Director’s Message I am immensely proud and glad to present to you the sixth edition of LIBA’S Business Ethics Conference “BEACON 2012”. Realizing the need of the hour, BEACON’S this year’s theme Eco-Innovation: Time to Wake Up!” explores the prospect of sustainability shaking hands with competitiveness. Despite the promise of eco-innovations, the term is used in diverse contexts with different underlying connotations that diminish its practical value. The nature and scale of present-day environmental problems and the urgency for change has led to increasing application of eco-innovation in both environmental management and policies. Richly imbued with ennobling values of the Society of Jesus, soaked in the upward spiraling educational tradition for nearly half a millennium and dedicated to form personalities and not just managers, LIBA has always been an advocate of a just, humane and sustainable world. Students here develop a strong acumen in the global market at the same time remain committed to a strong ethical foundation in the corporate world. Time and again, several initiatives have been taken up by the students of the college. This year, as a part of BEACON, our students planted 84 saplings that also stand as a promise for a better tomorrow.

Director’s Message

I am immensely proud and glad to present to you the sixth edition of LIBA’S Business Ethics

Conference “BEACON 2012”. Realizing the need of the hour, BEACON’S this year’s theme

“Eco-Innovation: Time to Wake Up!” explores the prospect of sustainability shaking hands

with competitiveness. Despite the promise of eco-innovations, the term is used in diverse

contexts with different underlying connotations that diminish its practical value. The nature

and scale of present-day environmental problems and the urgency for change has led to

increasing application of eco-innovation in both environmental management and policies.

Richly imbued with ennobling values of the Society of Jesus, soaked in the upward spiraling

educational tradition for nearly half a millennium and dedicated to form personalities and not

just managers, LIBA has always been an advocate of a just, humane and sustainable world.

Students here develop a strong acumen in the global market at the same time remain

committed to a strong ethical foundation in the corporate world. Time and again, several

initiatives have been taken up by the students of the college. This year, as a part of BEACON,

our students planted 84 saplings that also stand as a promise for a better tomorrow.

From 2007, BEACON has been deliberating on various issues including inclusive growth and

sustainability in all spheres of management. I invite you to deliberate, discuss and debate on

Eco-Innovation keeping in mind the diverse and dynamic spheres within the context of

business today.

With Best Wishes,

Fr. Christie SJ, Ph.D.Director

LIBA BEACON 2012Eco-Innovation-Time to wake up

The Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius’ presage of human activities hampering the way in

which the sun interacts with the earth, leading to global warming and climate change, has

come true and the past few decades have seen an increase in environmental issues like ozone

layer depletion, loss of biodiversity and global warming.

BEACON ’12 the sixth edition of the LIBA BEACON series draws attention to

environmental problems facing the country and the pressing need to augment investment,

development and diffusion of eco-friendly technologies.

Emerging economies such as India have their unique set of environmental problems; some are

exacerbated by the growth of economic activity while others are due to lack of economic

development. Poverty further aggravates the problems along with dense populations and

limited resources. Consumers and companies alike have developed a sense of responsibility to

the environment over the years. Eco-innovation boosts economic growth whilst protecting the

environment. The latest developments in corporate policies are proof of a paradigm shift

towards sustainability. Public policy too can play a vital role in furthering this cause.

Understanding the current state of the environment, the crises that lay ahead, the current best

case practices and emerging solutions to environmental issues are some of the topics that will

be discussed and debated at BEACON 2012. Recognizing eco-innovation as the need of the

hour, BEACON 2012 promises to be an exciting conference that will deliberate over current

and future environmental challenges, solutions and sustainability.

Mr. Rajendra Singh

'Water man of Rajasthan'

Rajendra Singh, is a winner of 2001 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community leadership. He leads an organization, Tarun Bhagat Sangh, which is supported by the United Nations, USIAD, and the World Bank. He is popularly known as the 'Jal Purush' or the 'Water man of Rajasthan'

Since 1985, Tarun Bhagat Sangh, headed by Rajendra Singh have been working in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, focusing on the revival of Johads, streams and rivers in the area. And with the successful implementation of the program, today more than 4,500 working Johads dot Alwar and surrounding districts. (Johad is concave structure which collects and store water throughout the year. It is used for the drinking purpose by humans and cattle).

Above all what is really commendable is that they work for the revitalization of the five rivers that went dry for the long time. River Ruparel, that went dead, has started flowing again after the span of three decades. Even the Arvari River basin, which was once barren, became a water source. On the other sides rejuvenation of the traditional water harvesting structures on such a large scale is a positive indication of development in the state. In many villages people have started building Johads of their own. Now the women need not to travel to the faraway places to collect water, fuel wood and fodder. They educated the mind of the people and made them understand the importance of water conservation

Rajendra Singh plans to cover more of 45 villages in the next one year. He has also decided to take up the project of river Luni, the only flowing water source in western parts of Rajasthan. The condition of the river is getting worst with the day by day increasing pollution from the numerous textile units Pali.

Organization of Rajendra Singh has overall 45 full time employees and 230 part time workers. He is a charismatic personality and the real hero of poor. Until 1984, he knew nothing about the water and its conservation methods. It were the villagers who showed me the value of water, and till date The work done by the Rajendra Singh is an inspiration for the million others in the nation.
