N°1 – FEBP.IN.O.K.I.O.
Pupils for INnOvation as a Key to Intercultural and social inclusiOn
IntroductionP.IN.O.K.I.O. (Pupils for INnOvation as a Key to Intercultur-al and social inclusiOn) is a European project aimed at pre- and primary-school children during the period 2009–2011. The purpose of the project is to develop methods of support-ing positive communication among children of different lin-guistic and cultural origins, using characters from children’s literature. It will involve schools and families in a learning process based on a specifi cally created model.
The project is co-funded by Comenius Multilateral Projects, a sub-programme of the European Union Lifelong Learning Programme 2007–2013 with the objective of strengthening and integrating the actions of Member States. Each state is, however, responsible for the content of its own national (curriculum) teaching and training programmes in respect of cultural and linguistic diversity.
About the projectAt the European level the P.IN.O.K.I.O. project aims to contribute to the development of fi ve of the eight key compe-tences recommended by the European Union (Rec. 2006/962/EC). The project will create and experiment with an innovative training system using the stories and characters of fairy tales and children’s literature as a tool to promote intercultural dia-logue against social exclusion. This activity has been planned for use in schools with children aged from 3 to 11 years.
Teachers and immigrant and non-immigrant children and their families will take part in the project in three different European Member States.
By introducing and building on characters and make-believe stories that are culturally diverse and culturally shared, the following key competences among those selected by the
European Union will be improved and developed through the use of computer and creative tools:
KC1 Communication in the mother tongueKC5 Learning to learnKC6 Social and civic skillsKC7 Sense of initiative and entrepreneurshipKC8 Cultural awareness and expression
European yearly topics will also be used in developing these skills, in particular
2008 – Year of Intercultural Dialogue2009 – Year of Creativity and Innovation2010 – Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion
