422 career victories. Eleven consecutive 30-win seasons. Thirty-four players who have earned a total of 54 all-conference honors. Seventeen NCAA Regional appearances as either a head coach, assistant coach or player. By any measure, Kelly Kovach Schoenly is a winner and through seven seasons leading Ohio State, she has the Buckeyes positioned to write the next chapter in its storied history. In her seven seasons in Columbus, Schoenly’s teams have won 234 games, including 17 over teams ranked in the Top 25. Twenty-one of her players have earned All-Big Ten or NFCA All-Midwest Region honors. And just as important, the Buckeyes are excelling in the classroom. In 2014, five players garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the most of any softball program in the conference. The Buckeyes also had four student-athletes receive Distinguished Scholar laurels in 2018 and 2019. The 2019 season marked Ohio State’s fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the longest streak in program history. The Buckeyes posted 17 wins in Big Ten play, the most under Schoenly and since the 1994 campaign. Schoenly coached seven players to a total of 14 postseason accolades, including All-Americans Lilli Piper and Emily Clark. In the circle, her pitching staff threw three no-hitters, the most since the 2007 season. In the classroom, 13 student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, which tied for the most amongst the 14 conference softball programs. In 2018, the Buckeyes tallied 36 wins, the most in a season since 2010 and during Schoenly’s tenure. She had five Buckeyes earn All-Big Ten honors and four receive NFCA All-Region recognition. The Buckeyes had four players notch Big Ten Distinguished Scholar

accolades for their academic excellence. Schoenly spent six seasons as head coach at Miami (Ohio) and was the program’s all-time winningest coach with 188 career victories, leading the RedHawks to their first MAC Tournament title in 2009 before winning again in 2012. Schoenly also led the team to two NCAA Tournament berths in both 2009 and 2012, respectively. Prior to her stint at Miami, Schoenly was an assistant coach at Penn State (1998-2006) for eight seasons and helped guide the Nittany Lions to seven Big Ten Tournament appearances and six NCAA Tournament berths. Before her time in State College, Schoenly was an assistant at her alma mater, Michigan, for three years (1996-98), helping the squad reach the NCAA Women’s College World Series three consecutive times. A two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and three-time all-conference selection, Schoenly was a member of three Big Ten Conference Championship teams and played on the 1995 squad, which finished seventh at the NCAA Women’s College World Series. A two-time GTE Academic All-American, Schoenly received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Michigan in December of 1995. After receiving the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Schoenly went on to earn her master’s degree in elementary mathematics education from Michigan in May of 1998. Jen McIntyre was named associate head coach for the Ohio State softball program in July 2019. McIntyre spent the last five seasons as the head coach at the University of Connecticut.

While at the helm for the Huskies, McIntyre took the program from the bottom of the Big East Conference to a contender in the American Ath-letic Conference. She coached her 2019 UConn team to its best season since joining the AAC. The Huskies tallied eight wins in conference play, the most in program history, and totaled 20 overall victories for the sec-ond consecutive season. McIntyre guided five players to All-AAC honors, the most during her tenure and in program history, and had seven total AAC weekly award recognitions.

Prior to the breakout season in 2019, the Huskies won 20 games with a young team in 2018 under McIntyre – one that included six freshmen and eight sophomore players. It was the first 20-win campaign for UConn with McIntyre’s guidance and the program’s first since 2013. The Huskies played 26 games against RPI Top 75 teams, as part of a strength of schedule ranked No. 54 in all of Division I.

McIntyre has been part of coaching staffs that have made seven NCAA Tournament appearances since 2001. She served as the associate head coach at Boston University for the 2014 campaign. With McIntyre’s help, the Terriers won the Patriot League tournament and qualified for the NCAA regionals. Her peers recognized her efforts by selecting her as the 2014 NFCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.

McIntyre joined the Terriers after spending 12 years (2002-13) on the Penn State coaching staff, including her final three as the associate head coach. During her tenure, the Nittany Lions reached six NCAA tourna-ments, highlighted by a regional final appearance in 2011.

Twenty-one of McIntyre’s recruits at Penn State were named to All-Big Ten teams 33 times, while seven were placed on All-Region squads with three becoming NFCA All-Americans. In 2013, senior outfielder Cas-sidy Bell became PSU’s first-ever First Team All-American after batting a program-record .456 at the plate and smashing 20 home runs.

