LE ROY CHRISTIAN CHURCH The Cornerstone The Cornerstone Newsletter Date: July 22, 2014 Newsletter Date: July 22, 2014 Issue 15 Issue 15 - DIGITAL EDITION DIGITAL EDITION Up Front with Jeff… Up Front with Jeff… Reflections on the Church Camp-out As I sit at my desk there is a smile on my face this morning. We are coming off a church camp-out that couldn’t have gone much better if we would have scripted it ourselves. We had a blast! The food was delicious. The company was great. The fellowship was sweet. The weather was perfect. What more could you ask for? I know some people had to work, some were on vacation, and others were tied-up with family trips. Howev- er, if you missed this experience you missed one of Le Roy Christian Church’s highlights of the year! The worship service out at Honker’s Island was special too. I have always en- joyed being outside more than inside anyway. To be able to praise & worship & sing & fellowship in the beautiful surroundings of Dawson Lake is a spiritual ex- perience I won’t soon forget. Thanks to Rod & Denise Noe for all the hard work & special touches they put in to make sure that everyone had a good time… thanks to Joe Willis & Frank Lunn for leading worship for BOTH services & to our men for taking care of all the logistics… & to anyone who had a part in pulling off this event! The greatest thing I witnessed this weekend was the church being the church and it resulted in a family camping next to us joining us for worship. IF we do that every week watch how God will grow His church! Blessings, Jeff (Check out more camp-out pictures on the Church facebook page).

YM UPDATE

Ready to Rest

Ok, a number of statements need to be made about the events of last week. First

of all, the weather we had for HS Cycling Week and HS Main Camp at Little Galilee

last week was nothing short of answered prayer. Thanks to all of you who prayed

for good weather because we got it! It really helped a long week out on the roads

and trails of Central IL, which normally are suppressed by sweltering temps and

humidity in mid-July. Who has a Polar Vortex in the middle of summer??? We do!

Second, the week of camp itself was good. Our campers proved to be more than

they thought they were at the beginning of the week. Some found that they were

physically stronger than they gave themselves credit for. Others found that they

had deep spiritual insights into God’s word and will for their lives. Everyone at both

weeks were challenged to find our identity in who God created us to be…a good

message for maturing teens. Finally, my long week was capped off by some good

outdoor fellowship at Moraine View during the LCC Camp Out and the early worship

service on Sunday. So with all that pedaling and activity over the last several days,

I’m a little leg weary. I can’t rest much with VBS getting bigger on the horizon, but

I’m hoping to catch a nap or two in the next week. Thanks again for your prayers

and support. Keep it up!

Don’t miss our family Drive-in Movie Night at LCC 5:30-8:30pm. Please call or

email me in the office so that I can plan to have enough supplies and food for eve-

ryone; August 13, Pool party at REPLEX, 6:30-7:30. Call us in the office (309-962

-6491) to get more info and to RSVP for the events.

This Sunday, our youth group will be joining a few others from the area for Ainesis

out at Dawson Lake. If you have fish you can donate to our meal, please let me

know. If you don’t like fish or fishing, consider making a dessert or a side dish of

some sort (Thanks in advance to Barb Whiteman for the 100 cupcakes and cookies

she’s making for our event!!). It’s going to be a good summer outdoor get-together.

Help us make it that much better.

VBS is less than 2 weeks away!! We have a few people in place but can always use

more. We are still in need of group guides and missions coordinators. Check out

our list in the foyer to see where you can help out. VBS is always a great week

around here, so be sure to be a part of the action. We’ll be meeting on Sunday

July 27 at 4pm for everyone working with this year’s production to set the

tone for prep week and the BIG week. VBS happens August 3-8. Join us!

Stay cool out/in there,

Joe

FALL FESTIVAL DINNER 2014

Monday, August 18 The Church will again be serving dinner to the Fall Festival workers. Anyone who has worked in the past knows what a rewarding experience this is, and the people are so thankful to us for doing this for them. We needs LOTS of help for this event—women to cook in the after-noon, people with strong backs to carry the tables and chairs to and from the Carpenter’s Inn, help in transporting the roasters of food, peo-ple to serve in the evening, AND especially donations of salads and des-serts. We will also accept cash donations to defray the expenses to the Church. Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board for these areas. If you have any questions, call Carole Hillard or Marge Rafferty.

“YOU JUST GOT JOY’D” A week ago, in Jeff’s sermon he encouraged the congregation to do a “random act of kindness” for someone. We printed off the “Joy’d” cards and enclosed them in the bulletin this past week, however, we forgot to explain what you were to do with them. These cards are for you to pass out when you do an act of kindness. One example of such an act would be to pay for the order of the person behind you in the drive-up line at McDonalds or Arby’s. Simply tell your server you want to pay for the order for the car behind you and ask the server to give them your card when they pull up to pay.

FOOD PANTRY NEWS

The Food Pantry served 20 households on July 14 and 17 households on July 21. Thank you to the IGA for drawing our Church’s name in the weekly drawing. And, thanks to whoever wrote our name on their receipt stub! We won $102.00! The Pan-try needs mustard, cake mixes, frosting, peanut butter, jelly, and paper towels.

MERCY MINISTRY

The Mercy Ministry/Benevolence Fund is quickly running out of money. Both of these funds are community-supported ministries and offer “one-time only” assistance. The Mercy Ministry benefits those travelers passing through Le Roy who need help with gas, lodging, food, etc.; the Benevolence Fund offers assistance to Le Roy resi-dents with rent/mortgage payments and utilities. For information on how you can contribute to these funds, please contact the church office. Your help is greatly appre-ciated.

HOP ON FOR HOPE BIKE RIDE

The 3rd annual “Hope on for Hope” Bike Ride is a fundraiser for The Village of Hope in Guatemala, founded by missionaries Todd and Amy (West) Block. This 10-50 mile Bike Ride/Family Fun Walk will start from the Methodist Church parking lot. 25-50 mile rides will be around Moraine View Park. COMMUNITY MISSION PROJECT

The adult mission group of the Le Roy United Methodist Church is asking the com-munity to join them in a late-summer, extended-weekend project to replace the roof on Gyorkos’ home. Julie Gyorkos is the director of Faith Second Chance Thrift Store in downtown Le Roy.

The group is seeking donations and volunteers to help with this mission. Money may be donated for the purchase of shingles ($16.67 per bundle), rolled sheeting ($11.18 per roll), or a cash donation of any amount. Donations may be sent to Le Roy UMC, 201 N. Chestnut St., Le Roy, IL 61752, or dropped off at the Methodist Church between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Checks may be made payable to Le Roy UMC with “Gyorkos Roof” written on the memo line. If you would like to help with the installa-tion of the roof, please let Phyllis in our office know, or call the Methodist Church office, 309-962-7091, anytime. All help is appreciated.

CARDS in BULLETIN

If you were in Church the past few Sundays, you probably noticed some changes to the bulletin. Included in the new format is a Welcome Card for members and visitors. We would like to have all of our members/attendees fill out the card with their name and IF your address, phone, or e-mail has changed, we would like you to include that information as well. This will help us keep our records updated. The backside of this card is for Prayer Requests. Fill out the card, tear it off, and put it in the small basket on the back table.
