It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Montréal for the 19th Pan American Congress of the Clefs d'or concierges.

Montréal is an exceptional city which I invite you to discover. The warmth of our residents, our cultural and tourist attractions, and our epicurean cuisine make Quebec's metropolis a destination of choice for tourists and conventioneers alike. It's not an accident that we rank a strong number one for the most conventions held each year!

Here, as elsewhere, it is outstanding hospitality that makes people earnestly wish to return. And in this sense, the role of concierges is crucial. Often, you are visitors’ first point of contact, and your knowledge of your environment is valuable to travellers. Your wise advice and your willingness to help under all circumstances are valuable assets for cities that have developed a strong potential to attract tourists.

I wish you an excellent stay in Montréal and invite you to return in 2017, when we will celebrate the 375th anniversary of the founding of our great city. I look forward to seeing you again!

Denis Coderre Maire de Montréal Mayor of Montréal

Dear friends and colleagues,

We have worked hard to greet you here today.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you to Montreal, our beautiful, electrifying, and charming city, where the four seasons provide you with something magical. The month of March, I hope will charm you with both by its whiteness, and especially by its warmth.

As Director of the region, I am proud of my members and the relationships that we have established with our partners. I want to personally thank all our sponsors, because without your support this could never have been feasible. This is the first time that our city receives a Pan-American Con-gress and we hope to have created a Conference that meets your expectations. At any time you can approach any of us if you have any questions and we will be happy to share our secrets with you.

Conferences are always for me a great source of renaissance and motivation. Where I fill up on new ideas and establish new relationships for the following year. Enjoy every moment; create lasting memories, as these few days will simply fly by.

Sincerely,

Chanel Mongeon Présidente du Congrès Directrice Régionale - Montréal Marriott Château Champlain

Bienvenue dear friends.

On behalf of the entire Canadian membership, it is my great honour to welcome you to a treasured Canadian city-- Montreal! We are absolutely de-lighted to host you during our celebrations of the 40th Anniversary of Les Clefs d’Or Canada!

Our committee has carefully crafted this 19th Pan-American congress with one dedicated goal… to leave each of you, our colleagues and friends from the Americas and abroad, sated with extraordinary experiences and memories.

Today as you reunite with old friends and make cherished new ones, we begin to showcase our carefully selected program. We welcome you with open arms to Montreal’s fabulous dining and nightlife, a fun-filled traditional evening, a beautiful gala to be held in one of the city’s his-torical venues and a trail blazing educational day that will have you looking at these questions in new ways… Voulez vous Lead? Voulez vous Sell? Voulez vous Inspire?

We are excited to celebrate with you at this mo-ment as it represents a culmination of the focus on the Les Clefs d’Or brand that has launched an unprecedented wave of national support for each and every one of our members here in Canada.

On behalf of the Greater Montréal Convention and Tourism Bureau, Tourisme Montréal, I would like to wish the delegates of the 19th Pan-American Congress Les Clefs d’Or a warm welcome to our city.

We are honoured to be hosting this prestigious meeting of concierges from North, Central and South America in Montréal, a city whose unique appeal is made all the more special thanks to the work of professionals like you. For tourists around the globe, you are a veritable treasure trove of information, sharing all the musts, the inside tips and the secrets and charms of a destination. Now, it is our turn to share all of Montréal’s many facets with you.

A captivating mix of European flair and North American modernity, Montréal enjoys a truly one-of-a-kind cachet. From its dynamic downtown to its many vibrant neighbourhoods, every day here teems with discovery. People from around the world come to Montréal for its amazing food, its festivals, its culture and its nightlife, and a multitude of other things to see and do. Early March in Montréal, especially, buzz-es with the promise of spring and the bubbling new energy of the season.

While you are here, take some time to explore underground art during Art Souterrain, see a first-ever ex-hibition on Pompeii at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, catch a film during the International Festival of Film on Art or watch thousands of beautiful butterflies flit about at the Botanical Garden. Or maybe just wander Old Montréal’s cobblestone streets, grab a smoked meat sandwich on “the Main” or tuck into a café and mingle with the locals. The ways to experience our city are absolutely endless.

We wish you a productive and energizing meeting, and hope that you leave with one-of-a-kind Montréal memories!

President and Chief Executive Officer Tourisme Montréal

Page 11: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

As International President of Les Clefs d’Or I experience few greater pleasures than officiating at our major events around the world. I have had the privilege of attending some outstanding meetings in a variety of exotic des-tinations. From my first International Congress in the ancient city of Jerusalem to our recent Asian Congress in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, each of them has left an indelible impression on me. Above all it is the sense of camaraderie and spirit of shared purpose that makes these events so memorable for myself and all of our members in attendance.

Nowhere is this more evident than at the highly antic-ipated Pan American Congress. For many years this unique gathering has set the standard for participation rates, educational opportunities and organisational structure. Such is the level of importance that our association now places on this important forum that the entire International Executive Committee felt compelled to attend one of our more recent Congresses in Las Vegas. Indeed outside of our annual International Congress, the Pan American is now widely recognised as the largest and most dynamic assembly of Concierge professionals anywhere in the world.

This year our dedicated team in Canada have been en-trusted to deliver another richly rewarding program for attendees. Building on the success of their recent AGM in Whistler, in particular their innovative use of social media, our Canadian colleagues will once again look

to raise the bar. I have no doubt that President Carolina Avaria and her organising committee will rise to the challenge and produce another outstanding event.

Joining us in Montreal will be our dear friend and Gen-eral Secretary James Ridenour. James has spent much of the last year coordinating the development of our Brand Strategy and he will be sharing some of his insights on this important project prior to its official unveiling in Dubai the following month. Although a native of British Colombia James will be attending his very first Pan American Congress and I am sure that he, like myself, will take great pride in acknowledging his Canadian heritage.

To our hard working Zone Director Shujaat Khan I extend to you my personal thanks and gratitude for overseeing this year’s program. With the support of your National Presidents and the input of your members I expect that we will all be enjoying a productive few days. To our members who will be joining us from throughout the Americas I wish you safe travels and I very much look forward to sharing in this special occasion with you.

Yours in friendship,

Colin Toomey President Les Clefs d’Or International

Page 12: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program

Dear Colleagues, Presidents and Guests:

Welcome to the 19th Pan-American Congress in Montreal!

Every two years, many members of the American Zone make a pilgrimage to uplift our spirits, further our goals, expand our network and promote growth in our Zone. Each congress host city puts their best foot forward, to welcome all of us, in the true spirit of friendship. Over the last two decades, we’ve enjoyed meeting all over the Americas.

The Canadian Board and the Montreal planning committee have been hard at work creat-ing a magnificent congress for all of us. The educational symposium and key note speakers will excite and challenge us. We’ll go back to our desks with renewed enthusiasm, better able to serve our guests.

Please make sure to welcome first-time attendees and renew old friendships. We hope to provide you with just the right mix of educational and networking opportunities to reen-ergize your spirit and pride in your profession!

In service through friendship,

Shujaat Khan Zone Director of the Americas

Page 13: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program
Page 14: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program

Dear Friends of America,

It is perhaps redundant to wish you all a great congress; since I know the organizing Canadian team, I am positive you will enjoy a memorable meeting. I deeply regret not to share it this time with you.

I have visited CANADA several times; my first one was Montreal 2004. The modern and antique areas were fantastic with a classic elegance on the streets and of course the great restaurants. As I said before, I know the organizing committee; all are excellent concierges, people who understand the meaning of quality of service, the value of professionalism and the impact they cause every single day with their smiles and attention. But more than very good professionals, they are very good people. They are generous, friendly and welcoming.

I consider myself a friend of Canada. I wish all the participants of the 19th PANAMERICAN CONGRESS an excellent reunion and especially for those who are beginners to enjoy and profit from this experience. Let yourselves get inspired by the city, the country and all your friends from all over America.

Vive CANADA! Vive Les Clefs d´Or!

Pablo Castro President Les Clefs d’Or ARGENTINA

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the Congress in Montreal!

I have already attended several of these con-ferences and I know how much I have learned from this fascinating experience of exchanging feelings, points of view and different cultures with colleagues from other countries.

Today, as president of the Brazilian Concierge Association I say to all the attendants of this congress that I’m very happy and honored to participate of this 19th Pan American Congress. I wish all of you to live intensely this exchange fellowship between peoples and cultures and that each one of you may take the best advantage of what the Canadian friends have prepared for all of us. So let’s participate on this congress with the beginner’s mind, which is always very important for the daily learning.

I have learned throughout life as a concierge, as an aikidoíst and as a student, that the more I learn, the less I know, so let’s keep ourselves hum-ble and conscious about this wise way of thinking and waste no opportunity to learn from others and enjoy every moment because this experience will be unique and singular.

In service through friendship!

Guilherme S. Borges President Les Clefs d’Or Brésil

Page 15: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program

Dear Colleagues:

It is an honor & my pleasure to have the op-portunity to get together at this marvelous city: Montreal, for the 19th Pan American Congress, the best occasion to learn and share experiences surrounded by a large group of friends that we can call Concierges.