McIntyre spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons at Indiana as the second assistant coach. During her time in Bloomington, three players earned All-Big Ten honors.

A 1998 graduate of Penn State with a degree in kinesiology, McIntyre was the starting third baseman for the Nittany Lions from 1995-98. A 1997 CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-America selection, she ranks sixth all-time with 42 career stolen bases. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten selec-tion was voted team MVP as a junior and team captain as a senior.

Jordan Clark finished her first season as an assistant coach with the Buckeye softball program in 2019. Clark joined the staff in July 2018 after spending three seasons at Arkansas as a volunteer assistant coach.

During her first year in Columbus, Clark primarily worked with the infield, outfield and slappers. The Buckeyes turned 29 double plays and had a .967 fielding percentage under her guidance, both improvements from the previous season. She helped lefty slapper Bri Betschel earn NFCA third team All-Midwest Region and second team All-Big Ten honors after increasing her batting average by over 100 points.

Clark helped the Razorbacks to consecutive trips to the NCAA Tourna-ment in 2017 and 2018, including the Super Regionals this past season. She was part of a staff that was named the 2018 NFCA Division I South Region Staff of the Year after leading the squad to 42 wins, the third most in program history. The 2018 Razorbacks finished the season with a 27-2 record on their home field, a new record for home wins in a single season. During her time in Fayetteville, Clark served as the first-base coach while working directly with Arkansas’ outfielders and the team’s base running.

Clark’s addition is a reunion of sorts seeing as she was a four-year stand-out at Miami (OH) under Schoenly from 2009-12. She finished her playing career with top-five program rankings in at-bats, runs, hits and walks. She was a two-year team captain, two-time Mid-American Conference per-former and the 2012 recipient of the MAC’s Nan Harvey Sportsmanship Award. Clark helped Miami to a pair of MAC Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths both in 2009 and 2012.

Prior to her time at Arkansas, Clark spent two years as an instructor with Diamond Athletics. In the role, she provided one-on-one lessons and organized skills clinics. Clark was also a coach in the Desoto County School District. She also has past experience in travel ball as a co-head coach for the 14U softball team within the New Jersey Intensity program.

Cammi Prantl, a 2016 graduate of Ohio State and former outfielder/catcher for the Buckeyes, was hired as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2020 season.

Prantl was a four-year starter for the Buckeyes and three-time All-Big Ten performer. She never batted lower than .329 in a season and broke Ohio State’s all-time hits (247) and doubles (64) records as a senior. The Ashville, Ohio native became the 11th All-American in program history in her final year with her selection to the NFCA third team.

Prantl helped the Buckeyes go 34-20-1 and earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2016, the first of Schoenly’s four appearances while at the helm for Ohio State.

Home plate remains where it has rested at Buckeye Field since 1988, but little else remains the same for the Ohio State softball complex after $5.9 million of stadium renovations. The historical and record-breaking 2009 season marked the first in the 1,500-seat New Buckeye Field - a facility that is undoubtedly among the finest in the country.

In addition to nearly doubling Buckeye Field’s previous capacity of 800, the new stadium includes indoor and outdoor batting cages, a three-plate bullpen, a 650-square foot press box, player clubhouse and locker room, new dugouts, coaches and umpires dressing room and concession areas.

Dedicated April 11, 2009, with the game against Illinois, Buckeye Field quickly became the site of some record-breaking crowds. Some 1,277 fans watched Ohio State defeat the Illini 5-0 after a pregame ceremony that honored the donors, administrators and construction entities that made the building possible.

The field dimensions will remain 190 feet down the left and right field lines and 220 feet to center field. The Kentucky bluegrass and Perennial Rye make Buckeye Field a player-friendly surface.

NOTABLE GAMES IN BUCKEYE FIELD HISTORY April 9, 2017: A single-game record crowd of 1,836 fans filled the stadium to see the Buckeyes blank Michigan, 5-0. The win snapped Michigan’s 14-game winning streak. The 4,979 fans that attended April 8-9 for the Michigan series was the highest attended series in school history.

April 24, 2016: A then-record crowd of 1,627 watched the Buckeyes erase a three-run seventh inning deficit by scoring four times in their final at-bat to secure a 5-4 win over Purdue.

May 7, 2015: In their opening game of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes scored a program-record 24 runs while Erika Leonard went four-for-four with a pair of grand slams and 10 RBI.

