Team Notes- Liberty has set program single-season records in the following categories this year: runs scored (338), hits (511), RBI (285), stolen bases (tied - 93), wins (tied - 41), double-digit scoring games (11) and eight-run-rule victories (tied - 12).- Liberty went on a program-record 13-game winning streak, from April 2 through 18. That streak, which included three wins over both Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb, two each over Campbell, Hampton and Virginia, and one victory over Virginia Tech, saw Liberty outscore opponents, 80-6, while tossing nine shutouts. The previous program record, a 12-game winning streak, was set from March 10-21, 2010.- Liberty tossed six straight shutouts, from April 7-14, and also held opponents scoreless for 44 straight innings. Both streaks set new program records.- Liberty pitching went on a 30 1/3 inning scoreless streak, from the third inning of Sun-day’s Big South Championship game, into the 12th inning of Liberty’s 1-0 loss to Ohio.- Liberty Head Coach Dot Richardson earned her 100th career victory, April 11 at Gardner-Webb. She is the third Liberty softball head coach with 100 wins, and first since Paul Wet-more (1994-2013). Wetmore earned his 100th career win on April 18, 1997.- Liberty trailed Longwood, 6-0, entering the bottom of the sixth, on April 26, before tying the score with a six-run sixth and getting a game-winning RBI single from Jasmeen Click in the seventh. It was Liberty’s largest deficit overcome in a win since trailing ETSU, 12-2, in the fourth inning and coming back to win, 14-13, March 5, 2012. It was also Liberty’s fifth walk-off win in Liberty Softball Stadium, and second this season.- The Lady Flames started off the season at 5-0 for the first time since 2006, and tied a program record by winning their first five conference games in a row.- Liberty posted a 16-5 record during the month of April, outscoring opponents, 120-32. - The Lady Flames’ 16 shutouts this season are the second most in program history, and their most since a program-record 20 shutouts in 1999.- Liberty tied the 2016 team for the most conference wins in program history.- The Lady Flames are 17-7 at Liberty Softball Stadium this season, setting a new pro-gram record for home wins. The previous record of 16 was set in 1999 and tied in 2010.- The Lady Flames went 5-1 against ACC opponents, defeating NC State, Syracuse, Vir-ginia (twice) and going 1-1 versus Virginia Tech.- On Feb. 25, Liberty led Florida, 1-0, in the bottom of the ninth, before the Gators rallied to win, 2-1, in 10 innings. That game saw the Lady Flames hold Florida hitless through the first six innings.- Liberty has hit .345 (19-for-55) with the bases loaded, compared to .213 (13-for-61) for the opponents. The Lady Flames hit .336 (187-for-557) with runners in scoring position, while opponents bat .235 (109-for-464) in the same situation.- Liberty has increased its win total every year under fourth-year Head Coach Dot Rich-ardson (11-46, 29-30, 31-28, 41-23). - LU leads the Big South in 11 offensive categories in addition to shutouts and wins.- Liberty hit a season-high seven doubles, March 10 against Rhode Island, its most since hitting a program-record eight doubles versus North Carolina A&T, March 31, 2003.

Liberty vs. 2017 NISC Tournament Field Liberty went 2-1 against Campbell, April 1-2 at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Cam-els scored a walk-off, 5-4 victory on April 1 before Liberty won the next two, 11-1 and 4-3. In the finale, Amber Bishop hit a go-ahead, two-out, two run homer in the seventh. The Lady Flames also faced NISC Championship Round participant Cal Poly on Feb. 19 at the Mary Nutter Classic. Amber Bishop homered off of four-time NFCA All-Region pitcher Sierra Hyland, before the Mustangs rallied to win, 9-2. Liberty also faced seven teams who qualified for the NCAA Softball Championship, including national seeds Florida (No. 1), UCLA (No. 5), Auburn (No. 7) and Tennessee (No. 8).

Conference Regular-Season Champs Liberty earned its fourth ever Big South regular-season softball title, and second out-right. The Lady Flames also won the Big South regular-season championship in 1999 (tied with East Carolina), 2000 and 2007 (tied with Winthrop). In conference play, Liberty led the Big South with a .326 batting average and 33 steals. The Lady Flames’ staff paced the conference with seven shutouts in league games.

A Stadium You Need to Visit Liberty Softball Stadium was listed by NCAA.com in its recent article, “College Soft-ball: 7 Stadiums You Need to Visit.” Liberty is the only school to have both its baseball and softball stadiums recognized by NCAA.com last week.

Liberty Softball Stadium Named No. 6 College Softball Stadium Through a fan vote conducted by FloSoftball.com, Liberty Softball Stadium was voted the sixth best college softball stadium in the nation in 2017. Louisiana Lafayette’s Lamson Park was voted No. 1. Last year, Liberty Softball Stadium appeared second on the list, trailing only LSU’s Tiger Park.

