Tigers Close in on MRC Titleby Dan RuudThe Belle Plaine High School

baseball team is on the verge of claiming the 2014 Minnesota River Conference pennant fol-lowing two more victories with-out a defeat this past week. The Tigers knocked off Norwood young America and Le Sueur-Henderson, both by six runs. The only thing that may have

prevented Belle Plaine, 10-0 in the MRC, 12-2 overall, from clinching the title before this edition of the Herald went to press was the weather post-ponement of Monday’s double-header at Sibley East, which will be played this Saturday starting at 10 a.m.Belle Plaine was scheduled to

host Holy Family Catholic in a nonconference game Tues-day night after this edition of the Herald went to press. The Tigers will resume MRC play at Tri-City United 7 p.m. this Thursday and will host Le Sueur-Henderson 4 p.m. next Monday.

Tigers 7, NYA 1The Tigers scored three runs

in the top of the first inning and that would be more than enough to top Norwood young America 7-1 in a MRC game Friday at NyA.Aaron Bigaouette led off the

game with a walk, which was followed by a Ben wagner sin-gle. Derek Dahlke then crushed a three-run homer.Norwood answered with a solo

home run in the bottom of the first but that was all they would get off Dahlke, who pitched the first six innings, allowing one run on three hits. He had seven strikeouts. Joe Hankins pitched the final inning and recorded three strikeouts. The Tigers added three more

runs in the fourth inning, which included singles by Cameron

Lark, Hankins and Bigaouette. Dahlke then singled to score two runs, bringing his RBI to-tal for the game to five. Aiden Ladd also singled in a run.Belle Plaine finished with

12 hits, compared to three for NYA. Dahlke finished up with three hits, as did Ladd. wagner had two hits and scored three runs. Getting one hit apiece were Bigaouette, Lark, Hankins and Chase Emmers.“This was a very well played

game and we really came ready to play,” said Tigers coach Pat Schultz. “Dahlke had a great game for us on the mound and at the plate, but the whole team contributed with great at-bats all night and excellent defense. “Bigaouette had another great

game at shortstop and Colton Hentges did a very nice job bat-tling the wind in right field and making it look easy,” Schultz continued.

Tigers 9, LS-H 3For a second straight Saturday,

the Tigers woke up early to play and win a game. This time, they headed to Le Sueur-Henderson for a 10 a.m. start and by early afternoon were back in Belle Plaine with their 10th MRC victory in a row.Back-to-back doubles by Big-

aouette and wagner gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning before a six-run explo-sion in the third made it 7-0 as Belle Plaine held on for a 9-3 victory.Emmers tossed three innings

of no-hit ball before giving way to what would be four relievers to finish the game. “He (Emmers) looked great on

the mound to start the game but the bullpen finished off to allow us to have everyone ready to go for three big games Mon-day and Tuesday before sec-tion seeding on wednesday,”

said Schultz prior to the Sibley East doubleheader postpone-ment. “The boys really came ready to play Friday evening and Saturday morning. Solid pitching and smart, aggressive at-bats early really set the tone for each game. Our entire team contributed to the victories and it is fun to see the great atti-tudes of the players each game and practice.”Pitching one inning apiece

following Emmers’ three in-nings were Bigaouette, Ladd, Hankins and Ryan Bremseth. Combined, they allowed just three hits.Offensive leaders for the Ti-

gers were wagner (two doubles, one RBI and a run scored); Big-aouette (a single, double and two runs scored); Emmers (two hits, two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base); and Ladd (two hits and one RBI). Dahlke, Dy-lan O’Brien, Colton Hentges and Lark all had a double, while Hankins added a single.

