Essential Question How do we use categories of the senses to organize our thoughts? Materials Copies of graphic organizer Introduction Review the five senses with your students. Talk about descriptive words for each sense. Direct Instruction (I do) 1. Prior to your lesson, print out a copy of the organizer on the next page for each student or prepare a way to post. 2. Introduce the Graphic Organizer and review the categories. Guided Exploration (We do) 1. Use questions to help them understand what to write in each box. For example, if using this sheet with a film, you can ask: What did you see the child do? What did you hear the child say? If you were in the film, what would you have smelled? What did the child taste in the film? What did the child touch or hold in the film? 2. Do one category together. Independent Practice (You do) Give students time to fill out their own organizers. Conclusion Use the graphic organizer to help students write a composition. If you do choose to complete a writing composition, students could write a narrative, a journal entry, etc. Note: You may choose to only have your students discuss their ideas with each other.
