Area Meetingsthose Rotarians sponsoring an application for a 501.C.3, Pauladmonishes that you’d better bone up on the application causePaul just might call about the fine details of the request. If he’scranky, he might even toss in a question or two about variableinterval annuities.

– Mark Your Calendar – Time was given tomany concerned Rotarians who provided several opportunities tofill our dull calendars.

9/21. thought you may be interested in visitingthe Olive Drive Church at 6:00 PM for world renown author andspeaker Joel Rosenberg ($10) or perhaps you’d be interested inthe Bakersfield Sister City Evening of Music and Cultural Exchange(for time, location, and tickets – see our President).

10/04 told of a Kern Transportation Foundationevent from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. It wasn’t exactly clear where themeeting will be (per website, DoubleTree); one thing though, youshould drive there.

10/19 reminded us of our own Oktoberfest at theNoble House. With good food and beer, its our big fund raiser. Inaddition to Rotary Idol, Tim was looking forward to getting one ofWyatt’s handlebars for a fund raiser. I got the distinct feeling that ifyou don’t reach into your pocket, a disappointed Tim will reach intoyour socket for money.

10/28 Mr. Biggar shared yet once again that the AmericanCancer Society will be holding its 2006 Barron’s Ball at the Fair-grounds. I believe that Bruce has designs on your money, too.

All year. wearing a snappy shirt and just fromeating quite a plateful (Rotarian Culhane commented), gave us amountain top view or (sierra vista) of the AVID program and theneed for Rotarians to step up again and provide guidance to somegreat kids. Please sign up.

Best I could tell, we then moved into Presidential Recognitions.pushed the ringtone test on his cell phone

whereby his phone rang loudly. Adroitly, Mr. Stinson then said itwas the absent calling, whereby Wyatt reachedfor his holster and promised to fine Rogers severely for such aninterruption. Apparently Big Ben hasn’t lost his post-up touch fromhis basketball glory days at CSUB.

The President then asked the Past President to stand and takethe mike. What followed was a lengthy, cryptic conversationwhereby got a well deserved pat on the back andpoor was somehow compelled to pay $100 for

Bakersfield Life Magazine. Huh?Marshal Earp then called to the micro-

phone and asked him about the article in today’s

Sheryl Barbich presented ournewest memberAn impressive background ofmarketing and advertising and adevout love for his wife were thehallmarks of his bio. Dave seemednice and was glad that the Down-town Rotary accepted him formembership despite some failedattempts with the North and West

Rotary Clubs.

Finally and with a great sigh ofrelief from the audience, thePresident turned the meeting overto Program Chair Tracy Kiser andshe introduced our speaker,

Rachel is theleader of the South of the TracksBaseball league. This presenta-tion was about what makesBakersfield so special, peoplewho care past and present.

Rachel spoke of her meager but happy beginning in our ownCottonwood area. With her wonderful childhood friends (one ofwhich threw rocks at her – she eventually married him!), theystarted the South of the Tracks Baseball leagues for those childrenwho have so little. With help from our own local “Legends of theHeart”, and

to name only a few, this league found a home, found moneyfor equipment, and have served 250 children ages 5-17 each yearfor the past 15 years. Some of the kids who played now come backas coaches. Rachel and her friends and family stress fair play, respect, and patriotism.

The shirt and cap these kids get for joining this league are oftensome of their prized possessions. Sometimes the only new shirtthey have. Baseball gives these kids something positive and fun todo. For many, it’s the only thing they have to look forward to. Butthe league isn’t self sufficient, they have used equipment, limitedstaff, and few resources.

As soon as Rachel sat down, some of today’s“Legends of the Heart” stood up for this noble

then pledged $2000! President Greg assured the nowcrying Rachel that the club would donate at least $5,000 to herbaseball league. Chris Frank, asked that this be taken to the Boardfor an ongoing Bakersfield Rotary project. Rachel was sincerelythankful and touched by this club’s generosity.

What started out a bit shakey ended with the true spirit ofRotary. Hat’s off to the Rotary Club of Bakersfield!

“Wow!!! This is the true spirit of what a great club looks like! It isamazing the grief we get, yet we are still driven by the real focus ofwhat Rotary stands for. We can raise so much in less than 5 min.,where most clubs it takes a season of events to NET 1/4 of that!Truly an amazing club!!!”
