National ]President's Notes Trip to Grand American Interest is such that i t i s almost certain that there will be a n organised group visit to the Grand American next year. In the next edition of the CTSN there will be a n applica- tion form to be completed so a s firm numbers can be estab- lished and this, in turn, will afford us the best possible rates for all components for the trip. I must emphasise that bookings will only be available for a short period of time and subsequent bookings will only be in lieu of cancellations, which would only be minimal, if any.

Trip to the 1996 New Zealand Nationals A similar application will also be included for those members wishing to visit Christchurch for the 1996 New Zealand Nationals. The same conditions also apply re booking.

New Zealand: The cheapest way The Victorian Clay Target Association is conducting a rafne with three equal prizes of a trip for two to the Land of the Long White Cloud. Tickets can be had by contacting Ian Hill on phone (03) 9887 4597.

C.T.S.N. Subscription I was recently asked if it was possible to receive a copy of the C.T.S.N. without being a member of rhc A.C.T.A. The simple answer is yes. An individual, a club, in fact, anyone, can subscribe to the C.T.S.N. for a n annual fee of $25. Clubs are encouraged to take out a subscription and leave the copies a t their clubrooms for all visitors to look through.

School Student Clay Target Championships The four Victorian Zones have just completed their Zone School Student shoots and i t is very encouraging that some 600+ students have taken part in this event this year. By the time this magazine is printed the finals will have been conducted a t Bendigo, and our State Champions will have been decided. The events are divided into sections for Overall, Best Senior and Junior Girls and Boys, and for the Champion Team. Thanks must go to Winchester (Aust.), and their Victorian Area Sales Manager, Mr. Rod Laidlaw, for their contribu- tion to the success of these championships. Would not i t be wonderful if we had such an event in every State?

World Down-The-Line Championship The 1997 World Down-The-Line Championship has been allocated to New South Wales, and the current recommen- dation is that we combine this event with our 1997 T r a ~ Nationals in an amcndcd format so a s LO nfford all the opportunity ufcumpeting in this prestigious event. Details will be published as soon as decisions are nlarle on venue, etc.

1995 N.S.W. State Skeet Carnival This year's Carnival moved north to Tamworth, where we were blessed with warm, sunny weather and a great weekend of shooting. The grounds were immaculate as usual, and although with only 68 shooters present, we had less than expected, those who attended appeared to have a wonderful time. I t was pleasing to see a cnrload of shooters from Victoria, as well as our Queensland competitors. Their attendance boosts the carnival numbers, but I must ask once again, where are the N.S.W. Skeet Shooters?? If they are out there somewhere, why don't they support their own carni- val?? This Carnival is conducted for you by the State Asso- ciation annually, yet enthusiasm on the part of Skeet Shooters seems very limited. 1995 is the first year of N.S.W.'s new Carnival Strategy, which involves offering medals as prizes for a basic nomi- nation fee, and optional graded cash prizes for those who wish to enter. The general feeling from shooters seemed very positive, with i t being well received by all grades and levels of shooters. One really has to say i t though, i t was Nasseem Maloufs weekend! He won both the 100 target events, a s well a s the State Team High Gun and the Overall High Gun. Well done, Nasseem.

