Introduction

5Tourist Office - Les Baux-de-ProvenceTourist Office - Les Baux-de-Provence

The village of Les Baux-de-Provence, perched on a spur of rock, has an incredibly diverse architectural heritage including an extraordinarily beautiful citadel that towers over the surrounding countryside.

The exceptional decor brings memories of the past back to life, upholds traditions, is home to the art of the people who lived here and plays host to prestigious events.

It is not just a place steeped in history, though. It has much more to offer. The tradition of providing visitors with a warm welcome is as present as ever in its gourmet restaurants and delightful hotels that play host to celebrity guests.

One of the most beautiful Villages in France

The Baux-de-Provence appellation is a symbol of quality.

Its vines, grown on sun-drenched rocky soil, produce generous wines. Its olive oil is warm and fruity.

Set in the heart of the Alpilles regional country park, Les Baux-de-Provence is a listed heritage site that has won titles such as “one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France” or “an Outstanding Centre for Flavoursome Food”. In fact, the village is unique because it is just that bit more famous than others, and just a bit more magical. And the essence that gives Provencal villages their very special atmosphere and fragrance is here too – small squares, well-shaded ter-races, narrow streets and small shops.

Louis Jou Foundation (1881-1968)

As an artist, engraver, illustrator, typographer and talented editor, Louis Jou's reputation stems from works that combine creative power with perfect execution. He was a friend of painters and poets (Derain, Picasso, Apollinaire, Suarès) and, in 1939, he decided to set up his studio in Les Baux-de-Provence. He was the town’s pioneering artist, living in the magnificent Renaissance Jean de Brion mansion that now houses a museum of his works and his collections: incunables, antique books, and engravings by Dürer and Goya in particular. His studio reveals the stringency and rigour of Louis Jou’s works. Between the manual presses and the sets of letters created by the artist, you can see the world of typography and édition d’art.Louis Jou was a passionate artist who had a major influence on contem-porary books. Poet and publisher Pierre Seghers described him as “the architect of books and Les Baux”.

The Foundation will be undertaking some major work in 2018 so the Museum will be temporarily closed. The workshop is open to visitors with advance booking. Please leave your contact details and request on +33 (0)4 90 92 13 74 or send an email to [email protected].

The Yves Brayer Museum is housed in one of the most beautiful mansions in the centre of the village, the Hôtel de Porcelet. It presents a wide-ranging retrospec-tive of the works of this artist who was so fond of Mediterranean landscapes and who is one of the most representative exponents of figurative art in the 20th cen-tury.In his youth, Yves Brayer was attracted by Spain then by Italy, and he powerfully expressed their specific characteristics in oils, gouaches and monotypes.

Heritage

At a very young age Signac turned towards a style of painting inspired by Claude Monet. A founding member of the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1884, he invented, along with Georges Seurat, pointillism and neo-impressionism. When Seurat died in 1891, he settled in Saint-Tropez and discovered watercolours, which allowed him to move around more freely and keep a greater degree of spontaneity. With this technique he no longer used pointillism but remained faithful to neo-impressionism, keeping its contrasts and purity of tone. From 1904, Saint-Tropez became the rallying point not only for neo-impressionists but also Fauvist painters. His influence over 20th century painting was considerable. At the beginning of the century, he travelled in France and abroad and then, starting in 1929, painted his “Ports de France" series of watercolours over three years. This exhibition brings together around thirty watercolours and wash-drawings of the South of France on loan from major Museums (Musée d’Orsay, l’Annonciade, Musée de Saint-Tropez, Musée Cantini and Musée de Grenoble) and private col-lections, some of which have never been shown before. Drawing and above all watercolour are techniques that demand a great deal of skill and do not allow any reworking because it is not possible to make any changes. Visitors will thus find themselves faced directly with the artist’s talent and instincts.

Santon Museum

The museum of “santons” (figures for the Christmas crib) contains a vast number of exhibits including some outstanding figurines made in Naples, scenes illustrating the traditions of Provence and Les Baux linked to the Nativity. The museum houses several different collections - Neapolitan figurines from the 17th and 18th centuries, 19th-century “santons” for churches whose painted papier mâché faces and glass sulphur eyes were made by the Carmelite convent in Avignon and figures by famous makers such as Carbonnel, Fouque, Jouve, Peyron Campagna, Toussaint, Thérèse Neveu, Louise Berger, Simone Jouglas etc.

The traditional ceremony of the Shepherds’ Offering, known locally as the “Pastrage”, is staged against the background of Les Baux-de-Provence, in front of the village church. A traditional Provençal Christmas crib and the everyday life of a 19th-century family are shown in two large windows. For children, a crowd of small brightly-coloured, naively-painted santons is placed at a height that they can reach.

A very large canvas, painted by Antoine Serra (1908-1995), depicting midnight mass at Baux-de-Provence has just been added to these unique collections. The history of this picture dates back to 24 December 1947 when the artist, who had a studio in the village, took part in the ceremony in Saint-Vincent’s church.

The three "Vallée des Baux-de-Provence" AOP (Appellation d’Ori-gine Protégée, guaranteed origin) labels for black crushed olives, pricked olives and olive oil were awarded on August 31st 1997, de-monstrating the pure typicality of the fruits from the olive-trees from our Alpine foothills.

Salonenques and beruguettes, crushed green olives flavoured with fennel uniquely express the "savours of the garrigue". Ripe black pricked grossane olives are unlike any others and truly marry the ardour and aroma of Provence.

The final expression of the olive tree, competing with the colour of the Provence sun, is olive oil - the quintessence of know-how, our land and the tastes and scents of Southern France.

An "AOP Vallée des Baux-de-Provence" olive oil has two out- standing versions – "green fruit" (with its scents of raw arti-chokes, freshly-cut hay, wet grass, fresh almonds, green apples etc.) and "black fruit" (with its scents of preserved black olives, mushrooms, truffles, cooked artichokes, tapenade, cocoa and sour dough bread).

The vineyardsfashioned by nature

In the heart of the Alpilles hills, in an unspoilt natural setting, the vi-neyards of Baux-de-Provence reveal all their splendour. Here, with the deep love that they have for the earth that is their heritage, the vine-growers place respect for the environment at the centre of their daily preoccupations to the extent that today the appellation is proud to say that 100% of its 244 hectares are farmed organically, using reasoned agriculture, or biodynamically.

Each winemaker crafts individual wines, red white and rosé, each with their own specific character: reds that are powerful and in-tense in the image of the terroir that gave them life, rosés full of gourmandise and highly aromatic whites.

Desirous to share their wines and their passion, the twelve domains of Baux-de-Provence open their doors to you. Whether on foot, by bicycle or in a car, just let yourself be guided. At the end of the route is a winemaker, a glass and some great wines to fall in love with!
