F or the third year in a row, Hamptons International in Hove was proud tosponsor Brighton’s Artists’ Open Houses Festival. The free event, whichtook place throughout every weekend in May, was a celebration of local

contemporary and traditional artists and makers, who opened their homes tothe general public to view and purchase their artwork and crafts.

Over 1,000 participants took part this year, of all ages and stages in theirartistic career and from all parts of the city. Jewellery, ceramics and textilesas well as painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography were all ondisplay, giving visitors the chance to see the private studios and workspaceof the creative community in Brighton, where they were also able to purchasetheir wares. For visitors who were feeling particularly creative and inspired bythe event, a number of artists organised workshops and demonstrations attheir home for visitors to learn the expertise associated with practices thatincluded sculpture, screen printing, drawing and stencil art, as well aschildren’s crafts and workshops for young ones.

Of the 200 artists’ venues that were located on the 13 Open House Trails,Hamptons offered to place a Hamptons board outside the first 25participating venues to come forward, in order to draw passersby into thehome to view their artwork. Some of the most exciting work from this year’sopen house artists included the curated open submission exhibition:Translations, in the extraordinary drawing room, upstairs at The RegencyTown House at Brunswick Square.

The festival saw a fantastic turnout across all four weekends, with peopletravelling far and wide to visit the diverse and vibrant artistic community ofBrighton and Hove.

Hamptons’ lettings manager for Hove, Paul Hawes, commented on theevent: “We are delighted to have sponsored Brighton Artists’ Open HousesFestival in what has proved to be a fantastic showcase of the artistic talentwithin our wider community. The private homes of local artists are otherwisehidden to the public, and we are proud to have been part of a festival whichcelebrates Brighton’s creative roots.”

For the first time in its 30 year plus history, the AOH Young Artists Projectwas piloted in six venues, where young artists both exhibited their work anddeveloped useful learning skills for the future. The project aims to assistthose who face barriers which prevent them from taking their professionalwork forward. One of the artists who took part has since secured employmentat Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft where she will be organising workshopsand exhibiting her artwork. With future plans to assist graduates at BrightonUniversity, it is hoped that the next festival will open doors for more emergingyoung talent in the city.

T he trend away from formal entertaining has accelerated in all but thehighest echelons of society. Yet most Victorian homes were built to astyle that demands that we eat away from the utilitarian kitchen.

So what happens now? Tremendous advances in kitchen design means thatwe are as proud today of our kitchens as our great-grandparents were of theirdining rooms. A smart kitchen is astyle statement. Today’s kitchen is the“heart of the home” where style andcomfort combine to make the mostwelcoming room in the house. Wherebetter to entertain our friends?

Our buyers increasingly request alarge kitchen for this reason, yet fewdemand a formal dining room. RSJ(Reinforced Steel Joist) manufacturersmust be doing a roaring trade as manydining rooms that are adjacent to kitchens get knocked through to make alarge open kitchen/dining area – ideally with a TV seating area as well if space permits.

Where the dining room is adjacent to the sitting room, it is also quiteimpressive from a buyer’s perspective to see one large sitting room in itsplace for wow factor. However, a word of caution when this relates to a familyhome where the sitting room is already a reasonable size. It may be that theold dining room could be put to better use as a teenage TV room/den orhomework room, especially as children are leaving home later in life.

Also, with increasing numbers of people working from home, a dining roomcan represent valuable office space, which is lost if knocked through.

T his year, Leaders are linking theirpopular drawing competition withraising money for Macmillan

When Brighton Museum’s SarahPosey expertly caught a roastpotato that was eager to

escape my plate at a rather swishdinner party, and was kind enough toplace it back on my plateinconspicuously, I knew that we wouldget on just fine. I was delightedtherefore when our meeting led to atour of North Gate House on the Pavilion Estate.

North Gate House is a building thatmost Brightonians would know if theysaw it, but few can recall it inconversation when asked what issituated in its tucked-away positionbetween the Pavilion’s North Gate andBrighton Museum.

The double-fronted building consistsof five-storeys, including basement androof rooms, and began as 8 Marlborough Row as part of a terraceof nine houses. The terrace was builtfrom 1784-1802 but was short-lived.Most of it was demolished in 1820/21 after it was purchasedby agents of the Prince Regent. The building was onceknown as the Lord Chamberlain’s House and Guard House,and was used by Lord and Lady Hertford. It received anIndian makeover in 1832, presumably at the same time thatthe North Gate itself was constructed in a similar style.

The interior has been radically transformed over the years and now serves asa visitor centre for schools and offices. Many old features remain but one doeshave to look closely to find them. Wooden shutters and old staircases survivewhich is remarkable given their age. The floors are wonky but that is always tobe expected. A massive range dominates thebasement which no doubt originally served as a kitchen. On the ground floor, the two front rooms serve as a seminar area andschool canteen.

One great room is a first floor office whichoverlooks the North Gate and Pavilion groundsgenerally. It is from here that the RoyalPavilion & Museums Foundation is run. Havinggone from 900 to 5,000 members in fiveyears, it is something of a local success story. Much of what goes on throughoutthe Pavilion Estate would not be possible without it.

Just as North Gate House escapes the attention of those walking by, it hasalso escaped the attention of many local historians. Asummary of the year so far that will probably make you jealous: I havebeen to Cuba, Turkey (twice), the Seychelles and Dubai. Now for the not-jealousy making stuff; I have had repairs done on my house, which turned

out to be fairly extensive, not to mention expensive...I have also had to buy new patio furniture as the old stuff had rotted so much

that it had become dangerous to sit on and I’ve purchased a new washingmachine for one of my rental flats. Interestingly, over my years as a landlady,

I’ve had to buy more new boilers (4)than I have washing machines (2),which should tell us something, otherthan the fact that I would have beenmuch better off had the figures beenthe other way round.

Needless to say, all this spendinghas not done much for my bankbalance and with the painting of theexterior of my house and my 50thbirthday looming I need to start savingrather than splurging.

While I was relaxing over a terribly nice cocktail in the Seychelles last month,The Small Daughter – ever a fount of financial wisdom beyond her years –suggested rather tactfully that I should perhaps stay at home in Brighton for thesummer and save some money. To make the idea more palatable, The SmallDaughter code-named what is effectively my incarceration, as a ‘Holiday atHome’, or HAH for short. HAH it might be, but I do not find it very funny, as Iknow that I’d spend most of my HAH removing the hairs of foreign students fromthe shower trap and plugging my ears while they scream nocturnal Skypeconversations to their parents in Italy. See? NOT FUNNY!

On a more positive note, at least I’d have a final Brighton summer with myolder children, who are planning to move out this year and I can reinstate mynoisy BBQs and parties to annoy the neighbours. I would also be here to waterthe tomatoes for the first time in years. Besides, I won’t miss the check-in deskqueues at Gatwick, nor the excruciating, hungover red-eyed flights back fromvarious destinations. Better still, I’ve been invited to Whitstable, mid-Wales andStoke-On-Trent, plus I have my eye on the sunny spare room of my friend Cwhich overlooks the duck pond in Storrington.

Mind you, it’s only three months until September when, no doubt, I’ll be let outon probation and have my eye on the distant, gleaming towers of NYC, plus along stint in my Turkish idyll. Until then, I shall have to be content sitting in theBrighton summer sun on my new patio furniture. It’s a hard life...
