Section 1 Plants and animals both have life cycles. They both grow and change over time. A watermelon starts as a seed. It germinates and grows roots. A vine grows and yellow flowers appear. After insects pollinate the flowers, fruit starts to grow. The fruit grows larger and larger and develops seeds inside. The life cycle begins again when one of those seeds is planted. Section 2 Many animals, such as humans and dogs, simply grow as they get older. However, some animals go through a big change as they grow called metamorphosis. For example, tadpoles change into an adult frog over time. A tadpole loses its tail and grows four legs. That’s a big change! Section 3 Most insects, like butterflies, go through complete metamorphosis, which has 4 stages. The stages are egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In the larva stage, most look similar to small worms. In the pupa stage, the insect is wrapped in a case and does not move. Section 4 Some insects, like dragonflies and grasshoppers, go through incomplete metamorphosis. Incomplete metamorphosis only has 3 stages: egg, nymph (a smaller version of the adult), and adult. There is no pupa stage during incomplete metamorphosis.
