The NUST Olympiad
Introduction to the Idea
This April, the National University of Science & Technology comes together to create a
mega-event like Pakistan has never seen before. With the largest and most diverse student
body in one location, NUST offers a truly unique experience – representatives from all over the
country, brought together for a common purpose – to truly unleash their potential. With over
fifteen events spanning four days, the Olympiad allows ample opportunity for students to
explore their talents, trying their hand at photography, video-graphy, debate, dramatics, etc.
We seek to provide an environment to nurture and encourage talent, wow the senses, and
leave a lasting impression.
NUST Olympiad 2013 was planned to bring together the central societies of NUST on a single
platform. They will collaborate to make this event a never-before-seen amalgamation of over
twenty unique activities.

Islamabad
A warm cup of tea, a gentle cool breeze
grazing past your skin, the pitter patter of
raindrops beginning to land on your window
from the dazzling clouds that seem to change
color every time you look at them. That’s a
normal day in Islamabad, and during the five
days you spend at the NUST Olympiad, you
won’t be able to take your eyes off the city.
Construction began in the 1960’s with
Islamabad now being ranked as a Ga mma
World city. Located ideally between the
foothills of the gorgeous Himalaya mountain
range and Rawal Lake, this scenic and peaceful
city holds a diverse set of natural attributes
that few other cities in Pakistan may boast
about. Sweet water streams riddle the Margalla hills along with its famous trekking tracks. The
hills also happen to house the 82 acre Islamabad Zoo and family recreational area at its very
base. Rawal Lake houses facilities for sports lovers from all ends of the spectrum, with
everything from extreme water sports to
fishing alongside ATV’s and paintballing. No
matter what your taste, Islamabad is sure to
deliver.
Home to Presidency, the Prime Minister’s
Secretariat, the Supreme Court of Pakistan
and Saidpur Village, the capital holds a vast
array of architecture spanning from modern
Islamic, traditional Sub continental to British
Colonial. The proud home of the Faisal
Mosque, a wonder of architecture ranked the
6th largest mosque in the entire world, the
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
Capital pays homage to the nations’ history with the Pakistan monument which is a must visit
when in the city. Housing various technological parks, the headquarters of all major comm-
unication operators, the major top ranked universities of the country and the third largest stock
exchange and airport in the nation,
The city is second to none in terms of
technological advancement mixed with
the warmth and courtesy that is inherent
to Pakistanis, making every time you visit,
seem like you’re coming home. The
sprawling NUST campus is situated just
minutes away from all these sights, and
touring the city is encouraged.
The armies of Alexander the Great,
Genghis Khan, Tamerlane and Ahmad
Shah Durrani all passed through the area
leaving behind their traces on their
conquests of the Indian Subcontinent.
Forts, temples, pagodas and shrines are located all over the plateau within driving range, the
historical richness of the city and its outskirts are nothing less than a treasure trove for those
who value history. Last controlled by the British who made Asia’s largest cantonment in the
region before Pakistan gained its independence, tinges of British architecture may easily be
seen in the twin city of Rawalpindi, located at a 15 minute drive away from the capital.

and Technology (NUST) are second to none

Located near the heart of the capital, the main campus in Islamabad is one of the most scenic
advanced smart campus’ in the country. With

a projector with a crowd of roaring fans.

learning management system is for. Sports

With flood lit football grounds, basketball
courts and cricket grounds, you just won’t

tournaments. You’ll find die hard supporters for every department t when it comes to NUST,
with the inter department matches drawing scores of cheering crowds from all over the
campus.
When the sun starts to set, there’s really no place as beautiful as this campus. Sipping a
warm cup of tea while sitting in a gazebo right outside Concordia café gives one a glimpse of
the beauty that the capital is known for. A vignette of colors dashing across the sky, trying to
complete their short lived existence, disappearing as the sun sets further behind the horizon.
Cornered on one side by the footsteps of the Himalayas and on the other by a lake, Islamabad
sights are well within a driving time of no more than thirty minutes from campus.

