Part 1What is a
Flipped Classroom?
Life in a Flipped Classroom – Chris Smrke – TESL Ottawa Conference 2016
Core Concepts• Not just watching videos or doing work at home• Best use of in-class face time• Decide what you can take out• Increase student autonomy and sense of
accomplishment(Sams & Bergman; Tucker; Lage, Platt, and Treglia)
How I use it
• Create my own videos (More on that in part 2)
• Used in a communicative grammar class• Grammar instruction viewed for homework• Class time used for questions, concerns, and practice

Benefits
• Supports different learning styles
• More natural and authentic listening practice
• Can incorporate elements of the CLB
(i.e. listening and writing competencies assessedby listening to the presentation and taking notes)
• Extra focused speaking practice in class
• Control over the material students are exposed to

Drawbacks
• Non-completion
• Hesitance to ask for clarification
• Students feel overwhelmed
• Learning curve and initial timecommitment by teachers(finding or making your own videos)

Possible Solutions
• Assign concrete tasks (e.g. take notes,
answer questions, etc.)
• Create examples or summaries to assess
comprehension (Don't ask if they
understand, see if they understand)
• Ensure proper level and scaffolding across
videos
• Start small – one video per month

Have a QR code/barcode scanner on your phone?
Check out this useful handout! It assigns a concrete task (copy an example from the video) and then checks comprehension (create your own example).
If you don't have a barcode scanner, type the following link into your web browser (it is case sensitive)

Here's another example of assigning aconcrete task. In this case, the students areasked to listen to the video and put theinformation in a chart.
Now, let's connect it to the CLB.
What skills could this task assess?

Filming Tips
• Practice
• Know your space (and don't leave it)
• Engage with your audience (as if you
are in class)
• Board work (1 board/1 video)
• Use a video editor to trim the beginning
and end (if you don't have a friend
helping you)

Knowing your space will help you stay in the frame and not get cut in half.
