Leica Cyclone 7.1.1: Registering Scans in Cyclone

    PRE-REGISTRATION DATA CLEANUP

    Pre-Registration Data C leanup in C yclone:

If you would like to edit the data (clea n up or remove bad o r unuseful data) prior to a registration, follow the steps below.

    1. To clean noise or unwanted p oints from unprocessed/ imported point c loud -> Create/Open ModelSpace (MS) -> > Useselec tion a nd fencing tools to finish c leaning/deleting cloud -> Select c leaned point cloud -> Tools -> Registration -> Copyto Control Space -> Close MS

    2. Open C ontrol Spac e -> Selec t all should show 2 point clouds -> Selec t original cloud (selec ting single point that wasdeleted/cleaned in MS will select the original point cloud) -> delete the original point cloud so that only theedited/cleaned point cloud remains -> Selec t all (should be a single edited cloud) -> Tools -> Scanner -> Set scan worlddefault clouds -> Close

To register scans together in cyclone, go to Create Registration. Open the RegistrationFrom the Registration window, RC and add all of the ScanWorlds that you wa nt to register.Open the Cloud Constraints Wizard and choose 2 ScanWorlds that you want to add constraints to and click update.

    * Tip: To remove a picked point, simply selec t on the point again.

Next Pick at least 3 matching po ints between the 2 viewers. It is CRITICAL to use the Multi-pick button (single pick willerase all other previously picked points in that ScanWorld) and to also ZOO M IN C LOSE when picking points. Also p ick

points that are spread out across the scan a nd across different geometries/planar direc tions. Once the two scan viewsare aligned to one another, you ca n also use the Loc k button to constrain the two views so that they move/ rotatetogether. Once you have selected all of your points, selec t C onstrain from the Cloud C onstraints wizard or by going to theConstraint Add C loud C onstraint. If the Constraint does not work, pick more points and /or remove any ba d or incorrec tpoints.NOTE: Cyclone only uses 3 pick points; if you pick 4 or more cyclone will only use the best 3.

    OPTIMIZE CONSTRAINT

Once the constraint is succ essfully added, got to the Constraints tab, select the c onstraint then go to the C loud C onstraintmenu and select O ptimize Constraint. A histogram appears showing ea ch of the iterations being run a very steep curve onthe left hand side of the histogram is ideal. If the Optimize results come back as under constrained, the results may still be

usea ble in registration. A lways observe the Error Vec tor/RMS error from the constraint optimization, it should always be around.01m if it is not pick more accurate points and Update the c onstraint.

NOTE : Choosing points or using targets to place constraints aligns two individual ScanWorlds. G lobal Registration uses all of the c onstraints/ScanWorlds to spread the error among c onstraints throughout the p rojec t; In the registration, the ConstraintList tab has several options (continue to next tab for an explanation of these options.

    CONTRAINT LIST OPTIONS

Weight on constraints are created such that their error contribution to the g lobal registration is scaled relative tothe error contribution of HDS Target constraints with weights of 1.0; the value can be set from 0.0 (constraint hasno effec t on registration) to 1.0; a constraint set to 0.5 has half the influenc e of a constraint set to 1.0.Decreasing weight of a constraints with higher than a verage error is not rec ommended as it leads to lower

overall accuracy. You should decrease weight only if you believe the measurement of one or both of theobjects in the constraint are less accurate than the other constraints. The Error c olumn lists the error of eac h c onstraint after globa l registration; this is the distance between the twoconstraint ob jects after optimal registration for their ScanWorlds; Important: this number relates the individualconstraint error to the home ScanWorld and becomes relevant only when all ScanWorlds are registered therefore this value can be ignored (and may increase/ vary greatly) during alignment and should be reviewedonly after registration.Error Vector or Root Mean Square (RMS) error represents the error for the individual constraint between twoScanWorlds. This error is direc tly related to the a ccurac y and density of the da ta (a general rule of thumb isthat accuracy should be a 10% or better of point spacing).

To Unify Multiple Registered Point C louds > Select All > Tools > Unify Clouds > Options:

Reduce Cloud: Average Point Spacing (optional)Enter a va lue for that average desired spacing between any two points. This will subsample the da ta tothe entered resolution

Point Cloud Reduction (optional)Additional data reduction. If you are dealing with a very complex, large dataset some data reductionis recommended.