3V3 BASKETBALL- It’s not how big you are, it’s how big you play!
An American basketball coach said, “You
don’t play against the opponents, you play
against the game of basketball.”
Only a good basketball player could
assimilate this quote. They know how intense
it could get. In other words, when the game
reaches at climax, it isn’t less than war minus
the shooting. They say winning isn't
everything, then why do they keep score?
If you want to know the answer, NUST

3D MODEL
Are you an enthusiast of 3D modeling or you are
having futuristic & innovative architectural ideas?
Come, join us & participate in 3D MODEL, a part of
NUST Olympiad. Express your skills, concepts, ideas
& “look beyond what you see”
Objective:
The event would focus on providing the
participants an opportunity to demonstrate their
scientific skills at a practical level as well as test their
abilities to design and create. The competition
consists of two rounds:
In round 1, teams are to focus more on the
maximum possible detailing they can do in
their models.
In round 2 teams are to work on the best
possible way of executing their ideas into
reality.
Approach - “look beyond what you see”
The idea is to NOT replicate the buildings the way they are but provide the participants with a
chance to go as wild with their imaginations as they want to.
NUST’s Buildings under consideration:
RIMMS, IGIS, SADA, IESE, CONCORDIA, HOSTEL BLOCK
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
First Half:
The participants will be provided with the scaled down one line plans of the buildings.
The venue of the competition will be the area where the participants get the views of all the
mentioned buildings, the teams will be required to construct a part of their models through the
buildings’ angle exposed to them. The teams will also be provided with the perspective images
of their respective buildings exposing the portion visible from the venue. This would assist them
during their model making. Through these images the teams will be required to complete half
of their models.
Second Half:
In the second half the teams will then be asked to complete the rest of their building
the way they visualize them, in order words, looking beyond what’s actually exposed in front of
them. This will not completely bound the teams to replicate the buildings as they are but will
provide them with an opportunity to test their creative skills and come up with wild and
amazing ideas of how they perceive the rest of the building inside their heads. However, the
other half should create a connection with the actual building somehow (whose perspective
image would be provided to them) so that it won’t be completely out of the bounds.
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
The designs have to be rational with a valid reason why the teams have designed the other half
in the manner they have done. The will be asked to submit a short write up supporting their
achieved forms.
Grouping:
6 buildings have been selected so 5 teams will be provided with similar plans and will be
working on one building. The teams can therefore be piled up in six groups. One group with 6
different plans, so that in a group each team will be working on a different building.
Rounds:
Regarding round details, as we will be demanding the teams to work on their artistic skills too
so we can divide the event into two rounds.
Round 1: Completion of half of the model through the perspective images provided to
them.
Round 2: Completion of rest of the model through their imagination but in relation to
half of the model they would have already created by then.
Judgment Criteria:
Judgment criteria should be based on:
Completion percentage
Neatness
Strength of the model
Creativity (in implementation of ideas)
Material diversity (while keeping in mind every material’s constraints)
How the two building halves visually communicate with each other as a whole.
The submitted write up (presenting the team’s point of view)

Chess Championship
In chess everything rests on tactics. If one thinks
of strategy as a block of marble, then tactics are
the chisel with which a master operates, in
creating works of chess art. - Tigran Petrosian
Do you think you have that strategically
innovative mind to pull out the best tactics in
chess play? Do you believe that your intuition can
lead you to be the survivor among the finest
ploys? Then gather around the thrilling platform
of NUST Olympiad 2013 to question your strategic
abilities and employ your schematic skills to stand
among the achievers at Chess Championship.
Feel the heat and excitement of battle closing in,
because this April at NUST Olympiad the conquest
awaits the power of your mind magic!
The event is basically a chess competition.
Participants will have to compete against each
other. The one who competes successfully
through the 2-Day quest of conquer, wins the
throne!
Day 1:
The participants will be divided into teams of two by the organizers on random basis for
matches. The competitors will play the chess as per rules.
Day 2:
The winners from first day matches will compete with each other the next day (semi-finals). The
winners from semi-finals will then play the final round.
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
Each game will be supervised by an organizer. External judges will be present to solve
any technical problems that may arise.
Rules:
Every game will be timed (1-1:30 minute per move).
It is mandatory to move the touched piece.
Winner gets 1 point and draw (stalemate) gets 1/2 points.
Every match will be refereed and his decision will be final.
Participants have to reach in time otherwise walkover will be given to the other
opponent.
When the allotted time for a game is over , the final decision about the winner will be
based on current winning participant at that time

