A Letter from Bishop George Leo Thomas Greetings in Christ,

It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the Legendary Lodge camp experience. The beauty of the camp and its ministry environment are nothing short of extraordinary. For over forty years young people from all over Western Montana have come to the Lodge to encounter a week of prayer and fellowship, of adventure and joy! Legendary Lodge is an incredible tool for adolescent faith formation.

For a week, I invite you to leave behind the technological world, slow down and recognize God’s presence in yourself, in nature and in everyone around you. I invite you to join with other participants in teamwork and problem-solving activities, adventurous games, and quiet times for reflection which help deepen your appreciation of your Catholic faith. The well-formed and generous young adult staff at Legendary Lodge creates an environment which fosters the growth of faith through Scripture, prayers and Sacraments that are moving and age appropriate.

This summer our theme is Blessed & Sent. Camp participants will explore the immense depth of teaching in Christ’s Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:1-11 during their week at Legendary Lodge. You will be asked to immerse yourself daily in Scripture’s lessons of bold discipleship and spiritual practices, drawing you into a life-long relationship with the Lord. So this summer, come to Salmon Lake and be amazed at the growth you’ll see in your life. Young people are called to encounter Christ in their journey of discipleship. More importantly, at Legendary Lodge, they are also commissioned to return to their home faith communities as witnesses and messengers of the new evangelization.

Pastors, youth ministers and parents are invited to integrate some of the data from this booklet into your unique youth ministry programming throughout the year. Legendary Lodge is part of a whole year of dynamic faith formation in the Diocese of Helena. Keeping the experience connected to parish life is a priority.

Our Vision

Legendary Lodge summer camps provide a uniquely enriching faith formation experience by engaging, equipping, and serving the young disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Camps reflect our diocesan commitment to the development of the every child’s God-given six potentials: spiritual, intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, physical, and social.

Our Summer

This summer at Legendary Lodge campers will explore an in depth look at the Beatitudes or Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5:1-11. Our theme is Blessed & Sent.

The Sermon on the Mount is, in short, a body of moral teaching characterized by an emphasis on sincere devotion to God, and a corresponding heartfelt benevolence toward others. The emphasis, as this definition suggests, is on the heart. And, therefore, it is to the heart that Jesus directs his teaching. This is a bold camp theme. Youth at camp this summer will venture deeply into the beauty of Christ’s pursuit of their heart and the call to mission.

In addition to Lodge traditions such as daily Mass and youth led prayer experiences, the counselors will focus on teaching the facets of faith found in our creed. The workshops and sessions always include plenty of activity, small group interaction and outdoor elements.

Our Mission

Camps reflect the vision and leadership of both Catholic Formation Services and Legendary Lodge year-round staff. This collaboration ensures that Legendary Lodge is a facet of the dynamic faith formation that takes place in our parishes and schools as well as diocesan events. Collaboration between Catholic Formation Services and Legendary Lodge year-round staff includes hiring of summer staff and developing camp mission and curriculum with a special focus on connecting the camp experience to parish life.

A Typical Day at Legendary… Legendary Lodge is like no other Catholic summer camp. It is full of its own unique characteristics and legends that make it a priceless treasure in our diocese. The following is a typical schedule for a day at camp. The daily schedule is always subject to change because of weather and various programming circumstances.

8:30 a.m. Wake up

10:45 a.m. Workshops

11:45 a.m Break

12:00 p.m. Lunch

1:00 p.m. Camp Activities (swimming, canoeing, crafts, games, etc.)

2:30 p.m. Outdoor Activity

3:30 p.m. Break

4:00 p.m. Mass

5:30 p.m. Dinner

6:00 p.m. Small Group

6:45 p.m. Session

9:00 p.m. Cabin Chat (Gender Sessions)

10:00 p.m. Lights out

All the camps include some special activities as well (i.e. Skit/Talent night, dancing, interactive outdoor games, bonfire, reconciliation service, hike up and Mass on the mountain, etc.). These activities are woven into the weekly schedule to make a unique experience for each of the different age groups.

5th & 6th Grade Camps (Grades 5-6) Dates for Summer 2014:

Boys Camp: July 27-August 1

Girls Camp: August 3-August 9

5th and 6th grade camps at Legendary Lodge are about affirming the basics of the faith and introducing personal ownership of one’s beliefs. Youth are invited into action-packed community activities and hands on formation experiences. It is a week of fun, adventure and dynamic discipleship formation.

Middle School Camps (Grades 7-8) Dates for Summer 2014:

#1: June 15-June 20

#2: July 6-July 11

#3: July 20-July 25

Middle School camps at Legendary Lodge are about nourishing the adolescent faith and challenging personal ownership of a spiritual life. Youth are invited into practical discussions that look to challenge them towards a life of daily interaction with their faith. It is a week of fun, adventure and dynamic discipleship formation.

