The Perfect Tense

We use this tense to say what has happened and is now over,

eg. I played tennis last night.

For the perfect tense, you need 2 parts:

Part 1 – the present tense of ‘avoir’ (to have)

Here is a reminder of AVOIR -

Part 2 – a past participle, eg. joué

Il a joué = He played/He has played

This is how we form the past participle of regular ‘er’, ‘ir’ and ‘re’ verbs:

6

J’ai Nous avons

Tu as Vous avez

Il a Ils ont

Elle a Elles ont

On a

Page 7: L’eau · Web viewS2 “Bon Appetit” Name Class………………. Teacher In this Workbook you will find… All the vocabulary used in your French book Notes on …

7. choisir = 17. répondre =

8. rougir = 18. aimer =

9. réussir = 19. voyager

j’ai commencé mes devoirs et j’ai regardé un film avec mon frère.

Dimanche j’ai passé l’après-midi avec mes amis. Nous avons joué au football au parc et puis nous avons écouté de la musique à la maison. A cinq heures j’ai fini mes devoirs et j’ai téléphoné à ma grandmère.

THIS IS DIFFICULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11

Let’s think about this in English first of all as it’s something everyone finds difficult.

I watched the film at the cinema with my friends. I enjoyed it very much. It starred Matt Damon. He played a spy. Dad treated us to sweets and collected us afterwards. He picked us up in his new car.

Did you notice the verbs were all in the Past (Perfect) Tense? Did you notice they all ended in .....-ed. They followed a regular pattern so they are called Regular

Verbs.

However, in English, lots of verbs don’t follow a pattern! Look at this –

We went to the cinema. We took the train. We saw a good film. We bought popcorn.

Did you notice that again the verbs were all in the Past (Perfect) Tense? Did you notice this time none of the verbs ended in ....-ed?! They are all different from each other so they are called Irregular Verbs. There is no regular pattern. Let’s look at some examples in French.....

Let’s look at some common French verbs which don’t follow any regular pattern. As in Unit 4, we use them with J’ai, tu as etc.

J’ai eu I have had or I had avoir to haveJ’ai bu I have drunk or I drank boire to drinkJ’ai lu I have read or I read lire to readJ’ai pu I have been able to or I was able to pouvoir to be able toJ’ai vu I have seen or I saw voir to seeJ’ai dit I have said or I said dire to say/to tellJ’ai écrit I have written or I wrote écrire to writeJ’ai mis I have put or I put mettre to put (on)J’ai pris I have taken or I took prendre to takeJ’ai été I have been or I was être to beJ’ai fait I have done or I did faire to make/to doJ’ai découvert I have discovered or I discovered découvrir to discover

Did you notice... These are mostly verbs we’ve already met. Look at the infinitives on the right. Mostly these are verbs which in English don’t end in –ed! So – they are Irregular Verbs in English and in French!

Page 12: L’eau · Web viewS2 “Bon Appetit” Name Class………………. Teacher In this Workbook you will find… All the vocabulary used in your French book Notes on …

Activity 7 What do the following mean? Do all of these!1 J’ai été à Paris. _____________________________________________2 Tu as écrit un email? ________________________________________3 Il a mis un pullover. __________________________________________4 Elle a lu un poème. __________________________________________5 Nous avons dit ‘bonjour’. _____________________________________6 Vous avez vu le match? _______________________________________7 Ils ont fait le shopping. _______________________________________8 Elles ont bu un café. _________________________________________

Activity 8 Again work out the meaning of these. Do at least 5 of them. Use the box to help you if you get stuck. They are all in the Perfect Tense so they all happened in the past.

1 J’ai été en France. ____________________________________________2 Ma mère a fait du shopping au centre-ville.

___________________________________________________________3 Nous avons pris un pique-nique à la plage.

___________________________________________________________4 J’ai vu le train arriver à la gare. _________________________________5 Ma petite sœur a écrit une lettre au Père Noël.