Design & Glide
Design and Glide gives you an opportunity to design
your own glider which will compete against gliders
designed by students from various universities. The
judgment criteria includes flight time, following the
design parameters and the distance travelled
(horizontal range) of your glider. The equipment will
be provided to you by the Nust Science Society. The
aerodynamics and compactness of your design will
put your team in a winning position.
Event Plan:
Each Team will consist of 4 members. Teams will be
given 40 minutes in the start to make a plan. The plan
will consist of a neat diagram and all the
specifications of their glider like the stabilizer and
wings length and surface area of stabilizer
The formula for calculating surface area for horizontal
stabilizer is as follows:
Stabilizer surface area = 1.2 * wing surface area *chord area / distance from center of gravity
Wing surface area is calculated by multiplying length and width of the wing ,chord area is the
total length of glider (from front end to rear end), center of gravity is found by locating point of
intersection of medians but here we will assume the center of gravity to be any point on the
fuselage
TIP1:
Reduce the chord length and increase wing span for better and compact glider that will fly a
longer distance
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
TIP2:
Centre of gravity is about quarter of chord length away from the stabilizer
Your Glider is supposed to be look like somewhat like the blueprints below:
After the allocated 40 minutes, teams will submit their plans and start making the practical
models they will be given 2 hours and 20 minutes to make their desired gliders. After their
completion we will set up a course with targets that gliders will have to hit aerially. Each team
will be given 3 tries to hit our targets. The targets would be balloons filled with helium gas that
rise up and will be attached to strings of different lengths.
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
Judging Criterion:
Judgment will be done on the basis of following equation
S= 0.3c + 0.3d + 0.4t
Where:
S=score obtained
c=calculations (based on aerodynamics)
d=distance covered
t=time of flight
The glider after completion shall look something like below:

nation’s hope – take it in any direction you like! So, who are you?
2. Syaasi Shor

graffitilegally on the streets, why not use this chance? Give out your message to anyone, the
youth, the politicians, the world – ANYONE. Tell them what you want to. Tell them a way
out, tell them something they need to know. Be loud, be bold, be truthful, who knows,
you might strike a difference to someone!
Choose your topic and pick 6 colors according to your design. Register those to us with your
names - You’ll have the sprays at your boards on the competition.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Its okay if you don’t fill up the board, it’s great if you do! BUT, it is mandatory for you to
submit your rough sketches, drafts or any material that shows your thought process-
You will be judged for:
Relevance with the topic
Content The subjects, the colors, the flow, the composition.
Creativity Your attention to detail. Your approach to the topic.
Neatness Yeah we know art can be distorted forms, if you do that, make sure it shows
that it was intended – don’t tell us how a random splash was a part of the design

You will have ample to paint. Any abusive, obnoxious content is strictly prohibited! Be there on
time, the whole team must participate. And that is all hope you make it to the top three! Good

