Welcome to the 8th annual Amateurs competition!  We are excited about this year's competition.  After originally trying to book several courses at and near Kentucky Dam State Park, we ran into a conflict and were forced to cancel the whole Dam thing.  (Apparently, the folks in the pro shop there don't speak to each other and keep separate reservation sheets.)  Thanks to the quick action of Founding Father Blake Bourland and the fact that the Amateurs is one of the most sought-after tournaments by golf courses everywhere, we were able to quickly find a new host site near Paris Landing State Park in the great state of Tennessee.  Les Amateurs 2011 brings a fresh look, including the new location, a new season of the year and 2 brand new Amateurs - Will Hunt and Matthew Flynn.  We will also be welcoming back long time Amateurs Jason Holbrook(s) and John Bryson to this year's field. We will be leaving on Thursday, September 8, returning on September 11, and will be staying in cabins at Paris Landing State Park Golf Course.  Pets are allowed with a charge per pet per night although, based on his past experience with Jack’s dog at the Amateurs, Kennon strongly discourages any pets.  There is a public swimming area and beach on Kentucky Lake, and the park has an Olympic-size public swimming pool along with a kiddie pool for those interested.  A refreshing swim will be nice after long, grueling days of golf. The move from spring to fall allows all competitors to fine tune their "golf swings" over the remainder of the summer months, which you would think would result in more consistent play and lower scores.  However, the Paris Landing State Park Golf Course and the Tennessean will likely prevent both.   The Paris Landing State Park Golf Course, home to Friday’s 1st and 2nd Round, is situated on the western shore of Kentucky Lake, located in the "Land Between the Lakes" area. The entire course is tree-lined, creating a feeling that you are the only one on the course and you may never find you ball as it rolls into the woods. Several holes skirt the Kentucky Lake, producing a natural balance of rolling land, trees, and water. Through the years, Paris Landing has hosted numerous collegiate and high school championships, but has only recently qualified to host such an event as the Amateurs.

The Tennessean Golf Club, which is where the 3rd and 4th Round as well as Saturday afternoon’s optional round will be played, was designed by one of golf's top designers, but only nature itself could provide the rugged terrain that makes this course truly extraordinary.  Dramatic elevation changes and

untouched woodlands bring exhilaration to your quest to master the game as well as frustration to your quest to lose less than 6 balls per round and break 100.  Here is a course so thoughtfully crafted that it feels as if it has always been part of the landscape. Here is a design so dynamic that it challenges both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  Each hole presents a distinct challenge that will hold your interest and imagination, round after round, stroke after stroke, muffed shot after muffed shot.  The land that The Tennessean Golf Club was carved from was so untouched, that an abandoned moonshine still was found during course construction.  It was left undisturbed in the deeply wooded environs that surround the course.  It has been said that a pit-stop by the still can correct even the most Amateurish swing flaw. As always, all of the information you need will be provided in the 2011 Les Amateurs Media Guide, which will be distributed to all registered media representatives.  If you have any questions, please contact any of the Founding Fathers.  We are confident this year's competition will be as intense as ever, and we look forward to seeing everyone in Paris!

Your humble servants,

The Founding Fathers

Founding Father Geer is the first to admit that controversy follows championships, but no one could of imaged that Audubon Golf Course would be at the center of attention for 2011.

LOGISTICS

It has rained 4 out of the past 8 Amateurs. In 2008, in Muscle Shoals, AL lightening caused players to run for cover. Come prepared - rain or shine we play golf.

Page 5: Les Amateurs 2011 Media Guide

Paris in the Fall is quite lovely, especially if you're teeing it up at the The Tennessean, a heavily forested layout in Paris, Tennessee, 100 miles west of Nashville near the Kentucky border. It was the perfect job for architect Keith Foster, who lives in Paris, Kentucky. We're not sure if Foster speaks French or not, but his design oozes joie de vivre in the form of severely undulating fairways and greens, rock outcroppings, chasms and creeks.

This course has more natural defenses than usually are found in one place: imposing knolls, winding creeks, rock ledges, deep gulches, steep-walled valleys, and sharp elevation changes, and a lot of big trees. Towering pines and old-growth hardwoods frame the heavily undulating fairways. The land was untouched for so long, an abandoned moonshine still was discovered during course construction. The course follows the natural contours of the land, and Foster has aggressively contoured greens, dug cavernous bunkers, and slotted tees into the hillsides.

5 LES AMATEURS 2011

The Paris Landing State Park Golf Course is situated on the western shore of Kentucky Lake, located in the "Land Between the Lakes" area. The entire course is tree-lined, creating a feeling that you are the only one on the course, very rarely seeing another foursome. Several holes skirt the Kentucky Lake, producing a natural balance of rolling land, trees, and water. Through the years Paris Landing has hosted numerous collegiate and high school championships.

The course opened in 1971. In 1994 Hole #12 was redesigned lengthening the hole by approximately 75 to 100 yards and relocating the green to include the vistas of the lake, while greens on Hole #7 and Hole #13 were rebuilt in 1996-1997. Hole #12 is a 586-yard, par 5 with an elevated green again overlooking the Kentucky Lake. The signature hole #4 is a downhill 186-yard par 3 with the Kentucky Lake providing a scenic backdrop.

Since 1995, Golf Digest has awarded this course the 4 Star Award.

Both courses featured this year meet The Amateurs’ requirements for being environmentally friendly.

Inspired by Jimmy V, his heart, drive, and determination. In one of the greatest moments in recent human history, Jimmy V stood before the world and challenged us to fight together for a worthy cause. His last words, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up" marked a defining moment in this generation's battle against cancer.

The Valvaughano’s seek to honor Jimmy V and the cause he stood for as we also unify together with passion, drive, grit, desire, and determination and fight together for cause of great fellowship and sweet victory. Our motto will nonetheless be: "Never give up."

Captain Kennon Vaughan

We are not into Braveheart-type rah-rah speeches.

As with the brave men that landed on the beaches of Normandy during the first Operation Overlord, we are focused entirely on our mission.

We are prepared, gifted, and ready to honor the men that fought in Operation Overlord. And, like those brave men, we believe our mission will be complete when our enemies leave Paris soundly beaten.

Another successful Amateurs is behind us, and as I reflect on the weekend, I cannot help but believe that Amateurs VII was in fact one of the top 7 Amateurs ever. After months of anticipation, practice, golf lessons and some strategic maneuvering by captains Marino and Walker, the weekend finally arrived. Despite the attempts of a rogue greens-keeper to thwart the competition, the Amateurs participants adapted well to the single course format and fought through the standing water and gravel-ridden rough of Tannenbaum for four long rounds. Nutrition is essential to maintaining peak athletic performance, and the Amateurs had no shortage of nutrition as everyone enjoyed a steady diet of hot dogs, hamburgers and beer mixed in with a healthy assortment of fried food for a bit of variety.

Most of the participants arrived on Thursday except for Jack Pieratt who arrived early to scout the course. Once the final car arrived on Thursday evening, everyone gathered to go over the rules before breaking out into team meetings to talk strategy for Friday. After team meetings, several participants broke out into a ping pong frenzy before heading to bed. Friday morning came

quickly and brought with it the first ever alternate shot round in Amateurs history. It was truly a momentous occasion. The course was wet but playable with lift, clean and place provisions in effect. The teams split the 2 matches with Matthews/Walker defeating Vick/Wade (5&4) and Dorman/Byrd defeating Hill/Frazee (3&2) for American Storm while Weathersby/Geer defeated Pieratt/Carpenter (3&2) and Marino/Marino defeated Bourland/Vaughan (1 up) for Bella Giornata. Sports analysts claim it was the longest round of alternate shot ever, especially for the Dorman/Byrd vs. Hill/Frazee match would lasted 5 hours not including holes 17 and 18.