High School Camps (Grades 9-12) Dates for Summer 2014:

#1: June 22-June 27

#2: July 13-July 18

High School camps at Legendary Lodge are about establishing the seeds of a life of Catholic spirituality and faith advocacy. Youth are challenged in mature discussion to articulate their faith daily. It is a week of fun, adventure and dynamic discipleship formation.

The Leadership Camp Experience

!Leadership Camp is a High School camp at Legendary Lodge with all the same traditions and dynamic programming. It is also part of a greater journey. Youth engage each other in formative discussion and theme-based activity. Teens learn healthy discipleship practices and are commissioned as witnesses in their home communities. There are no “good byes” at the conclusion of the camp because it is really just the beginning. The camp initiates a year-long diocesan leadership development program called “Catholic Youth Coalition Board” which invites participants to gather five times throughout the year and continue their formation. Leadership Camp participants discern the Catholic Youth Coalition officers for the CYC Board in the coming year. Both CYC Board and Leadership Camp are separate opportunities and youth do not need to participate in one to engage the other. However, who would want to miss the excitement and joy of a Legendary Lodge experience that lasts all year long? All youth are welcome to participate in this extraordinary week-long experience.

Leadership Camp participants are traditionally identified by their faith communities as being examples of young disciples in search of intentional formation. Parishes in the Diocese of Helena have varying policies for nominating Leadership Camp participants. The Annual Catholic Appeal makes Legendary Lodge possible

!The actual cost of operating Legendary Lodge exceeds the fee we charge for attendance. The giving people of the Diocese of Helena through the Annual Catholic Appeal and major gifts make the Legendary Lodge Summer camp experience possible.

We are each and all uniquely gifted by God in a variety of ways. Owning up to those gifts, especially talents and abilities, is not prideful or egotistical but true humility when we credit God with our gifts and put them in His service. This is a primary teaching of stewardship and the ministry of Legendary Lodge.

Our unique gifts include our very lives and the time we have been given, our faith and the Church, our relationships, our work and vocations, our abilities and interests, experiences and passions, our intellects and personalities, our money and possessions, the environment and our citizenship, even our obstacles, weaknesses and mistakes.

Once we realize how generous God has been to us, we respond with gratitude by developing all our gifts to their full potential, using them well to serve others, building up the kingdom of God, and sharing them generously in proportion to what we have been given.

Talk about camp with your kids! Here are some points of discussion for youth ministers, pastors and parents to have before and after the Legendary Lodge camp experience. Please consider taking the time to read Matthew 5-7 and reflect on it with your children. Answer these questions for yourself and invest in a healthy ministry conversation with your child.

!• What does it mean to be poor in spirit (5:2)? Has there

ever been a time when you thought of yourself as spiritually poor?

• What does Jesus want his disciples to learn from the Sermon on the Mount?

• How does the Sermon on the Mount challenge you to grow in your spirituality? What steps can you take?

• Do you think you have ever prayed in front of others in such a way that you were more conscience of what they thought of you than you were of actually talking to the Father (6:5-14)?

• Who do you typically think of as blessed? What about them makes you think of them that way? How might you need to change your concept of blessing in light of Matt 5:11-12?

• Where does righteousness come from? What are some other scriptures that correspond with your answers?

• Can you identify parts of your prayer life that are focused on receiving honor from others, feeling good about yourself, or honoring God the Father?

Registration Information

!When can I register?

January 13, 2014 — Early registration begins for families residing within The Diocese of Helena.

March 3, 2014 — General registration begins, and is conducted on a “first come, first served” basis, until camps are full. This includes families residing outside the Diocese of Helena.

How do I register?

Registration is done exclusively online at showmyevent.com. Links can also be found at legendarylodge.com and dohyouth.org.

The registration fee for a camp season is $345.00 due upon registration.

If you are not able to register or pay online please call Mary Vogl at 406-442-5820 for assistance.

What if a camp is full?

Up to 10 campers will be listed as waiting for an opening for any full camp. Waiting campers cannot register unless a space becomes available.

If another camper cancels his or her registration, waiting campers will be contacted in a “first come, first served” manner. We will then invite the waiting camper to register in the newly vacated spot.

Campers can only be on a waiting list for one camp at a time.

What if I need to cancel my registration?

In order to be refunded your registration fee, you must let us know by the Wednesday prior to your camp start date.This allows us time to move a camper in from the waiting list as well as grant you a full refund.

What about financial assistance?