Barton were soon sorted out a s the AA Grade winners

11 Now available in the following types: II

George Barton shot well to take out the Juniors, while Alf Najar was successful in the Veterans. Margaret Denton from Charlieville in Queensland was successful in Womens after a shoot-off with another keen woman skeet shooter, Robyn Faher. The State Skeet Championship on the Sunday ended with a shoot-off between Nasseem Malouf and Paul Kouroupis. Junior shooter, Michael Faber, won B Grade from Arthur Vine and Frank Hedley. George Barton, Margaret Denton and Alf Najar all won their sections again. The State Team was selected a s follows: Nasseem Malouf, Reg Clarke, Dan Lagden, Jim Wilberforce, Clive Barton, Scott Wright, George Barton, Dave Michie, Tony Valle- longa, Ken Jones, Paul Kouroupis, G a r y McDonald, David Sampson, Christian Naudin and Bill Clark. After the Teams event and sorting out of who could attend the Nationals in Townsville, the Shoulder to Shoulder Team was announced as Nasseem Malouf, George Barton, Dan Lagden, Scott Wright and Tony Vallelonga, with Ken Jones the reserve. Congratulations to you all, especially George Barton, while still a junior, being selected in the Open Team. I t was also really encouraging to have a State Junior Team again this year. George Barton, Phillip Jackson, Michael Faber, &is Jones, Kevin Turner and Craig Turner com- bined to become the State Junior Team, with the Shoulder to Shoulder Team comprising of Michael Faber, Phillip Jackson and &is Jones. I understand that this was 13- year-old Phillip Jackson's first big shoot - certainly someone to keep a n eye on in the future. Good luck to both our Teams a t the Skeet Nationals in Townsville, and by the time this i s read, we will all know the results of the Team Competition. Overall Hlgh Gun, a s previously mennoned, was won by Nasseem .Malout', Womens High Gun by Margaret Denton, Junror Hlah Gun bv Gcorec Barton. and Veterans Hrah - - Gun by ~ j t ~ a j a r . - The ever-popular Teams event drew a n interested follow- ing again, with the 2 Member Team being won by Nasseem Malouf and Dan Lagden, the 5 person Mixed Team by Reg Clarke, Scott Wright, Christian Naudin, Nasseem Malouf and Dan Lagden. The 5 Member Club Team was again won by Wakehurst Gun Club, which appears to be our strongest Skeet Club.

Volunteer Involvement Program

Money problems - not for Margaret River Hockey Club If you have ever bad to suffer the trauma of having to flog chocolates, raffles or organise fund-raising functions either to raise money for a team or club, then read on. Volunteers and fund-raising are the two main ingredients that keep many spurt and recreation organisations on the rails, and without them many clubs would and have folded. In its endeavours to alleviate the endless burden of hndraising drives, one enterprising club decided to pool their resources and eo into business. - Last vear the Marearet River Hockev Club in Western Aus- "~~ ~ ~ - ~ ~ ~~~- ~~~-~~~ ~-~~~

tralia fbrmcd a kind of syndicatc and utilising thc many talents and trades of their committee members and people involved in the club, leased and completely renovated a kiosk a t the Jewel Caves. Formerly the Jewel River Kiosk, the structure has had a com~lete face-lift and a slieht name chanee - Cafe Jewel. Thc extensive renovations were carried out by tradesmen and handymen and rvomcn within the club, with an electri- cian the only paid wurkcr amongst the goup . Club President, Mark Harrison believes the club is fortu- nate in having such an enterprising bunch of people willing to give their time freely to make the venture work. "We're really lucky with the.people involved in the club", he said. "They're a really switched on group and having a Club Sec- retary who's an srchitcct as well as Chris Wilson is a bonus - h e was really the driving force hehind the project." "We also have an accountant in Terry Wtse, our Treasurer, so he makes sure cverything's runnlng smoothly for us." While the cafe is currently mainly servicing the tourists visiting the nearby Jewel Caves, Harrison believes they are gradually winning the locals across and a major re-develop- ment plain in the pipeline, courtesy of the Augusta Mar- garet River Tourist Bureau, will only mean good things for the cafe. "The tourist bureau is plann~ng a huge re-development of the whole area and basically part ufthcir plan rs to havc people actually go through the kiosk to get to the caves", Harrison said:

.

With adventure cavine set to take off in Australia. the .. Bureau is planning to establish one of the caves as an adventure cave, which w~ll no doubt attract cave imthusi- asts from not only Australia, but all over the world. This will only auger well for the business which Harrison says is not thriving at the moment, ns all profits raised are going towards repaying the $15,000 intercst free Shirc Counc~l loan the club took out. But, with a five year lease and plans of increasing advertis- ing and special events such a s introducing musical groups and the like to the cafe, Harrison believes that down the track, the club will reap the rewards of a lot of hard work. "It hasn't been plain sailing by any means so far, but we are determined to make i t and I believe we will", Harrison said. The Jewcl Cafe is located about five kilometres north of Augusta on Caves Road and is opcn for Devonshire teas and light lunches. It also sells souvenirs and is open for special functions. So drop in and help a local sporting club in its new venture - sure beats the hell out of losing raffle tickets and eating that awful chocolate ... well almost ... better still take your chocolates and raffle tickets with you.

I talked Dad into taking me to watch a Coma Clay Target shoot, then I pestered the President of the Cowra Gun Club Noel Dwight to let me join the club. In conclusion: I am very proud to be involved in the N.S.W. Junior Development Coaching Program.

Dear Editor, I.S.U. trap, double trap and ISU skeet As most athletes, who are vylng for a posluon in the 1996 Atlanta Olymp~c Games, ha \e now completed thew 1995 international seakons in World Cups, World Champ,. onships etc, we now should realisejust how good these shooters are compared to all other sports that will be rep- resenting Australia in 1996. I believe our I.S.U. Trap and 1)oublc Trap shooters are second only to the swimmers in world class competition, not a bad etrurt by a very dedicated team ofyoung men who have given a lot of their own time and money to reach the top of their chosen sport, and to be a constant threat a t every competition they compete in throughout the world.

Steven Haberman: World Double trap Champion ' Michael Diamond: Ranked No. 2 in the world in I.S.U. Trap, but 1995 would see Michael break more targets than any other shooter throughout the world.

Russell Mark: Ranked No. 5 in the world in I.S.U. Trap and No. 8 in Double Trap (1994 World Double Trap Cham- pion). Others vying for a posnton to Atlanta arc also very strong and dedicated, and have also knven a lot of their valuablc

time and money in their efforts to achieve a life's ambition to represent their country a t an Olympic Games.

Deserie Huddleston (Double Trap) Fillipo Petriella (I.S.U. Trap) Craig Meuleman and David Cunningham (I.S.U. Skeet)

MI these shooters have shot very uonaistently throughout the years 199411995 and with l in~shes within rhe top sixteen in world class competition.

Best of luck to you all.

Yours faithfully Robbie Smith

Dear Editor, Firstly a question to the State Handicapper or Rules Com- mittee. At I'lnley Gun Club they have u n t ~ l iecrn~ly ran a Slnglc Barrel ttandicap, wlth the wlnncr bang pcnalised 1 metre Am I nalit in saylng that thir 1s a novelty event end no penalty applies, or wrong, and a penalty applies for a handicap win, he i t Single or Double Barrel. Secondly, with the new Pointscore system (yes I did vote for it), I may have found a small problem which would only happen when you have a high gun shoot off. With Points scored the new way with 1 for first barrel, 2 for second barrel, the total score could become confusing if 2 or 3 rounds for the high gun were shot. I had thought that going back to the old 3-2-0 for a high gun shoot off would be easier for referees and scorers to total up.

Yours faithfully Ron Cugley

The gun that has done and is doing more for shooters in 26 years, since I introduced them in commercial quantities into West Australia, than other guns that have been available over very long periods. With the most modern and up-to-date technology built into them, it is designed to gve you more value for far longer for the dollars you spend when you buy a Perazzi - no doubt about that. It's a long-term investment for your enjoyment so why not join the very wise shooters who knew best to select Perazzi and when you also are ready to invest in a top gun, you immediately think to yourself "Perazzi from Yozzi" the most favoured name and Perazzi centre in Australia since 1972. The end of Julv had been verv. verv wet and the first two days of ~ u g u s i no better, hut'l'hurLday the 3rd started cold nnd cluar ibr this event at the Fmnkston-Australian Cln) Target Club; even with all t h ~ s watel. the grounds were a credit to the Club. With nomination and the other formalities out of the way, the first shot was fired a t 10.30. Having four traps in use and a very pleasant surplus of adult workers, both parents and teachers. The sighter and the first 10 targets had been shot at, by all the 113 competitors, by 11.40am and not a possible on the board, but plenty of 9's. After a short break for the lunch the second half commenced, with the only 10 of the day coming from the second squad, added to the 9 in the first aund, 14-year-old Aaron White had won the Overall, in fine style; he had missed the first target, and to quote the referee, "he smoked the rest". Aaron used a Bentley pump, which has a trap stock and Winchester 1200's his favourite shells. This was a remark- able achievement for this Wonthaggi Secondary College student, who shoots with a positive and confident attitude, which is not in line with his tender years. The, dlicihl dpenlng of the nrn Ijnir~lsddlc Clay I'argrt Clul, Ball Trap 1.ayuut coinc~ded with the Wlllis Cro\\,~.ott Rlrniorial Shoot on Saturday, 5th August.

With the hall trap considered such a challenge to many shooters, and because Willis Growcott grabbed many chal- lenges with both hands, members believed i t was appropri- ate to name the ball trap event in memory of the club's past member.

Will~s Growcott, who was a keen member for more than 20 years, gained much pleasure from the sport of clay target shooting and made many friendships.

At one stage or another, the Growcott family have been keen shooters a t the club and i t was great to see his family present for the opening of the new facility.

In attendance for the oficial opening included Mr. Glenn Woodhatch and wife (both shooters), who made no hesita- tion in accepting Lhe Bairnsdale Clay Target Club's invita- tion to officially help launch the new ball trap layout. Also in attendance was Mr. Ron Schrader, ex-Mayor and Coun- cillor for the City of Bairnsdale. At the conclusion of events, Willis Growcott's family pre- sented the trophy to the winner, Joe Attard from Morwell Gun Club, score 47/50.

Glen Growcott presented trophies and, on behalf of his family, thanked the club for initiating the move to name the ball trap in memory of Willis Growcott.

A lot of hard work went into the success of the shoot day with Bruce Hall (off~ce), Mrs. A. Hall and Mrs. E. Roberts providing a huge spread in the canteen.

Vale Mal Dengate

The Tamworth Clay Target Club recently lost one of its keenest members with the very untimely passing of Malcom Dengate.

Until illness struck some 12 months ago, Ma1 was a very keen and competent skeet and sporting clays shooter and was active in the club administration, including zone rep- resentation.

The President and members extend their deepest sympa- thy to Joanna and family.

Maryhorough 27th August This shoot will be the last shoot for Yvonne and Les in the kitchen as they have decided to have a break from the kitchen and shooting for a while and will be back in the near future. Thanks Yvonne and Les for what you have put into the kitchen - apart from the food, the improve- ments you have made in the kitchen. Thanks again, hope to see yoii back soon. Our own Chris Harrison has accepted the position of South-East Zone Coach. Keep up the good work Chris and congratulations on your appointment. When President Paul told me of his wins a t Brisbane he was a bit confused which he was first and second in so a t the shoot tried to put me straight, but he got more con- fused. This is the problem of winring too many events, so please turn to Brisbane 2-day shoot results and you get a clear picture. Our visitors for our shoot Glen Durre and Bill Stolberg of Gympie with Howard Sparke, Kaye and Rob Rehbein of Bundy, we also were host to Tom Brereton and Mark Coyne having his first shoot over the traps, both coming from Gundiah which is dawn the track a bit. Thanks for coming visitors. We also bad a squad of shoot- ers from the charity shoot, a t the end of July who came back for another shot. The results of the shoot as follows, with Paul Anderson taking A Grade 25t DB and 25t SB, and Peter Paguarino takingB Grade in the same events, with Chris Harrison A Grade winhning the 15 Pair DR and Howard Sparke taking C Grade 25t DB and 15 Pair DR with Rob Rehbein winningA Grade 25t DB PTS and A.G.H.G., Norm Dale B Grade 25t DB PTS and 15 Pair DR and B.G.H.G., while Harry Walker took off C Grade 25t DB PTS, 25t SB and C.G.H.G., but didn't shoot the jackpot. Better luck next time Harry. As I had to leave early to attend the 98th birthday for a young lady, I didn't find out who won the rame. Thanks Harry for bring home my winnings and result of shoot. Our next shoots - 1st October, Maryborough Master Games and Heritage One-Day Shoot, and next club shoot October 22nd DB, PI'S, SB, Cont. with Gympie 2-day October 7th-8th, and Bundy 2-day 28th-29th October, giving shooters a busy October.
