Transcript of Lesson 49
What great blessings does Jesus give us in the Lord’s Supper?
Matthew 26:28
This is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins.
Blessings of Holy Communion
forgiveness of sins
What great blessings does Jesus give us in the Lord’s Supper?
Romans 5:9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how
much more shall we be saved from
God’s wrath through him!
Blessings of Holy Communion
life and salvation
What’s wrong here?
Since Jesus says, “Do this in remembrance of me,” we know that the Lord’s Supper is mainly a reminder of what he did for us.
Agree or Disagree?
The forgiveness we receive in the Lord’s Supper is greater than the
forgiveness we receive in Baptism, because in Communion we receive Jesus’ true body and blood, but in
Baptism we don’t.
Let’s say an elderly member of our congregation dies. It’s been
more than a month since that person received the Lord’s
Supper. Is that bad? Why or why not?
How does Jesus assure us that we receive these blessings in the Lord’s Supper?
Luke 22:19-20And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given
for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the
new covenant in my blood, which is poured
out for you.
Assurance of Blessings
Jesus gives me his true body and
blood
How does Jesus assure us that we receive these blessings in the Lord’s Supper?
Luke 22:19-20And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given
for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the
new covenant in my blood, which is poured
out for you.
Assurance of Blessings
Jesus says, “For you.”
Key Point #2
By giving each of us his true body and blood and saying, “for you,” Jesus assures us that each
individual receives these blessings.
Mark says, “Communion seems to be the time when a Christian gets
the greatest comfort of forgiveness. You come to the Lord’s Supper,
and Jesus gives you his true body and blood. What could be more
comforting than that?” How would you respond?
Evaluate…
In some Episcopal churches, the priest hands each person a wafer
and says, “The body of Christ, the bread of heaven.” Then he offers
each person the cup and says, “The blood of Christ, the cup of
salvation.”
How can the Lord’s Supper give us God’s great blessings?
John 6:63The Spirit gives
life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are
life.
Power to Bless Comes Through
Jesus’ words
How can the Lord’s Supper give us God’s great blessings?
Matthew 26:26-27While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave
thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave
thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.”
Power to Bless Comes Through
connected to eating and drinking
How can the Lord’s Supper give us God’s great blessings?
Romans 10:17Consequently, faith
comes from hearing the
message, and the message is heard through the word
of Christ.
Jesus’ Words
promise us
blessings
give us faith to receive those
blessings
Key Point #3The Lord’s Supper can offer and
give God’s great blessings because Jesus’ words promise
those blessings and also strengthen our faith in those
blessings.
What’s wrong here?
Coming to Communion and believing God’s promises earn
us forgiveness for our sins.
What happens if a person who doesn’t trust in Jesus comes to
the Lord’s Table? Does he receive Jesus’ body and blood? Why or why not? Are his sins forgiven? Why or why not?
Pastor Smith’s mind wandered a bit when he was distributing the
Lord’s Supper. As he offered someone the cup he said, “Take and eat. This is the true body…”
Did that person receive the Lord’s blood? Why or why not?
Which is better to say? “The body and blood of the Lord
strengthens us in faith.” or “The Holy Spirit strengthens us in
faith when we receive the body and blood of the Lord.” Why did
you make your choice?
Agree or Disagree?
When a pastor gives the Lord’s Supper, he acts as a mediator between God and man. Give a
reason for your answer.
In one of our church services could your father give people
the Lord’s Supper? Why or why not? Could you give people the
Lord’s Supper? Why or why not? Could someone who isn’t a Christian give people the Lord’s
Supper? Why or why not?
