Lesson 5 Solve a Simpler Problem
Lesson Objective The goal for this lesson is to solve problems by using a simpler problem. Introduction The Problem-Solving Model is designed to help solve word problems. There following four steps make up the model:
1. Understand the Problem • What are you asked to find out? • What information is given? • What information is necessary to solve the problem?
2. Make a Plan
• Is there more than one step needed to solve the problems?
• What calculations can be used?
3. Carry Out the Plan • Show all your work.
4. Look Back
• Check if your answer is reasonable. Practice Question How many yellow tiles are there in design 7?

Mathematics Chapter 1: Patterns in Mathematics
Step 1: Understand the problem. I need to determine the number of yellow tiles present in design 7. The number of yellow tiles in designs 1, 2, and 3 are shown on the diagram. I need to look for a pattern to help solve the problem.
Step 2: Make a plan. A pattern rule can be used to help solve the problem.
Step 3: Carry out the plan. Create a table of values and determine the pattern rule.

Step 4: Look back. Use the pattern rule to solve the problem. Number of yellow tiles in design 7 = Number of yellow tiles in design 7 = Number of yellow tiles in design 7 = Number of yellow tiles in design 7 =