Stadium Dedication Liberty officially dedicated its new facility prior to the Lady Flames’ doubleheader against Presbyterian on April 3, 2015. A pregame ceremony took place, as former Liberty head coach Paul Wetmore provided the invocation. Liberty President Jerry Falwell, along with current head coach Dot Richardson, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Becki Falwell and Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber were also a part of the ceremony. The highlight of the pre-game ceremony was the announcement of naming rights of the field, which will now be called Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium. Dwayne Kamphuis, a financial supporter of Liberty University and the softball pro-gram, is a legendary fast pitch softball pitcher. Kamphuis traveled the world playing in exhibition softball games as part of the renowned “King and His Court” team, headed up by Eddie “The King” Feigner.

Opening Games Liberty posted a 3-2 record at the Liberty Softball Classic, March 19-21, 2015. The Lady Flames opened their new Liberty Softball Stadium with a 9-2 win over Rider on March 19, and picked up wins over Princeton and Quinnipiac as well.

Firsts for All During the first game in Liberty Softball Stadium history, March 19, 2015 against Rider, Megan Robinson recorded the first hit, Madison Kotchey the first double and RBI, Mickey Loveridge the first triple, Tori Zavodny the first stolen base and home run and Chandler Ball the first pitch, strikeout and first victory. Extra, Extra Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 5-4 in 10 innings on April 18, 2015 the first extra-inning game in Liberty Softball Stadium history. The Lady Flames are 3-2 in extra-inning contests at Liberty Softball Stadium.

Lights, Camera, Action The new stadium is equipped with the latest technology, making it ready for televi-sion broadcasts. A majority of Liberty’s home games are scheduled to air either as full TV broadcasts and/or as live video webstreams. With home and visting radio booths avail-able, most home games will air on 90.9 FM The Light as well.

Bring on the Awards Liberty received a conference-record 17 postseason awards on May 9, including four players each on the Big South All-Conference first team, second team and all-freshman team. The Lady Flames had four major awards as well. Dot Richardson was named Big South Coach of the Year for the first time. She is the first Liberty coach to receive the award since Paul Wetmore in 2000. Julia DiMartino becomes the second Big South Pitcher of the Year in program history, joining Tiffani Smith (2010). Amber Bishop is the fifth Liberty player to be voted Big South Freshman of the Year, and first since current teammate Alexia Taylor in 2015. Kenzie Friesen is the second Big South Scholar-Athlete in program history, joining Megan Robinson (2015). First-team selection Tori Zavodny is the seventh player in program history to receive three all-conference honors, and first since her older sister, Katie (2012-14). DiMartino is just the second player in program history to earn all-conference first team honors as both a freshman and a sophomore, joining Stacy Radulovich (1996-97). The Bishop twins, Amber and Autumn, are the second and third Liberty position play-ers to be named first team all-conference as freshmen, joining Radulovich (1996). DiMartino and Friesen are the second pair of Liberty pitchers to be named to the All-Big South team in the same year, after Tiffani Smith and Kat Johnson in 2010.

Regional Recognition Liberty placed a program-record four players on the NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, announced on Thursday. Freshman Autumn Bishop earned first-team mention as utility/non-pitcher, while sophomore pitcher Julia DiMartino and junior outfielder Tori Zavodny were voted to the second team. Freshman second baseman Amber Bishop was tabbed to the third team. The 2013 season marked the last time that Liberty was represented on the All-Region Team, as Katie Zavodny earned first-team mention and Sammi Shivock was named to the second team.

What a Blast! Amber Bishop hit a game-winning home run in the seventh inning during an April 2 series finale at Campbell. With the Lady Flames trailing, 3-2, she hit a two-out, two-run homer which gave Liberty a 4-3 victory and 2-1 series win over the Camels.

Walk (Off) This Way Current Lady Flames Cassie Gingerich (April 18, 2015 vs. Coastal Carolina), Deidra See (April 23, 2016 vs. CSU), Emily Sweat (March 25, 2017 vs. Radford) and Jasmeen Click (April 26, 2017 vs. Longwood) all have recorded a walk-off hit in their career.

First Things First During the season opener against Chattanooga, Feb. 10, Amber Bishop hit a double in her first collegiate at bat, while Kayla Harris singled in her first at bat. They are the first Lady Flames since Kelby Allen in 2012 to record a hit in their first collegiate at bat. Additionally, Elizabeth Engler became the first Liberty freshman since Katie Phillips in 1996 to win each of her first two career starts.

Family Matters Freshmen Amber and Autumn Bishop are twin sisters. They are the first sisters to play for the Liberty softball team during the same year since Claire and Michelle Fridey in 2007. Sophomore pitcher Chase Cassady, last season’s opening-day starter in the circle, is the younger sister of current Liberty assistant coach Paige Cassady. Their father, John Cassady, is on staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Sophomore pitcher Julia DiMartino was named the 2017 Big South Pitcher of the Year. Her older sister, Alyssa DiMartino, pitched for the Lady Flames from 2011-14, serv-ing as Liberty’s opening-game starter in both 2012 and 2014. Junior outfielder Tori Zavodny, a three-time all-conference outfielder, is the younger sister of Katie Zavodny, who was a 2013 NFCA All-Region outfielder and holds Liberty’s records for career and single-season stolen bases. Junior Madi Clarke’s father, David Clarke, played baseball at Liberty from 1986-1989. In fact, David Clarke played his home games at Worthington Stadium, the same site where Liberty Softball Stadium now sits.