All of us eager to make this practice a memorable one looking for the excellence and the optimum service, enjoying and living each corner of this city which offers us the best trip these days, of course showing how astonishing is the Canadian hospitality.

This intake of art and history will take us to the next level, in an extraordinary company.

The City of Montreal with its Concierge and Clefs d’Or tradition will allow the younger Concierg-es to live and understand how to be the best ambassadors for the country they represent, all of this will happen at their very first Congress, an experience that changes life.

When you return home, you will realize that you are not the same person you were, you arrive as an attendee and become a passionate of service and a lover of the Golden Keys and what they represent.

You will have more knowledge to assist your guests and more capabilities to share with your team, because the time that you spend in this event will be useful the rest of your life, to serve and assist the people you meet.

My personal advice is live, feel, enjoy every moment and every person you meet, reach your potential and take control, being part of the con-cierge community.

Take advantage of the diversity to increase your networking and be sure to secure at least one very best friend for each country that participates at the congress it is the real meaning of the Golden Crossed Keys that open every door around the world.

The best opportunity to practice our French!!

En servicio a través de la Amistad.

Most importantly, the networking opportunities will nurture our bonds of friendship and dedication to our craft. Thank you to the planning committee and all the members of Les Clefs d’Or Canada, for the enormous work they’ve done to design an exceptional congress agenda. René Villemure International Ethicist

René Villemure is an ethicist and trend spotter. He founded the Quebec Institute for Applied Ethics in 1998, Ethikos in 2003, and BoardEthics in 2014. Very much a trailblazer, René Villemure was the first ethicist in Canada to study ethics management within large organizations.

At the time, hardly anyone knew about such terms as governance, corporate social responsibility and ethical management. He believed that these issues inescapably commanded attention; that they could not, and should not, be ignored. Central to René Villemure’s efforts is how to promote, and make truly accessible, matters of ethics.

FROM SECRET TO DISCREET

The world is changing.

The Les Clefs d’Or Concierge profession is also changing.

How can we understand the requirements of a changing world while fulfilling the profession of a Concierge to perfection?

While codes of conduct outline what not to do, ethics suggests do good. From one to the other, there is a world of difference.

The Think8 study demonstrated that Concierges are quite familiar with LCD, but what about the guests? What about the General Managers? Do they know a little, a lot or nothing at all about the essence of a Les Clefs d’Or Concierge?

We must admit that the concierge is a very well kept secret.

The conference’s aim is to transition the Con-cierge profession from secret to discreet by promoting core values that are the foundation of the Concierge work... all within the necessary discretion which is the hallmark of LCD.

Thank you to our Gala Night Silver & Bronze Sponsors!

Page 33: Les Clefs d'Or - Montreal 2016 Panam Congress Program

Marjorie Silverman is truly a Clefs d’Or icon.

Marjorie exemplifies everything Les Clefs d’Or strives to be. She is a consummate professional. Her brilliance lies in her ability to mentor, to teach, and to guide others.

Most of you could liken Marjorie to the Dalai Lama, a most benevolent ruler and gentle teacher, incarnated to guide the fate of us mere mortals.

Muffin said she thinks of Marjorie as Athena, the goddess of intelligence, skill, peace, warfare, battle strategy, handicrafts and wisdom. Marjorie’s got all that in spades!

She’s a natural-born leader, and watching her is absolutely magical – she guides so gently, you don’t even know you’re being guided. Her influence is as strong as it is invisible. She is Les Clefs d’Or’s gentle shepherd.

In South American circles, Marjorie is known as “La Madrina,” or “godmother,” because of the many baby as-sociations she nurtured to maturity. It was during her tenure as Zone Director that Mexico and Brazil became members of the Clefs d’Or family.

Marjorie’s concierge career began in 1980 at the Westin Hotel Chicago. She is a founding member of the Chicago Hotel Concierge Association. She has held every office of Les Clefs d’Or USA, and became the USA president in 1989. Ten years later, in 1999, she became the first American and first female president of UICH. She has watched our association grow from 25 to more than 650. Every president – both national and interna-tional – has sought her unerring advice at one time or another. And, as a member of the esteemed Comité des Sages, Marjorie continues to steadily safeguard UICH and advise its leaders, even today.

Besides being a concierge, a consultant, a parent, an advisor, a teacher, a spouse, and a role-model, Marjorie is also a master gardener, gourmet chef, voracious reader, and renowned wordsmith.