After a burger at the turn served up by the less-than-attentive head pro/greenskeeper/chef, the teams were ready to head out for round 2, a two-man best ball match. The

afternoon round brought some high scores and heavy beer drinking for some, while others turned up the heat on the course. AS was able to open up a 3-point lead over BG by winning three matches and halving one. Walker/Byrd were able to defeat Marino/Weathersby (2&1) and Matthews/Carpenter were able to defeat Vick/Hill (5&4).  Vaughan/Dorman defeated Wade/Marino (2&1) and Pieratt/Bourland halved the match with Geer/Frazee, with Pieratt shooting a net 2 under par 70 (gross 72) and Bourland shooting slightly higher.

After a long day of golf, the Amateurs were ready for a delicious catfish dinner at the regionally famous Jansen’s. However, apparently Mr. Jansen’s son unexpectedly graduated from high school, and he decided to close the restaurant down to throw his son a party. As it turns out, catfish barns are plentiful in Heber Springs, and Founding Father Dallas Geer was able to convince the staff at Henley's Catfish Barn to squeeze us in. The vegetarians of the group were at a loss, but there was plenty of fried deliciousness to go around. Even more surprisingly, they could have accommodated a group 10 times our size at

one table. Yet another argument to increase the field to 24...or 124.

The participants awoke Saturday morning with tired bodies and sore muscles which would only be compounded by the day's heat. As it has in previous years, stamina would prove to be a factor.  BG needed to come strong in order to keep AS from running away with the competition. As it turned out, both teams could have slept in and gone fishing and it would not have made a difference in the score as the matches were split evenly. Geer/Marino defeated Walker/Mathews (3&2) and Frazee/Wade defeated Bourland/Vaughan (7&5) for BG (Bourland was Vaguhan's teammate but since he didn't contribute a hole to the team, his name is left out for the purpose of this recap) while Pieratt/Byrd defeated Vick/Weathersby (3&2) and Dorman/Carpenter defeated Hill/Marino (4&3) for AS. Spectators were left wondering if golfing ability had anything at all to do with winning at the Amateurs as Byrd and Dorman were both 3-0 on the weekend while both averaging triple-digit scores.

Saturday afternoon brought another round of golf for some, while others decided to take a break and hang out around Joe's Cabin. After such a gluttonous meal on Friday night, the Amateurs decided to go healthy by grilling out burgers, chips, beans and cupcakes Saturday night. No one was able to sleep too comfortably as AS held onto a fragile 3-point lead going into Sunday's one-on-one match play competition. Captains Marino and Walker made an executive decision to start the round a bit earlier than planned in order to make sure everyone made it to Memphis in time for work on Monday morning. With everything riding on the final 8 matches, the pressure was intense. Rules interpretations were vigorously debated throughout the day, and gimmies were difficult to come by. BG secured two and half points on the day with Geer shooting the low net round of the weekend (79/69) and defeating co-MVP Dorman (6&4). Founding Father Chris Hill also defeated co-MVP Byrd (2 up) to break his snap his winning streak and the captains halved the traditional captain vs. captain matchup in a nail biter.

But AS stepped up to the plate with co-MVP Carpenter defeating the otherwise red-hot rookie Frazee (7&6) proving that experience is as valuable as raw talent, especially on Sunday. Co-MVP Matthews defeated Tony Wade (2&1) who insists on wearing pants at all times on the golf course "to keep the cool in." Vaughan won both his battle with allergies and Marino the Younger (a.k.a., "the rookie") (4&2) and Bourland, in what can only be described as a miracle as he still finished winner of the High Net Award, defeated Weathersby (3&2) who was still trying to count the number of putts that Byrd took on #10 green the day before. Finishing the day with the shot of the weekend by hitting a ball 6 inches under water, Pieratt was able to vanquish Vick (4&2) whose scores on the weekend indicated that his home course in Texas might be the easiest course in Texas. By the time all of the strokes were tallied, AS finished on top 13-7.

The weekend ended the same way that it began with a stop for more burgers, fried food and milkshakes at the Bulldog Cafe in the most awkwardly-named town in America, Bald Knob, AR. Overall, Amateurs VII can be considered nothing less than a screaming success with some good competition, good food and most of all, good fellowship. Now that it's over, it's time to start buffing the scratches out of your clubs and start honing your swing for next year...
