On the Menu: Lighting Design That’s Certified Energy Efficient For its new Times Square flagship store, Starbucks™ incorporated the look and feel of the surrounding theatre district as part of its new “neighborhood concept design” program – which meant lighting the store as a stage set. Over the last decade, Starbucks has worked closely with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to create energy-saving strategies for all retrofit and new building projects. With a company-wide goal of 25% energy reduction by 2015 – and LEED certification requirements – the Times Square Starbucks needed to maintain its new aesthetic while meeting environmental initiatives. Brewing a Big Change To accomplish those goals, Starbucks turned to lighting design firm Focus Lighting who chose LED Source ® and Toshiba LED lighting to “set the stage.” The design team used 73 PAR30 lamps (16.3 watts) and 55 MR16 lamps (6.7 watts) that consume up to 80% less energy and last up to 20 times longer than traditional halogen bulbs. Signature theatrical elements – including Fresnel lighting fixtures equipped with LED lamps and barndoors – were mounted on triangular trusses. Additional LED accent lighting was incorporated into the shelving and canopy. LED Lighting Case Study Starbucks The Toshiba PAR30 lamps were perfect in trying to create an image of old Broadway.
