On Thursday 26 May, the year 10s went to Cairns showgrounds to the Cairns Careers Expo which was

organised by the Cairns Business Liaison Associaon. The purpose of the expo was to give us the

opportunity to look at career choices available for when we graduate from high school. There was a

large variety of stalls from trades to hospitality, the defence force, employment agencies and

universies such as CQU and James Cook University. They even had a number of stalls promong

volunteer work such as Surf Life Saving. It was great to go to the expo because we got a head start in

choosing what we would like to do as a career. Thank you to all the staff who accompanied us on this

experience, we all appreciated it very much.

On Friday 27 May a select number of high achievers from

years 7, 8 and 9 LOTE classes were given an opportunity to

a=end the 2016 Young Language Ambassadors conference:

‘Inspiring Others - The Languages of Leadership’ at James

Cook University in Cairns. Throughout the conference

students were tasked with creang intuive ways to

ensure language is valued and used as a tool to bring our

diverse and unique communies together as one.

With over 250 students in a=endance from different FNQ

schools, Dekotah Terewaamu (Year 7) was hand-picked to

speak in front of the student body for her ideas on why it is

so important to promote language educaon in our region.

She not only wrote a fantasc response but delivered it

succinctly and with confidence in front of students who

had many more years of schooling under their belts. Her

efforts were an outstanding example of the insight and

work that students at Innisfail State College demonstrate

on a daily basis. Well done to all those involved and keep

up the fantasc work!

2016 Young Language Conference Recently two year nine

geography classes visited the

Mungalli Creek Dairy as part of

a unit of study examining

agricultural pracces and their

impact on various biomes.

Students were taken on a tour

of the dairy and shown all of

the steps in the dairy

producon process. We also

had the opportunity to take

part in a cheese and yoghurt

tasng session which was enjoyed by all parcipants. Later the tour

guides organised a Q & A session, with students asking some very

thoughMul quesons about the operaon of the dairy farm.

Woolworths sponsors breakfast

Thanks to the generous donaon of eggs, bread and fruit by

Woolworths to the college each week, students are able to have a

nutrional breakfast before lessons on Thursdays. Pictured below are

some of our students enjoying a healthy start to their day.

Readers’ Cup Congratulaons to the Year 7 and 8 students who took part in the Readers’ Cup compeon

in Cairns! As ISC’s first entry into the compeon, the parcipants’ involvement can be

deemed a great success with the team finishing sixth in the compeon and winning three

novels to add to our school’s library.

Compeng against 19 other teams from schools from all over the Cairns region, the day

consisted of students answering a range of challenging comprehension quesons from six

novels. Students performed brilliantly under pressure, maintaining good spirits and having a

lot of fun. This was a great experience for these students and the college community can be

very proud of their achievement. Any students in Year 7 who are interested in enhancing

their love of reading are most welcome to take part in the program next year.

Mrs Garget and Mr Hoddle.

Ques"on: What do you get when you

mix three teachers, one student, make-

up, hairspray and nail polish?

Answer: A stunning Hayley Goggi.

Hayley, a Year 11 student, is currently

compleng a personal development/

self-esteem course with her case

manager. As part of this course, she

needed to undergo a glamour make-

over photo shoot. So enter Miss

Kaluza, make-up arst to the ‘stars’,

Miss Wayman, waving the hairdryer

like a conductors’ baton, and Miss

Oakroot, channelling her inner nail

technician for two hours of furious

transformaon work. Hayley, you look

beauful.

Innisfail State College in partnership with Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (ATODS) in Innisfail has begun a bike recondioning

program for our junior secondary students. By parcipang in the program students will develop both employability and well-being

skills. Students will inially re-condion one bike for themselves and then re-condion further bikes to offer someone less fortunate in

the community.

The college is always looking for more bikes to use in the program and would welcome any donaons from the community. Please

contact Mr Ma= Sharrock or Mr Ian Willme= if you would like to donate a bike.
