Latest trends
European fish traders attended the Brussels Seafood Expo this
month, the major industry event of the year. The dominant consumer trend at present is growing demand for more expensive convenience seafood products. In the shorter term, demand is
good on the European market and landings are slow.
GROUNDFISH
Polish domestic catches of cod were moderate in May 2019, but demand has been weak and prices are down. In Germany, imports
of Alaska pollock during the first two months of 2019 reached 32 000 tonnes, 6 000 tonnes more than in the same period last
year despite higher prices. However, sales of frozen Alaska pollack fillets have dropped in 2019 due to consumer resistance to the 19 percent price increase at retail.

Haddock was has been plentiful on the Swedish market, and prices have fallen fell by almost 30
percent, a trend that is typical for this time of year.a normal feature in the time of the year.
Cultured turbot is in good supplysupply is good, while although demand is relatively slow at the
momenpresent and, as a result, prices are trending downwards.
Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific is reported to be good and raw material inventories at Thai canneries are close to full
capacity. With the increase in supplies and backlog from the previous month, Bangkok
Port is congested with several carriers waiting at anchorage. Skipjack price prices have fallen sharply.
Catch rates in the Indian Ocean have slowed
to slow-to-moderate. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy
while there has been a decrease in transhipment activities. Despite the slowdown in catches, skipjack and yellowfin prices have fallen in line with the global trend.

Fishing in the Eastern Pacific has improved further to moderate-to-good and carriers
continue to arrive from the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. Raw material inventories at local canneries are now
moderate. Due to the better supply situation and the downward price trend in Bangkok,
skipjack and yellowfin prices have decreased and further declines are likely in the coming weeks. Demand is weak in the main market
for Ecuadorian tuna, the EU28, and traders are anticipating a further decline in raw
material prices.
Catch rates in the Atlantic Ocean remain slow-
to-moderate and local canneries are low on raw material. Despite this, skipjack prices
have decreased slightly while yellowfin prices remain stable.
Prices on the European market for skipjack have fallen while yellowfin prices are stable.
The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins has increased slightly.
Polish herring catches have been good and prices have declined despite firm demand. Sprat catches in Poland are also high, but demand is stronger than supply at present and prices are rising.
We are currently in the low season for octopus
and supply of raw material is very limited, keeping prices at high levels.
Very little demand for cuttlefish is reported in Europe, while Chinese demand is moderate.
Squid supply is somewhat better than last year, and prices are trending downwards.

Shrimp markets remain subdued although there have been some sporadic spurts driven by improved interest from China.
Argentine shrimp catches were strong last month and inventories remain high
despite a decline in catches in the Northern part of the country. Asian
demand is slow, which is pushing prices downward, but the Chinese market is expected to pick up soon. This boost to
demand, together with a delay in the new fishing season in the South, should
translate into higher prices. Buyers in European countries should also start their summer purchases soon.
In Indonesia, farmers are targeting an early harvest before the start of the long holiday running
from the end of May to early June. In mid-June, farmers are planning to restock the ponds for the harvest at the end of August.
European crab and lobster landings are typically much lower at this time of year. The current
high level of crab prices compared with last year reflects low stocks and strong demand.
Global demand for lobster is good worldwide for all types of products. Demand in the USA is still
very high. Strong demand is also reported for rock lobster from Yemen, and poor landings
there are driving up prices.
The start of the Canadian lobster season, which generally begins in the first few days of May,
was delayed this year due to windy conditions. Weather conditions have since improved, however, and catches have been good with shore prices still unstable.
Prices for whole lobster are expected to be more or less equal to last year or just a little bit higher. Tail prices, however, are at record highs because of severely limited availability of both
Canadian/American lobster tails and rock lobster tails. American lobster meat prices are reportedly stable, with the exception of prices for minced meat, which have been increasing
rapidly due to soaring demand.

The French market is currently dominated by rope mussels from Ireland and Spain with some Normandie Bouchot also available. Dutch bottom mussels are less plentiful in France at this
time of year. For oysters, supply will dry up as summer approaches.
Prices for farmed Atlantic salmon dropped steeply in late April and early May, with Norwegian
export prices down some 26 percent year-on-year and down around 19 percent from pre-Easter prices. The Fish Pool Index stood at NOK 59.62 per kg for fresh whole fish as of week
19, marking a significant decline from year-high level of NOK 80.22 per kg reached in the same week of 2018. The primary cause of the decline
is a sharp increase in harvesting activity just before Easter, as European salmon farmers sought to take advantage of the high price level
and subsequently flooded the market with fish. Smaller sizes are particularly plentiful, and the
smallest size salmon are selling for around half the price of the largest sizes.
In April, the average price level was on par with the same month last year, while increased
supply gave a substantial boost to Norwegian export sales. According to the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), 86 000 tonnes was exported during the month, worth NOK 6.2 billion – a new record. Despite trade tensions and fears over
slowing economic growth, demand for salmon is still strong and the krone has stayed relatively weak versus major currencies. The NSC reports domestic market growth in Norway’s leading
export destination, Poland, supplementing demand coming from the large Polish industry dedicated to salmon processing and re-export. In the UK, Scottish salmon prices have fallen in line with their Norwegian counterparts, down to around GBP 6.40 per kg in week 20 after a
steep decline in the weeks after Easter. This level represents a decline of some 20 percent compared with the same week last year.
Total global production of farmed Atlantic salmon is estimated to have increased by 3.5 percent in Q1 2019 and higher biomasses indicate significant growth potential for the remainder of the
year. In fact, the majority of the 5-6 percent increase in supply forecast for 2019 is expected to hit the market in the second half of the year. This is likely to push prices down throughout
the 3rd quarter and keep them down until end-of-year demand kicks in. Current forward prices at Fish Pool are NOK 62 per kg for May, and have fallen to 56.83 and 57.17 per kg for Q3 and Q4 respectively. Further escalation of trade conflicts, either between the USA and China or
between the USA and the EU28, will potentially have significant negative impacts for the economic outlook in general and for salmon trade specifically.

Export prices for fresh whole Norwegian trout were at NOK 60.52 in week 18, down 13 percent compared a month prior and down 7 percent compared with the same week in 2018. Trout
biomasses were some 25 percent higher year-on-year as of the end of March and supply can be expected to increase significantly this year. At the same time, demand remains strong, with
increasing sales of value-added products such as fillets and smoked trout. In April, according to the NSC’s latest figures, Norway exported 3 800 tonnes of trout worth NOK 275 million, increases of 4 and 14 percent respectively. In the first 4 months of the year, 14 800 tonnes
(+9 percent) have been exported with a total value of NOK 165 million (+19 percent).
Total supply of bass and bream to
European markets continues to grow, keeping prices firmly down at a time when they should be approaching their peak.
Prices for medium-sized Greek-origin bass on the Italian market are 18 percent lower
in May compared with the same month in 2018, while the decline for bream is 4 percent. Exports from both Greece and
Turkey increased significantly year-on-year in early 2019, more than
compensating for a decline in volumes from other origins. Oversupply will continue to inflict damage on producers’ bottom lines and the overall outlook remains bleak.
While Greek producers have struggled to compete with deeply discounted Turkish fish, the currency depreciation that has enabled Turkey’s competitive advantage is part of wider
economic problems that is increasingly affecting the financial health of Turkish aquaculture companies as well as demand in the Turkish domestic market.
