatively little deck disruption.

Largest capacity chute system availableThe unique dual system is constructed from two conjoined chutes. The fully enclosed chute lined with aramid protects evacuees from environmental hazards, such as severe weather conditions, during descent directly into high capacity liferafts.

The design is based on extensive experience in manufacturing the market’s leading evacuation chute systems. Exhaustive trials have proven that the new system provides the stability and passenger protection synonymous with VIKING products.

Adaptable capacityEach VEDC system contains two 153 person liferafts. Capacity can be increased to suit the exact ship requirement with additional drop liferafts.

Flexible installationThe system is self-contained and compact, which means that it can be installed in a vessel convenient position on deck or built into a suitable open recess. Additional liferafts can be stowed apart from the system and released by remote release when required.

The system’s flexible capacity can be adapted to suit any vessel requirement.

Simple to deployVIKING’s VEDC is simple to operate and is released simply by pulling on the release handle. The descending sledge carrying the liferafts pulls the chute from the chute box. As the sledge descends into the water, the liferafts automatically inflate, pulling the chute into place inside the inner liferaft.

This rapid deployment function means that the system takes just minutes to fully deploy and requires few trained crew members.

SOLAS requirements are minimum standards for VIKINGVIKING systems are tried and tested for capacity and stability in conditions at least matching, but often well above, those required for certification.

The VEDC system can be fitted in an open recess, on open deck or into the ship side.

The dual chute system is easy to operate and requires few trained crew members.

The system is activated by pulling the handle. The descending sledge pulls the chute box into the correct position for the following deployment steps.

The sledge continues to pull the chute out of the chute box and into position. It sinks in the water, automati-cally inflating the liferafts. During the final stage, the inflation pulls the chutes into the inflating liferaft.

After bowsing the liferafts securely against the ship side, the system is ready for evacuation to begin.

The entire process takes just two minutes.

Remote liferaft release

The containers can be stored on racks anywhere on deck, even in inaccessible areas. The liferafts can be remotely released when required and are immediately ready to operate.

VIKING systems use Hammar Manual Remote Release Systems (MRRS) or Hammar Electronic Remote Release Systems (ERRS) to remotely release the liferafts.

MRRS: Pumping on the release system pump creates a vacuum which in turn activates the hydrostatic release unit. A sharp stainless steel knife within the unit cuts through the rope that holds the liferaft in place.

Both the MRRS and the ERRS systems are effective and reliable methods of releasing liferafts from their storage rack.

Remote release systems allow liferaft containers to be stored far away from the MES system.

Bowsing winches are used to bowse the liferafts into position in relation to the ship side.

The winch and bowsing line ensure that the liferaft remains stable alongside the ship and is not moved out of position by the movement of the waves.

VIKING systems include Andersen Winches. In situations where every second counts, these lightweight stainless steel winches allow for a rapid pull in of the line. Vertical ribs on the drum provide extra grip on the bowsing line, meaning that the winch needs to be turned fewer times.

The highly polished surface minimises the risk of jamming. The bowsing line slides easily up the self tailing drum, constantly pushed up by the following rope wind.

The spring loaded locking system in the handle means that the winch can easily be operated with one hand.

Davit launched liferafts (DKF, DKFS)Davit launched liferafts are designed to be inflated and boarded at deck level, and then lowered into the water. They are available as self-righting canopied liferafts or standard canopied liferafts.

They are designed to carry 12, 25, 35 or 39 persons and are an effective means of dry-shod evacuation and can either be an alternative to chute or slide systems or a supplement.

VIKING Automatic Slide (VAS)VIKING has developed a 153 person open reversible liferaft and minislide system packed into a single aluminum stowage box. The real magic of this system lies in its one-button, one-person release and operation.

The VAS system is designed and certified for vessels on domestic voyages such as ferries sailing in protected waters. It enables crew to evacuate up to 153 people in one go and is designed for evacuation heights between 1.5 - 3.65 metres.

The VAS system is very easy to install. It comes in a box that is placed flush with the ship side, bolted to the deck and ready to go. No bowsing lines or welded connection points on the ship side are necessary.

Throw overboard liferaftsThrow overboard liferafts are designed to be dropped overboard in theircontainer and inflated in the water.

Self-righting canopied rafts areavailable in four sizes; 25, 51, 101 and 153 persons. Standard canopied rafts are available in eight sizes; 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 35 persons. Open reversible liferafts, for use in sheltered waters are available for: 6, 12, 20, 25, 51, 101 and 153 persons.

Liferafts with capacities of 25 and above can be used as supplementary liferafts to all VIKING marineevacuation systems.

VIKING Evacuation Chute (VEC)The telescopic nature of the evacuation chute reinforced with aramid ensures a safe descent path and compensates for ship and sea movements so that evacuation is not obstructed. This system has the additional advantage of protecting evacuees from environmental hazards such as severe weather conditions during evacuation and is fitted with a protective cover.

The system has two or three pre-incorporated 101 person liferafts for ease of operation.

It is designed for installation heights of 5-20 m and has an evacuation capacity of 565 people in 30 minutes.

VIKING Evacuation Mini Slide (VEMS)This system is designed for smallvessels operating in any sea condition. It is available with either a 101 personopen reversible liferaft for vesselsoperating in sheltered waters or a SOLAS compliant 101 personself-righting canopied liferaft forvessels operating at sea.

It is packed in a container the size of a standard liferaft container, simple to operate and fully operational within 2 minutes. The VEMS can evacuate 303 people in 17 minutes and 40 seconds and 501 people in 30 minutes.

Direct boarding liferafts (DKS, DKR)Direct boarding liferafts are typically used on-board small passenger ferries. They are available either as open reversible large capacity liferafts or as self-righting canopied liferafts.

Both types are available in 25, 51, 101, and 153 person sizes.

They are mounted on racks on-board the ship and normally released from their cradles with a remote release system. They are then bowsed to the ship for direct evacuation from the deck to the liferaft.

While it may not feel quite right to call passenger evacuation a “numbers game”, we’ve got a few figures that really make a difference when it comes to passenger safety. Like the number 1984, for example. That’s when we were first to introduce a marine evacuation system to the market. Thirty years later, we have over 1,000 systems in operation. That’s more than anyone else - and it represents a wealth of experience.

Then there’s the fact that we’ve got the market’s widest range of choices. From the VAS mini-slide for evacuating up to 153 passengers in 30 minutes right up to our largest MES systems with the highest capacity in the market - 1008 passengers in the same amount of time. That makes us the clear leader in evacuation capacity.

Actually, some of our best numbers are very small. Like the fact that it takes just one crew member and a single button to release our evacuation systems. Or that many of our systems feature zero power supplies, zero bowsing lines and just as few welding connections.

We’re always ready to help you to navigate through our range of 14 different models with countless possible configurations. So why not ask us for the numbers best suited to your needs today?
