Dick Vermeil

When he returned to the college, now known as Napa Valley College, as

head football coach in 1963, he thought it would be his final move. He hadalready led two successful high school programs and worked as assistantcoach at the College of San Mateo. That was the beginning of Vermeil’s

long career in football. Some of his career highlights include:

Dick Vermeil went to Napa Junior College because hishigh school football coach motivated him to think beyond

working in his dad’s garage.

Leading the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl victory in January 2000;

Taking the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XV in January 1981;

Being named NFL Coach of the Year in 1979 and 1999;

Coaching the UCLA Bruins to a Rose Bowl victory over #1 ranked OhioState University in 1976.

Principle 1-

Leaders Must Like People They must be a people person. (you must be

personally involved with your people to know whatmakes them tick).

Critical that leaders make people feel important.

Make people feel their contribution is important.

Commitment must move from the head to the heart.

Principle 2-Some times are more important than

others to show that you care Show more that you care after the bad plays.

(Everyone congratulates a winner. Everyoneremembers their failures and how they were treatedafterwards).

Let them know their day will come.

They need encouragement most when they havefailed the most.

Principle 3 –

Be a Good Example Actions should be louder than words.

Be what you want those who follow you to be.

 You communicate power and influence by yourenthusiasm. (especially in the tough times)

 Admit your mistakes but minimize your self inflictedwounds.

Principle 4 –

 Atmosphere / Appreciation Don’t keep good efforts a secret.

Recognition and praise will encourage the recipientand motivate others to greatness on the team.

When a team is treated positively, the worth of the

whole team rises.

Treat everyone with the same respect. (Perceivedfavoritism will fracture a team)

Principle 4 –

 Atmosphere / Appreciation How adversity you can disregard is just as important as the

adversity you can take on.

Keep a positive attitude

Don’t internalise mistakes and don’t equate mistakes withself value.

Keep smiling, don’t blink and don’t blame!

 Adversity is the only way to measure commitment andattitude.

Principle 4 –

 Atmosphere / Appreciation Show appreciation for loyalty. Develop internally and

inspire their capabilities.

Define what it takes to win – “The main thing is the

main thing”.

Zero in on the difference makers

Define – Delegate and Lead by example.

 Atmosphere / Appreciation When striving to be decisive, you will seldom have

all of the information or it would be a forgoneconclusion.

Remember the only endeavors that you start out ontop… is digging a hole.

Principle 5 –

Be Sincere Establish credibility over time.

Good Ego – Good ; Great Ego -BAD

 As you get older you can only be yourself –you are the onlyone uniquely qualified to be yourself.

Never be satisfied with existing excellence.

Carry yourself like a winner.

Surround yourself with people that are competitive and arewinners.
