  • So what happens when we put the mode of fixed together with the element of fire?

  • We get Leo!As the fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo represents the fifth stage in the evolution of man and his place in the universe. The Leo need is to develop mans creative urge. Creativity is not entirely an emotional urge in Leo, it is also an expression of ego. The mind and heart are united in Leo to represent mans ultimate individuality.

  • Leos are stubborn and impervious to changes not of their own making. They are however, able to accomplish things in life because of their tenacity in sticking with projects when others lose patience and stamina. Attempts to back them into a corner, or demanding that they change their thinking or behavior will quickly reveal the extent of their intractable nature. Unfortunately, stubbornness in the Leo personality is dictated more often than not by their ego.

  • Leos react physically to everything they experience.Leos tackle projects others would not attempt, though they cannot help calling as much attention as possible to their efforts. Before they assess the practicality or worth of what they are doing, before they sort out their true emotions, and before they take time to reason things out intellectually, their tendency is to shoot first and ask questions later.Their penchant for exaggeration and overreaction works well in the theater, advertising schemes, and other situations where a bigger than life approach is desirable. Leos are often guilty however, of habitually turning a mundane problem or fairly routine situation into an overblown crisis, much to the confusion and annoyance of those around them.

  • Leos Astrological SymbolThe majestic lion, the King of the Beasts, is Leos symbol.Throughout history, the lion has symbolized sovereignty, rulership, and courage. The lions size and strength have captured human imagination since ancient times.Leos, like lions, are thought to be strong leaders. They generally have a regal quality to them, and possess a noble manner that is hard to miss.

  • Leos Astrological GlyphThe glyph for Leo represents the mane of the lion.

  • The Leo MythThe medieval legend of Parzival.

  • ParzivalParzival is the epitome of the hero on the quest. Our mythical hero, like many other heroes, is fatherless at the beginning of the story He decides to become a knight.

  • Strangely, Leo is often fatherless, or has a difficult relationship with the father.

  • ParzivalParzival begins his adventuresParzival has a vision in a forest when he finds himself in a mysterious glittering castleThere is a sick old king There is an enigmatic and beautiful woman a sword and an object which comes to be known in later Christianized legends as the Holy Grail Parzival stares, bewildered at this drama, but does not say anythinga great angry voice speaks and tells him he has made a dreadful mistake and failedWhat does this mean?

  • Parzival awakens from his vision cold and alone in the wood.

  • If we remove the later embellishments which Christianity has placed over the tale, we can see in it the pattern of Leos life. For the quest of Leo is the quest of the Self: Who am I?What does my life mean? What is it that makes me different from others? It is a deeply introverted and profound quest. Many Leos are not aware in any way that this is their road; but they follow it nonetheless.

  • For this reason too, Leo is self-centered.He has a kind of constant self-consciousness, a sort of watcher that is always watching himself watching himself, that never really allows him to be totally aware of the environment except in relation to himself. It is almost impossible for Leo to detach from himself. Nor should he.His whole journey is about discovering who that watcher is.

  • Well now mention some of the challenges to Leo. Remember though we are talking about the energy of Leo and there are many types of energy.

    Ask: Why are we here?

    Let audience answer!

State: The time of the full moon is a time of celebration.

We celebrate the energy of the SUN.

The reason is that when the Moon is full it is the furthest from the Sun, thus the Suns energy is the strongest.

Thus we celebrate the energy of the Sun through meditation and reflection.*[Click] For those of you who are not familiar with esoteric philosophy or do not know it well I will remind you that all is energy. Thus you should simply relax and try to feel the energy rather then concern yourself with understanding everything.

[Click] During the lecture you can ask questions or make comments. After the meditation we will gather for coffee/tea and you may also ask questions.*[Click] [Click] [Click] [Click] [Click]

**[Click] [Click] [Click] Why should you learn about Leo if you are not one?

    [Let audience answer!]

[Click] You may have another planet - or the Moon in Leo.

[Click] Even if you do not the Leo energy will still affect you - and, perhaps, as importantly those around you.

[Click] I should also mention that if you are a Leo that you may not display all of the characteristics of Leo as you have other planets and energies that also affect you.

*What are the 3 modes? Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable**The fixed signs are concerned [click] with maintaining something, changing things so they are the same as before, or stabilizing things. (click) Fixed and changed appear to be contradictory. Imagine a house. Every day it gets untidy and dirty. In order to keep it in its "normal" state, it must be changed - cleaned, tidied, etc - so it remains the same. A body needs to be regularly fed and watered if it is to maintain its state of being alive. There appears to be no change because there is a lot of change directed to maintain a state, such as a clean house and a living body. Another example is a field. If the field is not maintained (lots of change, like ploughing, setting seed, weeding, etc) then the field will disappear as Nature reclaims it. What is fixed is the clean house, the living body and the field. What is changed is all the things that keep, for example a field, a field and not a wilderness.

