LENT -- AGAIN!!

The sun is starting to think it's spring, yet the snow speaks of winter.Perhaps Lent will be the time to decide the season that God really has in mind - hemight be planning a new one - especially for you! Even the trees have enough senseto put on new leaves when the season is right. We must listen carefully ourselves.

Sooo... what might be helpful during Lent? Each person needs to decidepersonally. It could be fun to discover afresh, or re-affirm God's plan, directionor timing! 2. When the scriptures are read, the vision and power of God is presentto those who hear. To read a little scripture each day, and evento discuss it with a friend could be a terrific way to get in touchwith the movement of God's Spirit.

Lent again! Yes. Each is offered the possibility of a new season ofthe heart.

The February edition of the Waupoos News I I It's here I! We've even had a callall the way from Prince Edward Island from John O'Brien wondering if he'd soon begetting a copy of the News. And so, before the big Waupoos Snowlude on February 16that the Farm, here's what's been going on

While Snowlude will be going on at the Farm, here's what the Island lookslike these days....

A few people have been going down to the Island though.... Bill Collins, Mike and Kevinwent down with Mike Bell, John Kassotis and his son Peter. John is a terrific mechanicand it was great to have him spend time at the Island. But more than that, we hopethat he'll be back again to look at our machinery. How about coming in the summer whenthe Island is really in action, John? And thanks for bringing two snowmobiles down!

Now lest you think that all these men were winter camping, it's not reallytrue, since Fernley Davies turned on the heat in one of his houses, and everyone stayedthere where it was warm. Thanks Fernley!

A few items of Island 'gossip'.... Erin and Bob had a baby boy at the endof December — Welcome Matthew! And speaking of babies, did you hear that Marilyn andJim Collins had a bouncing baby girl on January 10? Welcome Jennifer!

Bill Collins and Mike St. Jean have been working on a brochure for Waupoos.A new brochure for Waupoos! It all came out of an idea of putting emphasis on thecommunity facilities on the Island. John Knoll, a Public Relations student at Algonquinhas been involved in this project.... we'll keep you posted in future editions of theNews. Speaking of community facilities on the Island, a message from the Island ManagemenlCommittee.... Sometimes in the past, families have been disappointed by not being ableto come to stay in the boatels because they have been booked. And sometimes althoughrooms have been booked, people don't turn up... it's hard to keep track of who's comingwhen... and if they're coming.... and so, the Island Management Committee requests thatyou reserve your rooms in the boatel by filling in the 'form on the next page.

This form is for community families and their friends — anyoneinterested in spending some time in the boatels.

The Waupoos Family Farm

There sure is a lot of news sinceour last edition! The WaupoosFamily Farm must be one of thebusiest places in the world!

The first item to tell you aboutis the great Summer Thanksgiving.More than 300 people came out tothe Farm - and that means thatmore than 300 people were in theupstairs of the barn and thefloorboards didn't give way'.Mass was held upstairs withBishop Fergus O'Grady as guestspeaker, and the mass concele-brated by Fr. Fred and Fr. Marty. It was a great event with each family being invited to take home a basket of fruit andvegetables. Marsha Byrne had made a horn of plenty which was beautiful, and there wasmore corn than you could shake a stick at, compliments of Bernie Brennan and John deKemp who had provided corn all summer long for everyone at the Farm. That was the SummerThanksgiving on September 23rd.

And then there was the real Thanksgiving — complete with a potluck supper for more than100 people, candles and table cloths. There must have been a million apple pies whichhad been made by Joy Hudson and her helpers Bill Hott, Barbara Bareham, Judy Mcllwain,Nancy and Bill Johnson. Those pies must have been good, because even Fr. Fred stayedfor dinner before saying mass'.

And then there was the Open House that Basil and Kathy had for all the neighbours.Slides were shown and Fr. Fred talked about Waupoos to the more than 50 neighbours whocame out. That weekend was Jennifer Kelly's graduation — so it was a memorable dayfor many people in many different ways.

Waupoos has had its second Families Retreat! A what?- A Families Retreat takes placeat the Waupoos Farm, and is an all day event for people who might not otherwise experienciwhat a retreat is. Thirty people participated in the retreat whose theme was "FindingGod in Pray, Work and Play", Elinor Jones shared about finding God in Work.

Wendy McNamara spoke about finding God in Play.Lorraine Gravelle shared about finding God in Pray.

It was such a good event that many follow up meetings have been had. There are twomain groups that meet: the EastEnd Group and the West End Group. The East End Groupis primarily made up of people from the Ridgemont Terrace area and the team is made upof Dave and Jean Farrell and Dorothy Claybourne. In the West End, the group is fromthe Penny Drive area and meets at Jean Wong's. The team is made up of Jean, Mike Bell,Anne Marie Bisson and Kathy Wren.

And that takes us up to Advent and Christmas, all our 'seasonal news'

turn the page for

Page 5: LENT -- AGAIN!! - St. Joseph · 2014. 4. 17. · had been made by Joy Hudson and her helpers Bill Hott, Barbara Bareham, Judy Mcllwain, Nancy and Bill Johnson. Those pies must have

Advent was a very busy time at the Farm. Each Saturday afternoon Judy Njeuheimer was theone responsible for the prayertimes. The first week, the theme was "Our Eyes, Ears andHearts Should be Open" and everyone made owl finger puppets. Joan and Bernie Reilanderand their family were at the Farm that weekend. The second week, the theme was "God LooksAFter us" and that was the start of the great rainbow that continued to grow all throughAdvent. Jacques and Gwen Sauve and Matthew were the family who hosted. "Messengers ofHope" was the theme of the third week and the symbol was a happy face. Alexandra andNino Travella were the couple hosting; and the final week, many felt hearts with initialsand glitter depicted "Temples of God". That weekend Wendy and Mike McNamara, Gregory andZachary were hosting.

And soon, it was Christmas.... a time of carolling, sleigh rides, tree decorating (with chocolate and mouldsto make ornaments supplied by Nicki Berube), freshly cuttrees with real candles tied onI

On Christmas Eve, Fr. Marty began by lighting the candles onthe tree and leading the procession out to the barn. Whenpeople got there, they were welcomed by Mary (Jennifer Kelly)Joseph (Mike Bell) and Baby Jesus (Todd Davies). Mary andJoseph were so pleased that so many had come to celebratethe birth of their son, that Christmas Eve. After thebig candle was lit, everyone lit their tapers and made aprocession to the lodge for the rest of the mass. After-wards , a grand reveillon was held where more than 125people partook of meat pies which had been made previcjuby a group of ladies. And, there even was a turkey!Pius, as he was so aptly named, having come from PiusHigh School. Two different Santas made appearancesthat week — one during carolling (Bill Potvin) anr3

one on Christmas Eve (Bill Frampton).

On Christmas morning everyone in the cottages andsome people from the city came out for a great Christmas brunch which was DELICIOUS'.',Over the Christmas week, the co-ordinators were Wendy and Mike McNamara and their sons, and in the cottages were Nancy & Bill Johnson and their two daughters, Judy Mcllwain andMaurice, Bill and Marie Frampton and their family, Sue Gagne and Brian; and Sue Gallantand her two sons Nicholas and Stephen who had come all the way from Prince Edward Island.

And after Christmas came New Years'. On New Year's Eve, about 125 people came out to theFarm for mass and to celebrate the coming-in of a new year. Phil Bott and Greg Gravelleprovided guitar entertainment and John O'Brien was the Old Year and Donalda Roy the NewYear. Donalda also entertained by tap dancingI Over New Years, the co-ordinators werethe Gravelle Family — Lorraine and Greg, and Danny and Jackie. Those in the cottageswere Seina Jankowski and her family; Nancy Price and her two sons, Barbara Bareham alongwith Scott and Lana; Gloria Lama along with her two sons and Elaine Stitt, her sisterRuth Ann and their families.

All in all, the Christmas holidays at the Waupoos Family Farm werea really blessed affair — with lots of 'passing it on' as peoplewere so generous. The birth of Jesus is truly a blessed event.

The Farm has hosted two children's weekends since our last News.... the one in Octoberwas run by Marsha Byrne, and because it was Hallowe'en, everyone went trick or treatingto all the cabins. The group also went to visit the fire station. Then in January, Patand Adele Sheahan were in charge and the group went to the police station, enjoyed agreat spaghetti supper and went skiing and skating. It x̂ as great funI

Last November, about sixty members of the Waupoos Community came out to the Lodge for ameeting to discuss and discern the Waupoos Outreach/Chaplaincy. The idea is to set upan outreach, made up of a group of people who are ready to go into people's homes f :>PRAY, WORK and PLAY.... to talk about and experience religious concerns: prayer, marriagisacraments, the church, the bible, etc....Good News would be acknowledged in the family/home setting. At the meeting Fr. Fred outlined a draft of a plan that was accepted bythe Board, and was coming to the community for support, understanding and clarity. Thedraft was sent back to the Board for the decision to 'GO'. Watch further issues of theNews to see what's GOing on.... how we're moving.... what's happening
