If I had 1 Euro for every time I have heard that question I could give up teaching. The answer is it varies, it depends on a variety of factors. For instance; the level of English the learner wishes to acquire, not everyone needs or wants to be fluent in a second language, someone who wants to use English on holiday does not need the same level of English as someone who needs it for business purposes. As a result some people acquire English as a foreign language in 1 to 3 years, whilst others might take from 4 to 10 years! You can't give accurate time frames for learning.

There has been a lot of research done in this area, it shows that effective learning is influenced by many factors, some of which are:-

No, English is an easy language to start learning for the following reasons:-

- it has no genders. Apart from people, all objects are 'neuter', not 'masculine' or 'feminine'. So you say 'it' for such things, and do not need to learn any genders. - it usually has easy verb endings. Apart from a few 'irregular' verbs, verb endings are easy, and hardly change. - adjectives remain the same for all words - there are no different endings to learn. - the singular and plural pronoun 'you' is the same. - when saying 'you' there is no need to decide whether to use a polite form, or an intimate form.

Learn them, but don't use them, they can be quite open to misinterpretation.

Make sure any DVD you buy or rent has the film or programme in English with your native language (both as the spoken word (dubbed) and with sub-titles) and that it plays in your area (why did they do that). You can usually check on the back of the DVD.

I recommend my intermediate to advanced students to watch DVDs in the following way.

- Watch the DVD all the way through in English only (no sub-titles).- Watch it again (scene by scene) in English with your language as sub-titles. Repeat scenes as necessary.- Watch it again in (scene by scene) in English with English sub-titles. Repeat scenes as necessary.- Watch it again in your language all the way through with English sub-titles.- If you aren't sick to death of it yet watch it again in English all the way through with no sub-titles.- As you watch the film scene by scene make a note of the main new vocabulary, especially new phrases.

I don't really work on levels. I let people find their own level or as I prefer to call it 'comfort zone'. So, just join in with any practise areas (where I provide corrections), conversations (where I provide general feedback) or games (where I join in) that you feel meet your needs.

It depends on what level you are. Graded readers can be a good start. Keep it simple. Don't be afraid to pick up a children's book or comic to start with. Try to read something you are interested in. Make sure you have fun whilst reading. Try to find someone who likes to talk about books. Find a book group on the web that has discussed the book and see what they think about it. If your English is good enough, join in with the discussion.

1. It is easier to answer this by number of words. Most beginners' courses reckon on 1000 words of vocabulary as a rock-bottom minimum (if you are going to be at all serious!). If you want to be able to speak in a wide range of situations, you should aim to learn at least 2000 words. The number of phrases that a speaker stores is normally many times larger than the number of words the same speaker knows. According to the Global Language Monitor as of 19th May 2005, there were approximately 866,349 words in the English Language, plus or minus a handful. So, choose carefully which ones to learn. 2. This is a difficult question to answer. I can only say that my friends and I would never hate or exclude anyone because they spoke with an accent or made small mistakes. I'm much more interested in what you say than how you say it. The best advice I can give you is to retain a sense of humour about the situation and be proud of yourself for being bi-lingual. If anyone is rude to you then you probably wouldn't want to know them anyway!

Don't worry too much about "hearing" the words in your head, that's not what's really slowing you down, you just need to learn to read faster. As you speed up you'll find the "voice" will either catch up with you or disappear altogether. I have some articles on speed reading techniques that may be helpful.

I love the fact that money is no object - that will make things much easier for her. But support (yours and others) is important too. Invite any native speaking friends round to chat as often as possible, (once she has settled don't do everything for her) give her small tasks to do that involve going out and about and I would strongly recommend that she goes on a course with other learners (it helps to know other people are in the same situation), initially concentrate on conversational English, only when she has gained confidence consider some more formal courses that may involve tests. When choosing a

course try to find a school that is a member of Arels-Felco Ltd, a non-profit organisation recognised by the British Council as efficient in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language. Its members follow a certain code of conduct and regulations that guarantee high academic standards. The actual meaning of fluency is being able to speak a language easily, well and quickly. To achieve real fluency it's best to live and study or work in an English speaking country. I say study and work, because I know of many people who live in an English speaking country, but they never achieve real fluency. It's an unfortunate fact that just living in a country doesn't mean you'll pick the language up. Depending on how much work they put into it and how much real help they get people can take between 4 and 10 years before they achieve real fluency, and I'm afraid some people never really manage it. The sort of help I'm talking about is constructive critisism and correction. So:- "Most people tell me that I am not fluent in English. I want to join the airline industry, so I want to learn about fluency."

Good question, but I don't think there's any such thing as "standard" English outside the country it's being spoken in. The history of colonialism was responsible for the spread of English as a dominate language. From approximately 1600 to modern times, it was the armies, navies, merchants and missionaries, who traveled all over the globe distributing their language and culture (McCrum, Cran, and MacNeil, 1986, p.19). In fact Kayman (2004) points out that English was originally forced upon other parts of the world in conjunction with the colonization of certain areas. Naturally the advancement of English was associated with the spread of the British Empire (p.6). But there has been a shift from British English to more American English. This came about mainly after the end of Second World War (Berns, 2005, p.87 and Kayman, 2004 p. 11). At that time America was viewed favourably by many people. And even today popular American culture is extremely influential along with American dominance in the global marketplace. But I think we are starting to move away from an individual style of English to a more global one. And really your native language has more influence on the pronunciation of the English you end up speaking.

Hi, Sorry for the delay in replying, but I couldn't access the service. Egypt isn't alone in this. A lot of the teaching available in other countries is not very good. I presume she was looking at someone. When we interpret something we try to make sense of it, or assign a meaning to it. So it could be she was watching this person and trying to read his / her expression or body language. To be completely certain, I would have to read the whole thing.

43. Why do people in the UK end every sentence with a question, & in America they don't? For example: The British always seem to say, "isn't it?" -- or "really?" after every sentence, with a kind of inflection?? I think this is a grammar question, but I'm not sure! Well to be honest we don't "always" do it, do we? :-p I think it's because the British tend to be self-effacing, and Americans are raised to be more bullish.

"It turned out she’d broken her leg" - What she did. "tripping over one of her cats," - How she did it. Just think of it like:- She broke her leg skiing. How did she break her leg? Skiing. Of course, a lot of people break their leg skiing, but not many people break their leg tripping over cats, but the author is using the same form.

Panic. Sorry, but come on - 15 days? The best thing you can do is attend an intensive / total immersion course, but I warn you, they can be very expensive, and without knowing your current level, or your aptitude, I can't say how successful it would be for you. Good luck though.

It's fine to learn and practise on your own, and it will help to a degree, but it's much better to get real feedback, either from your peers, friends, or a teacher, (if you can afford it). Most self-checking exercises like gap fill and multiple choice exercises (including my own) are limited when you try to express yourself freely, which is why I give word for word correction in some parts of the forums.