[click] Leo wants to keep its personal power. It wants to be impressive and creative and keep this relationship with others. It makes changes so that it remains in its power state. What are the four elements? Fire, Earth, Air, Water***Fire tends to go upwards, and can [click] raise things into the clouds and beyond. The [click] sun and the stars are fire - high in the sky! [click] Fire cannot truly be confined, although it can be controlled. Even so, it eventually escapes into the sky. Not surprisingly, fire is [click] associated with spirit, high ideals. Fire ideas can be very distant from the ideas of this Earth. While fire consumes, it also creates new life (forest fires remove the old and enable the new - some plants even wait for the fire to release their seeds!). Of all the elements, fire captures our attention the most. Archetypal fire goes high above the earth, is consuming, clinging and captivating and creates the new and removes the old.

    Fire is [click] raw energy.

.*Fiery people have [click] high spirits, great self-confidence, [click] enthusiasm, and direct [click] honesty and [click] openness. They project a radiant, [click] vitalising energy that glows warmly. They need a good deal of [click] freedom to express themselves so they can insist on their own point of view. They are [click] consumed - even entranced - by whatever they do. They are motivated by excitement, insight and intuition. That is, they get an idea which captivates them. They do not consider rational or logical thinking or practical feasibility. The idea comes to them fully formed and full of power. While the idea may grow over a period of time, it does not grow logically but intuitively. Sometimes fiery people do not know [click] why they must do what they must do!

Fire appears as if from nowhere, it grabs everyone's attention, and forces its way through almost everything, consuming the air, evaporating the water and chars the earth. Even the rocks are scorched or even melted (larva).

*Not surprisingly, fire people are [click] assertive, individualistic, active and self-expressive. Fire sign [click] energies can stimulate others, [click] but they can also overpower and exhaust them. Good natured and fun-loving, they may have many friends. They are generous with their time, energy, and resources. They value having a good time above material possessions. [click] They are generous but egoistic. Fiery people may believe so strongly in their own powers and abilities [click] that they fail to notice the powers and abilities of others. This may mean that they do not give others the credit they deserve, or it may be that they underestimate their opponents. They believe that "If you want a job done well, then do it yourself". However, they belong to a group that is [click] the most daring and capable inspiring natural leaders. They lead from the front. In war or business, they are out in the front leading the way. They are independent and individualistic leaders, rarely consulting others before they act. In fact, they may not even think things through to themselves, because their mode of thought is intuitive. [click] They are always "on stage" and need to be recognized and admired for their attainment and accomplishments. They consider being appreciated more important than being rich. Nothing hurts them more than being ignored. The fire sign sense of honesty is straightforward and often child-like. They believe everyone is like themselves an open book. This may lead them to be gullible and naive, or to others exploiting their openness.*[Just wait a little while. Encourage ideas.]

*[What were the needs of the first four signs? Aries need for the raw energy of survival, the Taurus need to physically touch and experience the material world. In Gemini, it is the intellect that man needs to develop in order to understand the universe. And in Cancer the need is eternal survival through perpetuation of the species.]

When their egos are turned inward, Leos become self-centered and tyrannical. Seeking to gain attention (consciously or subconsciously), they love to play the hero. At times this gesture is indeed noble, but feeling they already know what is best, they often neglect to learn what assistance is actually wanted and their misguided generosity becomes worthless to those they sought to help. Imaginative Leos envision grandiose schemes and many of them possess the talent to turn their ideas into reality. *Why would we say this? [Phase] Whats the mode for Leo?

    [click] [click] [click]

However, their tenacity becomes a valuable asset when it is demonstrated as loyalty to friends, or as patience and determination to succeed in completing a worthy project.

Does this make sense for a element of fire and mode of fixed?

*[click] How did Cancer react to everything they experience in life? [Answer: emotionally]

Gemini? [Answer: intellectually] Taurus? [Answer: by assessing its possible worth. Remember that Earth is associated with value.] Aries? [Answer: physically]

[click] Before they assess the practicality or worth of what they are doing, before they sort out their true emotions, and before they take time to reason things out intellectually, their tendency is to shoot first and ask questions later.

[click] Leos tackle projects others would not attempt, though they cannot help calling as much attention as possible to their efforts.

[click] Their penchant for exaggeration and overreaction works well in the theater, advertising schemes, and other situations where a "bigger than life" approach is desirable.

