What is leadership?

Leaders are born and they are made too,You are surely a born leader and you can be made a great leaderGreat Followers make Great leadersA Process of influencing an individual or Team to do something that they otherwiseNot do. Effective leadership qualities grow with practice

Two kinds of peopleThere are two kinds of people on earth today,Just two kind of people , no more I say,Not the good and the bad , for tis well understood. That the good are half bad and the bad are half good.No. The two kinds of people on earth I meanAre the people who lift and the people who lean.Old poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox 21 irrefutable Laws of Leadership , John Maxwell, Magna Publishing Co Ltd ISBN 81-7809-038-4

QualitiesIf you think you can, it is your thinking, but if you believe you can you surely canLeaders have dreamWinners, Have Execution powers to.Ambitions to achieve the dreams and goals is what drives some one to become leader. Unmatched passion and non ending energy is required to acquire these dreamsLeaders posses a strong hold of subject knowledge they are dealing with , but on general knowledge also. Going against the wind is not a good strategy, but setting your sails as per the wind will lead you towards the goal

Leadership quality of a dog

The dog grumbled strongly and kept on chewing the bones sayingWow these lines taste the best, no other meat is as tasty as that of a line. If I get one more lion it will be a great dayThis monkey is useless. Full one hour has passed and could not manage a single line

Monkey sitting on the tree was watching. The lion thought that monkey has laid the trap . He killed the monkey and ate itMoral of the storyThere are many such monkeys around us try to identify themNever under estimate yourself, keep yourself focused. You are what you pretend to beIf hope ends there is nothing you could ever think of being your self, So keep your hopes alive

How can you become leader?Accepting leadership challengesBy Believing your abilitiesLearning new traitsAccept different and difficult taskBringing ChangeBy Behaving DifferentlyCommunicating EffectivelySetting higher Goals

Leaders look for opportunities and leadership challengesVicky is one of the only three cricketers who scored 70 centuries in test and one day matches and scored 13000 runs was asked the secret of his ability to find gaps.

Every batsman surveys the field before taking guard and usually the fielders [ obstacles] get imprinted in the mind. But in my mind I dont see the fielder[ obstacles] . I only see the Gaps[ opportunity]

1

It is hard to beat a person who never gives up .. Believe your abilities Story of AdkinsAdkins was an entertainer- musician who played rock and roll, country and blues He was a one man band Simultaneously he would sing , strum guitar and play drums- with his feet. Thats not all, he played piano and the harmonica slung around the neck. He would keep array of instruments around him when he performWe all have beliefs of about what we can do- and more importantly what we can not do.We grow up believing our limitations and weakness. Our belief of what we can not do limit our achievements. If you want to change the outcomes in our life , start by changing our self

2

Never give up

Learning New SkillsSeveral years ago a bright little boy in a government school in Kerala had a dream. He wanted to be a doctor. He did well in school. Everybody was convinced that he would become a fine doctor. He wrote the entrance exam but failed. He was shocked but did not loose heart. He did BSc and then Masters. Worked in a IT firm. And later he was a cofounder and CEO of a great Indian IT company Who is he?3

Leaders Accept different and difficult task As you go chasing your goals your dreams and ambitions, disregard the people who tell you it can not be done. The deaf ear to the critics and nay Sayers. Ignore them all. And Go for it Chase your dreams . Giving up easy. Getting to your goals is hard. And as he saw their gestures and shouting he thought they were cheering him on. What he has perceived as encouragement inspired him to try harder and succeed against all odds

Leaders Dream

Setting higher goals5Power to change our lives and chart our future lies within each one of us. Resist the temptation to blame others for your plight. When you blame other people you take away your inherent power to change, thereby weakeningyourself. And taking responsibility for yourselfis really what separates winners from losers.

Leaders communicate effectivelySome time a single line can make a huge difference. It was something you read somewhere or something that was said to you. It may stay in your mind and become guiding factor.

It was Sunday morning. The task ahead was simple. To run ten miles . Started quickly and enthusiastically. After continuing half the distance felt could not continue. Felt legs would fold up and collapse. Those words did magic- Dont run just with your legs but with your mind What has happened there after could not remember but could finish the entire ten miles6

Leaders behave differentlyWhen you moan and say this is bad , the mind set gets conditioned to look for difficulty in opportunity. And when you say this is good , the mind looks for opportunity in difficulty. And there in lies the difference between winners and losers.Let us look at Dave s story.. A musician horrified to find his $3500 guitar damaged by baggage handler.. Complained ?

Leaders Bring the changeMost of our problem appear as they do because of the way we look at them. You get back what you give. Let us look at the story of evil monster and little boy

Monster a Curse or boon

Little boy took out an apple and offered to monster. The monster gave back two delicious apple

Man hit the monster with a sword. The monster took twice the size of the sword and sliced himChange the way you look at it and see the difference8

It was so cold, the bird froze andfell to the groundin a large field1.Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy

A little bird was flyingsouth for the winter.1

While it was lying there, a cow came byand dropped some dung on it. As thefrozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung,it began to realize how warm it was. The dungwas actually thawing him out. He lay there allwarm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy2

A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under thepile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!32.Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend3.And when you are in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!

Leadership LessonsFrom the secret of leadership PRAKASH IYERNarrated by Dr R Soundararajan

A Case StudyLeadership and tea cup

It is really who you are at the core that makes the differenceLesson 1: What counts is What is inside the tea bagQuality of beverage is determined by the tea inside the bagNot the label or string

What really matters is the kind of person you are deep down

20

Lesson 2:The real flavour comes through only when the tea bag gets into hot waterLike wise the character of the leader shines through in adversity. How does the person behave under pressure.

Wow I enjoy in hot water.

Lesson 3Good tea bag look forward to getting into hot water

I dont wait to get into hot water. That is my place

Like wise great leaders relish a challenge. They love their opportunity to test their skills and prove their real mettle

Lesson 4 Tea bag must be porousImagine the best tea put in a bag that is impermeable. It wont work

What is the use? I have to come in contact with hot water for you to enjoy my flavour

In our life too we can not survive and thrive in isolation. Leaders need to be careful not to build walls around themselves, that prevent people from reaching out to them.

Lesson 5 Tea bag works , never mind where they are in the cup

Once you Dip the tea bag , it does not matter , where the tea bag sits. It could be at top, on the side or at the bottom.. It still works

Position is irrelevant for leader. Leaders derive their strength from with in- not from title or a position in the organization

Lesson 6Some time one tea bag is not enough

If the pot is large then one tea bag is not sufficient to make a good beverage.

To make it strong and effective I join hand with another tea bag. Ha Ha ha Too often good leaders get branded as failure not because they were not good enough, but because challenge was too big. Asking for assistance is not sign of weakness, it is often a sign of great strength and self confidence

Lesson 7Some time you have to add milk and sugar

If you want cup of tea with milk and sugar , no tea bag in the world can give that to you by itself . You need to add milk and sugar

I join hands to meet the end result and objectives

Some time business needs complementary skill and no single leader can provide. They find partners to complement the skill

Lesson 8 Some one hold the string alwaysNo matter how strong the tea bag is , it recognizes that some one else holds the string in his or her hand. They can pull the tea bag out and throw it away anytime they like . No question asked.

You can pull me anytime. No question asked. No matter how powerful the leader is , he must remember there is string tied to him that is in some Other stakeholder.- Customer, or shareholder or Board. The realization of this truth can help ensure that leaders dont let power go to their head

Lesson 9Its all about how good the tea is . Not tea bagNobody ever drank a cup of tea and said, wow , that was a great tea bagHe would say, That was great cup of tea

In ultimate analysis, leaders get remembered not for how good they themselves were, but for how good their teams and Institutions that they built were. Too often leaders get caught up with looking themselves, in the mirror rather than turning the spot light on their teams , their organizations and their results.

Turn the spot light on teams , organizations and their results.

Lesson 10 Eventually ,teabags need to make way and get outTea bags recognize that once the brew is ready they need to move on. They dont worry that that if they were to move out of the cup

They dont worry that that if they were to move outAlas too many leaders see themselves as being indispensable and overstay. They get so much taken with their abilities and greatness that they start believing that if they were to leave their organization would not survive.

Last But not the least

The leaders do the right things

Thank you