A total of 5 members are allowed per team.
The system will be KNOCKOUT throughout the event i.e. team winning all the matches
wins the event.
A player is out and must leave the field if a paintball breaks on him or he calls himself
out for any reason.
If a player is carrying the flag when he is hit, he must immediately drop it.
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
A team may not move their own flag unless an opposing player has first moved their flag
and is eliminated, and then the team may return the flag to its starting position if they
desire.
A team wins by eliminating all the players of the opposing team or capturing the
opposing team's flag and returning it to their own base.
Each individual will be allowed a maximum of 30 bullets.
Depending on the number of teams registered in this event, the draws will be made on
random basis between two teams.
A referee will be present at the setup, who will monitor the game throughout the event.
RULES & GUIDELINES
A brief on the rules and guidelines will also be given by the management and referees from
‘Battlefield Islamabad’ team. Few general rules are:
1. Starting of the Game
The game will start when both teams are set at their respective bases. One team calls out that they are ready, the other team responds that they are also ready, and then the first team calls "Game On" and the game begins.
2. Hits
A player is hit if a paintball leaves a solid, nickel-sized mark anywhere on the player's body or equipment. Some variations of paintball don't count gun hits or require multiple hits on the arms or legs. Splatter often occurs when a paintball does not break on a person but on a nearby surface and then paint bounces onto the player, but this does not count as a hit unless it forms a solid mark on the player.
3. Paint Checks If you think you might have been hit but can't tell for sure (such as if your back was hit, but you can't tell if the ball broke), you can call a paint check. Shout "Paint Check" and the closest player to you (on your team or the other team) will come and check you. If you arehit, you will then exit the field, otherwise everyone returns to their previous position and the game is resumed when the player who initiated the paint check shouts "Game On!".
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
4. Walking Off the Field
When a player is hit, they must then raise their gun over their head, shout that they are hit, and then quickly leave the field to the dead area. Be sure to keep your gun over your head and to shout that you are hit whenever you come across new players.
5. Victory
When one team has completed the necessary objectives, all players still on the field should be notified. Do not remove masks until barrel plugs or barrel covers have been placed on all loaded guns.
6. Safety Rules
Wear Masks at All Times Do Not Drink and Play No Blind Firing Allow Surrenders Shoot less than 280 FPS Use Barrel Plugs Use Common Sense

verse at the right time in not more than a few
seconds; of handling immense pressure but having

game of wit and speedy recollection.
Event Details

that speaks. Just because you are not a good artist
does not mean you are not an eloquent speaker
either. Join us in the war of verses – ‘Bait Bazi’ – as
students from all over the country compete for
perfection in prose. From the ghazals of Mir and
Ghalib to the inspiring sonnets of Iqbal, come and
prove your mettle amongst hundreds of
aficionados in the arena of poetry. May the best
poet win!
The event consists of 3 rounds: Freestyle, Judges’ Choice and Poet’s rule.

player has to reply with another stanza starting with the last letter of the stanza recited by the
Judge or Organizer.
Judges’ Choice: In this round, the qualified teams will have to recite the stanzas on a specific
topic as specified by the Judges or Event Heads e.g. ‘Azadi’ etc.
NUST Olympiad’13 Liaison Package
Poet’s Rule: In this final round the teams have to recite stanzas of a specific
Humorous Poet e.g. Khalid Masood’ etc.

Rules:
The stanza should be genuine and not your own.
The stanza that has already been used cannot be repeated in the game.
Only one stanza consisting of a Ruba’i or Qit’a is allowed, not the whole Ghazal or Poem.
The team will be disqualified if it does not follow the rules or misbehave and when it
failed to reply to the last letter of the previous team recited stanza.
Failure to respond with proper stanza twice will result in the elimination of that team
from the competition.
Only Two Participants per team are allowed.
The performance should not exceed more than 30 seconds. Points will be deducted
from the total score if the performance exceeds the allotted time.
The teams will be marked on the basis of eloquence, mistakes and pronunciation of the
words.
If the first round between two teams keeps on continuing for about 10 minutes then the
judges will mark the teams according to the mistakes, eloquence and the pronunciation
of the words.
In case of equal scoring of teams by the judges for the elimination part, judges will ask
the respective teams to recite the stanza on a specific poem of judges’ choice.
Misquoting a stanza will lead to the deduction in points.
The Judge’s decision would be final, no changes will be made.
All teams will play the 1st round. Then the teams will be shortlisted for the 2nd round
(consisting of quarter final and semifinals) and then the final or 3rd round will

As the game proceeds, some clues will lead the teams to places where they will have to play
a game to earn 3 ribbons.
Every team will play 3-5 such games before reaching the final clue which will lead them to
the treasure awaiting them thus bringing their quest to an end.
