In April, Stuart R. Bell, then dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas, was selected as LSU’s new executive vice chancellor and provost. Bell, originally from Abilene, Texas, holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering, all from Texas A&M University. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education, having held positions at the University of Alabama and the University of Kansas.

How have your stops at Alabama and Kansas prepared you for this position?I’ve been in higher education for more than 25 years. I’m not saying I’ve seen it all, because every day brings a different blend of challenges, but certainly that time has included budget challenges and times of devel-oping strategic plans, growing research programs, growing academic programs, and working with the legislature and governors—I’ve had a lot of experience in doing those things.

I think we have a great future at LSU. Yes, we have budget challenges and these will be front and center, top priorities to address. But we cannot allow that to consume our energy of progress; what-ever our role at the university, we must focus in a positive way there. If you move above those chal-lenges, the opportunities at LSU are huge. If you look at the base of what makes Louisiana successful, LSU is right at the apex. It is our capability of discovery and of providing a world-class education for the people of Louisiana that will make the difference for this state. Young people coming to campus, preparing for roles in our society, for careers where they can make a difference in the state and in their communities. LSU plays such a critical role in the success of Louisiana.

I’ve also spent a lot of time working with alumni and donors [at the University of Kansas]. Probably 10 or 20 years ago, we would talk about the support of our alumni and foundations as being the icing on the cake. The reality today is that the support is the cake, a main ingredient. This support is not just something nice to have; it’s the buildings that we educate our students in, the scholarships and profes-sorships to support students and faculty, all critical to how we’re going to move forward as a national flagship university. LSU is at that point. We have great, loyal donors, and we must continue building on our success, on that solid base. I’ve also had a good bit of experience working with the legislature, both at the federal and local levels in Kansas and Alabama, and I think that experience will be useful as I move into this new position.

What opportunities do you see at LSU?There are many opportunities for us at LSU. Building on the already broad and successful research mission and productivity of the programs at LSU is a great opportunity that we have now. And, we are growing enrollment; the growth of students coming into LSU is very encouraging and certainly important for what our mission is as an institution. If you were at an institution that was shrinking in enrollment, coupled with state budget decreases, you could have a stifling challenge financially. With our academic programs, we have so many strong and well known academic programs at LSU; I think there’s real opportunity to talk more about those. The South does not brag on itself very often, so we have to do a better job of telling the rest of the world about the great things that are going on at LSU.

What do you see as some of the biggest challenges you are going to face? With almost every opportunity, there are challenges. Whether you talk about the undergraduate student body and the programs we deliver, the gradu-ate and research programs that we deliver … there are challenges associated with every one of those. Certainly from a budgetary standpoint, we have challenges, but those are also opportunities to communicate the impact that LSU has on the state and that’s huge. If you look at what we do for the state and are really able to capture that impact and communicate it effectively, it will help and pay dividends in the future. Those challenges and opportuni-ties really go hand in hand. www.lsu.edu/academicaffairs

Dear Friends,

Looking back on the LSU Foundation’s 2011-12 fiscal year and the 2012 calendar year, it is clear that we are past the wrap-up phase of the Forever LSU campaign and have turned our attention to how we as an organization can plan for the future in a way that will best serve LSU. You are likely aware of the continuing budgetary challenges at LSU and of efforts to ensure that the LSU System functions as efficiently and effectively as possible. Even amidst extensive change, our mission remains constant. In January, we began the process of putting together a strategic plan. A team of management personnel, development officers and campus colleagues partnered with SSA Consultants, a renowned local organizational development and management consulting firm. SSA generously provided their services to us gratis, and they continue to guide the implementation of a four-year plan that the LSU Foundation Board of Directors approved in May. We have identified four strategic priorities: invest in people, redesign organization and operations, strengthen cross-campus collaboration, and execute large-scale fundraising efforts. Fulfilling these priorities will, we believe, enable us to double the amount of total annual fundraising by 2016 and also significantly increase the endowment. Our charge to ourselves is ambitious. Such ambition is precisely what LSU needs from us.

Sincerely,

G. Lee Griffin (MS Business, 1961)President and CEO, LSU Foundation

In early November, Yvette Marsh joined

the LSU Foundation as director of talent

management. The addition of this position

is a key initiative of the LSU Foundation’s

four-year strategic plan, and Marsh will serve

an essential role on the management team.

She reports directly to the president and CEO,

providing talent-related internal consulting

and day-to-day direction and leadership

related to HR. Yvette will develop programs

that drive Foundation performance, including

leadership and management development,

performance management and measurement,

hiring, compensation, retention, and succession planning. Marsh was previously director of

training and development and IT at LSU. She has 22 years of experience in the training and

development field, having served as a senior consultant with SSA Consultants, LLC; manager

of training and development for LSU; and corporate training officer and retail delivery trainer

for Hibernia National Bank, now Capital One Bank. Yvette holds two degrees from LSU: a

Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Master of Science in information systems

and decision sciences. She is currently working on a doctoral degree in human resource and

leadership development.

Fairleigh Cook Jackson, new associate director of

development for the LSU Museum of Art, was recently

named to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report’s

prestigious Forty Under 40. Each year, The Business Report

selects 40 young, rising stars in Baton Rouge and recognizes

them for their contributions to the community and their

professional achievements. To read the Business Report’s

Dear LSU Foundation Members and Friends,

As my term as chairperson concludes, I am grateful for the dedication of our board and our employees. The last two years have brought exciting change and the opportunity to think critically about how we, LSU’s largest source of private support, can best align our efforts with the goals of our campuses. We cut the ribbon on the Business Education Complex and are embarking on a $100 million public-private partnership to create a state-of-the-art LSU engineering complex. Such projects exemplify the greater impact we can have when we move beyond traditional fundraising to leverage private dollars with public support, corporate initiatives, individuals’ interests, and so on. Doing so is requisite to long-term financial stability for LSU, which is directly tied to our campuses’ overall success—and that is surely the most important role we can all have as Tigers. Our board has expanded in both size and breadth of expertise. The members’ personal and professional accomplishments are many, and they are all around stellar representatives of the Foundation. It has been a pleasure to work with this forward-thinking, devoted group. In October, the Board asked Lee Griffin to continue on as president and CEO through 2014. We all look forward to having Lee shepherd the first few years of the Foundation’s strategic plan; I know we will have many related successes to share with you in the months and years ahead.

With gratitude for your support,
