REFLECTION

EASTER LILLIES

Our Gospel today Jesus invites the three leaders of his group, Peter, James and John, to go with him up a moun-tain, to show them another angle on reality. The mountain is a place of encounter with God. Moses encountered God on the mountain, and so did Elijah, and it was a favorite place of prayer for Jesus too. It was where the eyes of the apos-tles, their spiritual eyes, were opened and they caught a glimpse of the as-pect of Jesus that their physical eyes could never see. Then they saw that the heavenly court was on the side of Jesus, and they heard the voice of the invisible God, “This is my Son, my Cho-sen, listen to him” (Lk 9:35). This was all the confirmation they needed. Jesus was indeed the expected one, for heav-en itself bore witness. Now they would listen to him and follow him all the way to his suffering and death in Jerusalem. No matter what happens they are now sure of one thing: God is with Jesus; final victory will therefore be his. How often we experience the absurdi-ties of life such that our minds are filled with doubt and we question: Where is God? At times like these we need to climb the mountain of prayer and ask God to open our eyes that we may see. When God grants us a glimpse of eter-nity then we realize that all our trou-bles in this life are short-lived. Then we have the courage to accept the suffer-ing of this life, knowing that through it all God is on our side. All it takes is a glimpse of heaven to empower us to take up our daily crosses and follow Jesus, knowing that the cross of Lent is followed by the victory of Easter.

A special part of the Easter celebration at our parish are the beautiful Easter lilies that adorn our altar. Lilies are a traditional Easter flower that symbolize a return from the darkness of the Lenten season, new life and hope everlasting. We invite all parishioners to share in the experience through a memorial or thanksgiving gift. Donations toward the cost of Easter flowers may be made in memory or honor of your family members and friends. This is a wonderful way to remember loved ones, honor friends, and offer thanksgiving to God for prayers answered and blessings received. The suggested donation is $10.00 per remembrance. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please use your Easter Flower envelope from your offertory set or visit the parish office for more information.

Next second collection will be March 30th and 31st for the Catholic Relief Services. The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out interna-tional relief and solidarity efforts. Pro-grams include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconcilia-tion work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless.