[click] Leos are often guilty however, of habitually turning a mundane problem or fairly routine situation into an overblown crisis, much to the confusion and annoyance of those around them. *[click] [click]***[click]*[click] The medieval legend of Parzival.

Although we may recognize this figure as Sir Percival from the Grail stories, Parzival, is in fact a much older figure, whose roots lie in pre-Christian Celtic and Germanic mythology. And probably, if we were to assign Parzival a sun-sign, he would be a Leo.*[click] Parzival is the epitome of the hero on the quest. As we have seen, the figure of the hero is close to Leos heart, since the sign is really concerned with the expression of unique individual potential.[click] Our mythical hero, like many other heroes, is fatherless at the beginning of the story, and grows up in a wood with his mother. He is ignorant of his origins, since his mother has been at pains to prevent him from discovering them. She is afraid he will leave her and go off into the world. So Parzival is nave and innocent in his comfortable next in the forest. One day a troop of knights drive through the wood, and Parzival sees them and talks with them. [click] He decides to become a knight. His mother, naturally, has hysterics, since this means he will abandon her. She tries to thwart him. But he is determined to seek his future, to find out what he might become. The nobility and chivalry of the knights have fired his vision and imagination.[click] So he makes himself a very inadequate suit of armour out of sticks and leaves, and rides off.*[click] Strangely, Leo is often fatherless, or has a difficult relationship with the father.[Then] It seems as though the deeper significance that underlies the sign requires a kind of search for a true Father, an inner self or spiritual core. And the call to leave what is known and comfortable for the sake of a dangerous but shining future is also characteristic of Leo.Often he must rebel against authority or social mores to begin his quest. No matter where you find him, Leo always has his eye on becoming bigger, better, greater. There is always something beckoning him, more attractive than the place he's in. *[click] So Parzival begins his adventures. After many ups and downs, [click] Parzival has a vision in a forest when he finds himself in a mysterious glittering castle, surrounded by incense and gold and strange figures.[click] There is a sick old king with a wound in his groin, who performs an elaborate ritual where the poisoned blood is drawn out through the point of a lance. [click] There is an enigmatic and beautiful woman who enters bearing a platter on which rests [click] a sword and an object which comes to be known in later Christianized legends as the Holy Grail - the cup from which Christ drank in the Last Supper. In the original story, the Grail - of Sangraal - is not a cup at all, but a stone - the Philosopher's stone of alchemy, the symbol of the eternal Self.[click] Parzival stares, bewildered at this drama, but does not say anything. His mother has taught him never to ask rude questions of strangers, and this people are even stranger than strangers. So he remains silent throughout the ceremony. Finally, [click] a great angry voice speaks and tells him he has made a dreadful mistake and failed everybody because the whole point is that he asks the magic question which will restore the sick old king to health and win Parzival the Grail Maiden as wife and the Grail Castle as inheritance. And the question is:[click] What does this mean? *Parzival awakens from his vision cold and alone in the wood.[Then] He realizes that he has been blind and ignorant, and resolves to find the Grail Castle again one day.The second part of the legend concerns the process of his slow maturing. Eventually, a man and a true hero, he rediscovers the castle after much pain and suffering and the passage of twenty years. This time he remembers to ask the question. And he discovers that he is really the son of the Grail King, and becomes the new King and custodian of the Stone of Life.*[read from slide then] The creative process doesnt really have anything to do with the audience. It is between Leo and himself, the think within him that creates. It is this discovery that an Other, a Something inside is capable of offering creative ideas and images through the medium of ones own mind and hands that is Leos most important discovery. Thats the road to the Grail Castle. The Leo who is courageous enough to pursue this road will come eventually to his own center. The showy Leo of traditional readings is usually either a very young Leo who hasn't awakened yet, or an older Leo who has lost the Grail Castle and hasn't the courage to try again. So he seeks his identity in the audience. But Leo is not really the showman of the zodiac. That role must go to Sagittarius, whose profligate ruler Jupiter is a much better representative of amateur dramatics. Leo's path lies within himself, although the fruits of his creative searching are often products that the world sees and acclaims. The psychology of Carl Jung is an excellent expression of this quest for the Self. Jung called the process of individualism the process whereby a man becomes himself. It is a lifetime's journey. The central motif of the Self, the inner essence of the personality, is paramount to Jungian philosophy. It isn't coincidental that Jung was a Leo. *Leos tendency towards self-centeredness can be irritating to other signs. But it needs to be seen for what it is:a powerful drive towards self-recognition. Leo also needs to understand it, because otherwise he can make the mistake of assuming that its the little me thats the object of all that energy. Then he really becomes insufferable. He can inflate, and think hes the most wonderful thing in the world.Gods chosen son to whom all the world owes obeisance. But if Leo ever understands that the Other is not him, but his source, then he has truly come to the vision of the Grail, and becomes a light which illumines the lives of others not by what he does, but by what he is - the true hero who has found his journeys goal.

