This theme underscores the importance of placing equity and inclusion at the centre of rebuilding the research and scholarship environment to be open by default. As demonstrated through the pandemic, openness in scholarly research and knowledge sharing are powerful tools that can have wide reaching positive impacts; yet even in places where openness is a core value structural racism and discrimination can disenfranchise minorities from life-saving information.