Tigers dropped a pair of games last weekend and is off to a 1-3 start for the second consecutive season. Last year got as ugly as 1-6 but eventually led to a second-place finish at state, so let’s hope the Tigers go 0-for-3 this weekend in Freeport! (Just kidding.)with a 6-2 loss to Elko and an

8-4 setback against the Prior Lake Jays in the rearview mir-ror, the Tigers are indeed off to the Black Sox Tourney in Freeport this weekend. BP will have a doubleheader on Satur-day with games at 10:30 a.m. against Beaudreau’s Bar (for-merly the St. Cloud Snappers) and 12:45 p.m. against the North St. Paul Roosters. with the six-team tournament

providing a three-game guaran-tee, the Tigers will play in one of the following games Sun-day: 5th place (11 a.m.), third place (1:15 p.m.) or the cham-pionship (3:30 p.m.). Follow @bptigertown on Twitter for updates.

with the Tigers easing into the May schedule as players and bodies round into shape, that will be the team’s only action for the week. The next contest will be Friday, May 23 when Arlington visits Tiger Park. Do you like to hit the links?

Elko 6, Tigers 2The Elko Express chugged

into town to take on the local nine. The Tigers were looking to avenge getting steamrolled by the Shakopee Indians last week, and this was the first chance to do so. Things looked good early as

Jake Fiedler threw a 1-2-3 first and then came up with a big two-run double in the bottom

frame. But that would be it as Elko’s Glenn Parker threw eight innings and kind of like former Twin Brad Radke, if he could just get out of that first inning, he would settle in. And settle in he did as Parker ended up strik-ing out 15. The Express scored three runs

in the third inning and never looked back. They nabbed one in the fourth and secured some breathing room with two more

in the eighth. Fiedler worked three innings

and recorded five strikeouts. August “Summertime” Farrug-gia worked five innings and sat down nine via strikeout. Trevor Latzke worked the ninth and K’d one. Team Tigertown only mustered

the MRC’s other winless team, Mayer Lutheran. Things will become more difficult again when Belle Plaine closes the regular season with a double-header at second-place Jordan this Thursday. Brackets for the section tournament will be re-leased later this week.

Watertown-M 7, Tigers 4The Royals overcame a an

early deficit with a three-run frame in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 7-4 victory last Tuesday in watertown.“we came out and scored in

the first inning but struggled again keeping them off the board,” said Belle Plaine coach Jeremy Kalal. “we’ve been talking about not giving runs back right after we score, and tonight we just didn’t close out innings. It’s very frustrating. we feel we are a better team than watertown, but we just haven’t been able to put a com-plete game together and show that we are better.”watertown-Mayer blew the

game open with three runs in the fifth inning before Belle Plaine came back with a pair in the sixth.Maddie Haller pitched the first

five innings for the Tigers and absorbed the loss after surren-dering seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. Maddie Studnicka pitched a scoreless sixth inning.Accounting for Belle Plaine’s

only five hits were Studnicka, Elizabeth Johnson, Kaylee Hentges, Maddi Lark and Hai-ley witt.

LS-H 6, Tigers 2Le Sueur-Henderson ace

pitcher Carlie Brandt pretty much handcuffed the Tigers on her way to a complete-game four-hitter last wednesday at LS-H.“Coming into a big week like

this we knew it wasn’t going to be easy, especially facing the best pitcher in the conference. I think we did a better job this time around putting the ball in play a little more often, but we couldn’t get hits to string together and mount any real kind of threat,” Kalal said. “I think we made some strides in the right direction, but against a pitcher like Brandt, you just have to be perfect to have a chance to win and we weren’t perfect.”Le Sueur scored twice in the

first inning and added another in the second to grab a 3-0 advan-tage. The Tigers scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings but the Giants countered in the bottom frame both times.Belle Plaine had just four hits

(Johnson, Hentges, Shields and Studnicka), the latter of whom was the losing pitcher after giv-ing up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks. Hent-ges pitched a scoreless sixth inning that included two strike-outs.

Tigers 5, NYA 2The Tigers may wish they

could play on Saturdays more often as they improved to 3-0

on that day with by far their biggest win of the year to date, a 5-2 upset of visiting Norwood young America, which came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A.“with the way we’ve been

playing, I doubt many people gave us a chance in this game,” Kalal said. “It was huge for us to shut them down in the first inning, and when we came out and scored four in the bottom of the first, it gave us a huge

The Tigers’ Maddie Studnicka pitched the complete game in her team’s 5-2 win over NYA in Belle Plaine Saturday.
