1 L&D Practitioners Network Thursday 11 September 2014 Measuring effectiveness and impacts of L&D interventions Our September meeting was kindly hosted by Mines Advisory Group (MAG) in their offices in Manchester – a suggestion from colleagues at Retrak and MAG to host an event “up North” which has proven to be a great initiative to be repeated! We were warmly welcomed by MAG CEO, Nick Roseveare, and enjoyed a presentation over lunch on their demining action. The key learnings and reflections from our discussions are captured in a blog from Em Lacroix available on the People In Aid website: http://www.peopleinaid.org/news/579.aspx Key slides from Paula Haddock from Intrac’s presentation are available to download from the L&D Network Resources page. Slide 8 in particular offers a good summary of where good practice starts: http://www.peopleinaid.org/resources/learninganddevelopment Additional resources and links that may be of interest from this meeting: Retrak: http://www.retrak.org/ MAG: http://www.maginternational.org/ Intrac: http://www.intrac.org/ Regarding the topic of our meeting, please do check INTRAC’s papers on M&E: http://www.intrac.org/pages/en/monitoringevaluationofcapacitybuildingimpact assessment.html Learning & Skills Conference: http://www.learningandskillsevents.com/conference Donald Clark: http://www.planblearning.com/

Annexes    • Sharing  training  opportunities  between  members

As  members  of  the  L&D  network  regularly  have  spare  places  on  training  courses  they  organise,  we  have  agreed  that  offers  to  join  these  courses  would  be  sent  to  Em  at  People  In  Aid  to  share  them  with  the  group.    • Future  themes    As  always  the  meeting  themes  are  member-‐led  and  any  suggestions  for  speakers  or  volunteers  to  present  to  the  group  are  very  welcome.  So  we  are  looking  forward  to  hearing  from  you  J.    From  your  most  recent  feedback,  here  are  the  themes  you  proposed  for  future  meetings:

• Psychometrics.  • Communities  of  Practice:  How  do  we  establish  them  and  most  of  all  maintain  them?  Connecting

and  creative  platforms  for  allowing  staff  to  connect.  • Understand  and  measure  the  impact  of  training  and  learning  (on  individuals  and  on  organisations)

and  demonstrate  effectiveness  (tools,  etc.).  • How  to  foster  social  learning  especially  with  a  geographically  dispersed  staff.  • Neuroscience.  • Experiential  learning  and  online  learning,  e.g.  developing  simulations.    • Organisational  resilience.  • Internal  coaching  and  mentoring  programmes  within  INGOs.  • Change  management  and  changing  behaviour.  • Opportunities  for  collaboration:  are  there  topics  agencies  can  work  on  together?

If  you  are  interested  in  sharing/presenting  on  any  of  these  (or  others),  please  let  us  know!    We  also  would  like  to  see  more  resources  being  shared,  and  more  case  studies  and  problem-‐solving  discussions  (i.e.  L&D  Surgery):  please  do  email  Em  with  your  suggestions  and  any  issues  you  would  like  to  share  with  the  community  so  this  can  be  used  to  inform  the  agenda  and/or  be  added  to  the  Market  Place.
