Lecture #: 15Lecture title: Great Teams and Great Team Players
One of the main characteristic of a great team is that members of the team has a clear understanding of the teams purpose and goals. Good and honest communication and understanding among members of a team is also a major criterion for success as a team. A great team also has a balance between productivity as a group and satisfaction of individual needs. A great team also has a high degree of unity between members although this is not to the point of stifling individual freedom of members. Another important trait of a good team, is the ability of its leader to take advantage of the differing abilities of its members and that leadership is shared instead of being dominated by a select group of members. A critical trait of a good team player is the individuals ability to understand commit to the teams goals besides being friendly and concerned about each other. Great team members also acknowledges each other and confronts conflicts openly. Great team members also listens to one another with understanding and includes others in the decision-making process. Great team members also recognize and respect individual differences and contribute ideas and solutions together as a team. Good team members also recognize and award team efforts. Autocratic decisions may be made in the best interest of the team although this manner sometimes lead to the wrong decisions being made by an individual. Consultative decisions are made by consultation with team members although the power to make the decision is still held by the leader. Collaborative decisions are made by the team as a whole and with the collective wisdom of all the members, this usually result in better decisions being made with each member understanding the nature of the decision and therefore more implementation of the decision. The leader of a team needs to find a balance which fulfills the needs of the teams tasks, need of the team and needs of members of the team. A good leader is also open minded and acknowledges different points of view.