May 12, 2007: Ohio State won the program first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship with a 2-1 walk-off win over sixth-ranked Northwestern. Megan Schwab scored the winning run when an errant thrown for NU third baseman Darcy Sengewald sailed high to first base. OSU clinched the Big Ten’s regular season title just a week earlier with a 4-0 shutout of Penn State.

May 15, 2010: A then-record crowd of 1,623 watched as Ohio State rolled to a 16-0 run-rule victory over Northwestern on the strength of nine combined RBI from Alicia Herron and Whitney Cooper. The win gave the Buckeyes a 16-2 Big Ten record, its second 16-win conference season in the last four years.

April 11, 2009: Alicia Herron hit a three-run home run and Kim Reeder pitched a three-hitter as the Buckeyes dedicated the new Buckeye Field with a 5-0 win over Illinois. Over 1,200 fans packed the new stadium, which has just recently completed a major upgrade to include a new press box, concessions stands, locker rooms and indoor hitting facility.

ABOUT THE CHARITY CLASSIC• Over the last 19 years, the OCCC has raised over $250,000, making it

one of the largest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness month in central Ohio.

• In 2019, a total of 25 teams participated in the event from Ohio and neighboring states, the most ever.

• Admission to the games is free, while entrance to the OCCC is a $5 donation with all proceeds benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund.

ABOUT THE SPIELMAN FUND AND THE OSUCCC-JAMES• The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research is devoted to

advancing research in breast cancer. One hundred percent of every gift to the fund goes directly to research at Ohio State’s Comprehen-sive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James).

• In June 2014, the fund reached $15.4 million in contributions.• The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is the

patient-care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. The James is the largest cancer hospital in the Mid-west and the third largest in the nation. It consists of over 300 cancer researchers.

Since the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) was founded in 1998, thou-sands of individuals, companies and charitable foundations have entrusted their philanthropic dollars to the fund.

From day one, the Spielman Fund has made good on its promise to do-nors through smart fiscal management and a prudent spending plan that ensures funds are allocated where they are needed most. When donors designate their charitable contribution to the Spielman Fund, they can trust that their gift—along with the generosity of others who share their desire to help find a cure for breast cancer—will make an important and strategic impact.

Made up of an endowment and current use fund, the Spielman Fund has been engineered to guarantee that both the long-term vision and current needs in breast cancer research have been well accounted for. The fund’s investment approval team includes OSUCCC Director and James CEO Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, OSUCCC-James Senior Executive Director for Administration Jeff Walker, and Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center Director William Farrar, MD—as well as Chris Spielman.

The majority of donations made to the Spielman Fund are designated as current use gifts—meaning they are to be spent in full rather than invested for the long term. The total amount of current use giving fluctuates each year but has averaged approximately $2.25 million in recent years. The current use portion of the Spielman Fund connects the OSUCCC – James team of physicians and experts to vital research dollars meant to rapidly advance promising science.

Investments made by the fund have enabled Ching-Shih Chen, PhD, to study novel therapeutic agents that selectively target metabolic and sur-vival machineries in breast cancer cells; Sarmila Majumder, PhD, to explore the emerging role of microRNAs in drug-resistant breast cancer; creation of a designated fellowship in breast cancer research; and more. And, ac-cording to OSUCCC – James Executive Director of Development Jennifer McDonald, current use dollars may soon create a new multi-investigator grant opportunity that will connect OSUCCC – James researchers to those at other institutions doing novel work. “One of the ways we’re going to beat breast cancer is by collaborating with other institutions across the country,” says McDonald. “This grant, similar to an R01 grant from the National Insti-tutes of Health (NIH), would provide seed funding for investigators to prove that their work has merit and is worthy of additional funding from NIH or the National Cancer Institute.

“‘With each year, each month, and each day there are new breakthroughs and possibilities in the fight against cancer.’ Those were my wife, Stefanie’s, words and they have given me the strength and determination to carry on her dream of ending the terrible disease. I am grateful to each and every one of you for joining me in the continuing Stefanie’s legacy of hope. I am thrilled to announce that Spielman Fund reached $15.4 million in 2014. This is an outstanding achievement and it is because of generous support that we have reached this milestones.

Fortunately, I have been part of many great teams during my life and I am humbled to be a part of a team that will one day find a cure for cancer.”