*What are some types of energy? One energy is certainly the sun sign we are born in, but there are many other energies. Some of these would be the other astrological elements, our karmic history, our rays, our heritage, etc. And then to confuse the issue more there is the energies of the transiting and progressed planets.

There is no best or worse energy.

There is no good or bad energy - as there are not good or bad tools.

In astrology we refer (or should refer) to the energies associated with planets, houses, signs, and the relationships between them as non-challenging or challenging. The main challenge, as with each of the astrology energies, is to use the energies in a positive way. To think above the belt. To be the enlightened being. To turn the challenging aspects into non-challenging ones.

***Do any of these names surprise you?

Any that dont?*[Click] Its outer expression is kernelled in self-conscious activity; it has yet to leave the personal center of existence.*[Click] In Leo the royal sun sign the Sun is both exoteric and esoteric ruler. Leo and Capricorn are the only signs that have both the exoteric and esoteric ruler the same. [Click] Ray V this corresponds to the fifth principle of mana or mind (Leos mane mental aura), and Leos element of five.*[Click] The Labours of Hercules was written in 1936 by Alice Bailey wherein Hercules needs to complete 12 tasks one in each sign.

[Click] Each sign represents a different aspect of mans development.

[Click] This is the story of the individual Christ, crucified upon the cross of matter, and incarnated in each human being, God, incarnate in matter.*Hercules stands before the fifth gate, armed to the teeth with his vast array of weapons. [click] The people of Nemea, in deep distress, are calling for him to kill a lion that devastates their land and forces them to live in fear behind locked doors. Hercules, with listening ear, responds but decides to abandon the weapons which hinder his progress, trusting instead to his club for protection and the courage of his heart to speed him on his way.*The people are dismayed to find him without arms and with little knowledge of the lion, but Hercules proceeds undaunted [click] afraid yet unafraid, alone yet not alone. After days of searching, he suddenly comes upon the ferocious beast but stands his ground instead of running away as others have. His arrows find their target but the lion remains unscathed. Hercules rushes towards it, shouting wildly, and it flees before him. Eventually he tracks it to its lair, a cave with two entrances where, by blocking up one opening, he traps it. Now, with no exit for either of them, [click] Hercules faces the lion, and chokes and kills it with his bare hands. He then strips it of its skin and displays it to the Nemean people, now free to live in peace. In triumph, Hercules returns to his teacher, his success acknowledged by gaining permission to wear the lions skin, but who also warns, [click] the lion and serpents must be slain again and once again.*[click] This fifth sign of Leo is significant, for the number five is, esoterically speaking, the number of man. Each individual is a son of God as well as the quaternary of the lower nature of mind, emotions, vital body and physical sheath. In Leo, the human being knows he to be an individual and becomes aware of himself as the Self. [click] What does the lion represent? [pause let audience answer] We have, in effect, two lions pictured [click] Hercules, symbolising the lion of the Self or soul, and [click] the Nemean lion, the co-ordinated dominant personality of the lower self. Hercules defeats the lion only when he can corner it in a cave, unseen by anyone. Likewise in the dark, alone and unaided, the aspirant must defeat the lion of his own nature.*This sign can be seen both as [click] the culmination of the previous four labours covering the path of Probation and [click] as marking the beginning of the path of Discipleship. It is one of the four arms of the fixed cross in the heavens, the cross on which the Cosmic Christ and the individual Christ are ever crucified or sacrificed, for, in the unfoldment of the Christ consciousness in the form, stage by stage, various aspects of the divine nature are seen as being sacrificed. In Leo, [click] the lower reasoning mind must be sacrificed to the universal mind and the lower self of individual self-assertion conquered.

As an integrated personality, the aspirant often becomes a difficult person with a powerful mind and controlled emotions, very individualistic, self-confident and sometimes aggressive like the Nemean lion, running wild and menacing the peace. Today, with a world full of personalities at this stage of development, [click] the time has come when the lion of the soul must prevail over the lion of the self. Unlike Hercules, we are not alone in this struggle because leadership is increasingly being provided by a great group of people, subjectively linked to each other, directed by their souls, therefore, [click] group conscious and working towards the good of the whole.**Since the full moon is really the energy for earth the next month and thus the houses should not be used I have made this with the GMT time and the Wesak Valley in Western China as the longitude, latitude.

Since Im not an astrologer were going to do this a bit different. Ill read a fairly standard, regular, individual natal chart definition of how the energies work and then as a group we will discuss how these energies might work for humankind and earth itself.
